Use vintage joysticks with your C64 emulator

If you have a vintage joystick that you used to use on your original C64 and would like to game with it on VICE or TheC64Mini, check this out! Not too long ago, I bought myself the D-SUB9 USB joystick adapter, from Retronic Design (based here, in Canada).

!

With this device, I can play my favorite C64 games on my PC (using VICE) or my TheC64Mini using my favorite joystick, the Wico TheBOSS.

I'm really glad it works so well. Some games I just can't play very well without using TheBOSS… keyboard keys and TheC64Joystick are just not good enough. The game, “Aliens The Video Game” is one of them. I just can't get by the first stage (the flying down to the planet surface) with using a keyboard on VICE; and I'm not much better with TheC64Joystick. So, again, it was a very satisfying moment for me this afternoon when I made it through that stage on the first try, with TheBOSS. In the words of George Costanza, “I'm back, BABY!”

I go into a bit further detail about it on my blog post here: https://www.my64.in.nf/doku.php?id=blog:2024-03-15

Text adventures for the beginner

Greetings, all! My first post on Lemmy! 😀

For anyone new to the C64 scene, or returning to their Commodore roots, there may come a time when you might want to give text adventure games a try. If you do, here are a couple recommendations that I've enjoyed more recently.

For the noobie, Castle Quest, by Ricky Derocher, is a short and simple text adventure game, perfect for the beginner. The commands used by the text parser are uncomplicated and puzzles are relatively straight-forward.

Link to the itch.io page: https://rickyderocher.itch.io/castle-quest-commodore-64.

Once you get the hang of it, an enjoyable (and not too complicated) graphic text adventure you may want to try out is, The Curse of Rabenstein, by Stefan Vogt. Stefan has a great way of telling a story that draws you right in. Link to the itch.io page: https://8bitgames.itch.io/rabenstein.

Game on, Adventurer!

New C64 game - free or pay what you want.

Your home base has been attacked by an evil alien empire. Your mission is to fly your space fighter through all five zones, fight away the alien interceptors and defeat their Empire. Locate the last boss and then shut it down by blasting at the gate. The aliens will be waiting to do battle against you and some alien interceptors will aim directly for your ship before firing lasers.

LOL! I dunno, but it's pretty cool that you're asking about it.

What's the rest of your setup look like?

  • Just to see how big or small our community is: Post your all time favorite C64 game.
  • Not many have heard of it probably, but: Newcomer.

It was developed by a Hungarian team, but as far as I know there is an English version. It's an RPG in which you move around like in Doom (but you can only turn 90 degrees). Due to the limitations of the C64, you can only see your enemies as splash art before the fight (which is character based), and it involves a lot of disk swapping (it came out on a whopping FIVE floppies!). But it's a huge game: countless characters, conversations, fights, items to run into, and you can proceed by talking to the right people, using the right items, mentioning the right topics (sometimes you can type in key words).

  • Dig Dug Revival - Check out this rather cool homage to Dig Dug for the Commodore 64!
  • There's some sprite and palette differences that I can see right off the bat, hit very cool.

    Here's the original.

One of my favorite games growing up. I remember dedicating a whole day to kill-screening the arcade versions of Dig Dug and Pac-Man back in college.

  • @allc64 @c64 I used to read #DigitalTalk in the late 90s when I discovered the Internet and the fact that there still was a #c64 scene. The X1541 cable I built to be able to read DT on my C64 was the first thing I ever soldered. One of the editors (Dejhura? Champ?) lived just a few blocks away from me in Hannover, but I was too shy to contact them. I should really start reading it again.
