Tomb Raider 2018 was a cool film

Finally finished the first two games from the recent trilogy and boy howdy is it an experience.

Thought that a movie was impossible, then remembered that there was a movie starring Alicia Vikander...

Went back to check and HOLY FUCK did the movie parallel the games so well.

It's obviously not a great way to do it... But TR is just not as grounded as we'd like to think.

The Last of Us worked since it has more grounded aspects... But when the climax of your game is Lara battling fucking undead Samurai, you have yourself a pickle.

However, a higher budget and a franchise guarantee would've made this an AWESOME experience... Imagine the bow and arrow scene from the movie, but with an older and more experienced Lara... Stealth shooting like in the games 😭❤️.

  • My biggest complaint about the movie was, since it was released in China and got a good portion of its financing from Chinese companies, they toned down the mystical elements because of rules regarding depictions of ghosts and the supernatural in China. For me, Tomb Raider works best when, even though Lara never fully believes in the supernatural, there's always a major supernatural element to it. Also, I wish they had given Lara dual pistols earlier in the movie, similar to the ending of the 2013 game, instead of doing the "oh look, she bought them when she got home" thing. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Alicia Vikander reboot, and I really wish they had been given a bigger budget and more freedom to do a real modern Lara Croft movie. But it kinda sucked that some of the most cinematic scenes from the games didn't make it into the movie especially things like the more atmospheric stealth night scenes. Still holding out for a sequel, that has been on and off again a couple times since the reboot released.

    • Didn't know about the china thing. I agree though... TR is a series that works well in actual tombs, but more importantly, in fantastical tombs with functional gears and shit 😂.

      Also, no Jonah.

  • Never played the games but I'm a big fan of AV so I enjoyed the movie.

    • I found out about her through this movie. No idea what else she's done but the fact that she buffed up for this role and looks the part is enough to keep me happy for a while.
