First comment. Looking forward to the new(ish) community full of familiar faces.
I have a weird request to the other Redfugees: I had considered going through and nuking my entire post history for all of my accounts. But then I realized that a lot of the advice that I've given on /linux and /python would be lost. I'm not a master at either, but I like to think that I've helped people out.
So before deleting everything as a (justified!) middle finger to a terrible CEO, take into account that what you've written is a part of a tapestry of internet history. 99.99% is trite. But you never know what future generations will find interesting or useful.
Just my $0.02.
I already nuked mine, and it was loads of tutorials/helpful comments. That was the most tangible way I could f them over. I also deleted images on other sites that explained things so that even if they restore my comments and posts like they have been doing (5 times so far) nothing of value will be gained. They fucked around, and hopefully they are gonna find out.
Get the gdpr request or some reddit backup program and sit on them for now. I hope some solution surfaces where ppl can plug their reddit history content into a 3d party archive.
I am too weak at networking to invent something like this
Tbf pullshift or whatever it's name is has like a decades worth of comments and was going to continue until Reddit killed it so ..
I'm in the same position. I haven't deleted yet. I'm considering the following:
- overwriting comments, deleting comments, deleting account
- keeping comments but adding a "left reddit for lemmy" and reasons why
- overwriting comments with a simple "left reddit for lemmy" and link to JoinLemmy
- overwriting comments with "Fuck Spez"
I'm still angry about everything and especially Spez's sociopathic behavior. Trying not to make a decision while angry (it's one of those rules of life).
I tried to overwrite all of mine, but Im an idiot and assumed it would all in one go. Oh well.. its all deleted. Hopefully, there's a way for me to be able to force them to delete anything thats still lingering
The problem is that all your helpful answers give value to reddit, which they use to make ad revenue. If you delete them, people might come asking somewhere else - like maybe the linux or python communities in the fediverse. 🤷♂️
Thats the reason I am hesitating on deleting all my stuff.
Some of the tips I have given for tech support for stuff over the years, while pretty much only has been useful to a small number of people, will no longer be accessible. Anyone googling in the future or trawling through reddit threads trying to find an answer will be met by my answer and a guy replying "Thanks! That worked" but my comment would be deleted.
I know that would suck and would affect other users so im not sure I want to do it. Even if it meant helping one person
I worried about that as well.. But, said fuck it and deleted all of it anyways. That way when a user thinks 'oh, heres a fix' they'll see [Deleted] and eventually get sick of Reddit links
Why not just copy the important shit and bring it over here? Or better yet, save it as a text file on your computer and post it wherever you go?
It's an interesting dilemma and I do think that's the inherent value in deleting your account and nuking your post history. Otherwise, you're just leaving it there for posterity for Reddit to benefit from into the future, as long as Reddit itself exists. Because there's no guarantee future generations would be able to access it anyway. And TPTB at Reddit might scrape all that info and dump it onto a new monetized platform forcing everyone who could potentially benefit from it to go through their paywall anyway. I say nuke away.
