As you may have already noticed, 3 new admins have been added. Welcome @[email protected] , @[email protected] , and @[email protected]! There are also many more people that are helping behind the scenes as well. They have many years of experience moderating various subreddits, and I believe that they can bring lemmy.ca to the next level.
We have been collaborating so that they will be taking over hosting this instance. When I initially volunteered to take over this instance early in 2022, I was thinking it would just be a hobby project, and I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. With the surge of new users in the past few weeks, and potentially a lot more to come soon, I decided that I don't have the time or energy required to dedicate to running this site, and it just so happened that they were looking for a new home too.
@[email protected] and I will stay on as an admin while we transition to a new server, just to make sure everything goes smoothly, but I plan on removing myself as an admin once everything is settled. I will try and stay active here as a user, because I believe that lemmy and the fediverse can become something great!
I have also suspended donations for the time being, but thank you to all that have already donated. All your current donations will be transferred to the new admins.
I have also upgrade the server to 8 CPU's and 8 GB, since it seemed to be struggling with an influx of new users tonight, so sorry about the brief downtime!
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask!
Thank you for the warm welcome. As @Smorks said there are many others behind the scenes that may or may not show up in the admin list over the next while.
We are currently actively preparing to transition the instance to a new dedicated server by the end of the weekend at the latest. We hope this higher powered server will be sufficient for the next few months but are ready with plans to scale up further when needed.
Unfortunately this means that there maybe some short periods of downtime over the weekend. We will make a post announcing planned downtime.
Where is lemmy.ca hosted? I'm looking at setting up a (non-competing, if that matters) public Lemmy instance and my usual host isn't much use for this. Just looking for suggestions.
Lemmy.ca is hosted on OVHcloud as they have a Canadian data center. If you're not specifically looking for a Canadian server, there's many other options that are priced more attractively.
Your hard work and dedication to lemmy.ca is deeply appreciated and Your decision to pass on hosting responsibilities highlights your commitment to this instance's growth. The new admins and the tireless efforts of everyone behind the scenes are truly valued.
Hello everyone! We'll be doing a brief maintenance window tomorrow around noon PT / 3pm ET for 15 minutes, as we move the site to a much more powerful machine to handle the influx of new users.
Thanks smorks! Truly appreciate you handing over instead of shutting down. And thanks to the new admins for taking it on!! I hope we all can make this work for a long time.
While incorporating as a non-profit association is 100% part of the plans, being recognized as a charitable organization to be able to make donations tax-deductible for donors is going to be a very difficult threshold to pass with what we are doing from what I recall last time I went through non-profit registration stuff. Will definitely look into it though.
If you do leave the server entirely and not just admin, I'm going to be "one of the few oldies" on the server that joined prior to the Reddit exodus...
Any chance we can get an overview of moderation policies, ideologies, and thoughts on things like defederation, bans, etc from the new admins? Even if "the rules aren't changing", just having different mates behind the wheel will inevitably have an impact on this stuff, and I'd like to be informed beforehand if at all possible! Welcome to the new admins! 😀
