I'm gonna be honest, I have no idea what's up with the whole Barbie movie thing. Why would any person over the age of 7 care about it? Why is the whole internet obsessed over it? Genuine question
Lemme tell you, it’s mostly not for 7 years olds. It’s more so for those who grew up in the 80s and 90s.
Aside from who it’s for, it is genuinely a very fun and funny movie. It’s impressive that it was produced given some of the swings it takes, and while not all of its messaging sticks the landing, it does a good job raising questions about modern masculinity, and women’s role in that world.
Well, I just asked because I was curious why people are talking about it, I'm not interested in the movie itself.
Every few months people will get raved up about something I couldn't give less of a fuck about and for about a month the internet becomes hell as everyone talks about this thing, from general topic podcasts to political streamers, etc. It was like that with the stupid purple hitler marvel movies, Squid Game, Arcane, etc.
Since it's somewhat political a number of people are bound to get their panties twisted in a bunch so hell will probably continue for the foreseeable future.
Because it's not a movie for people under 7. Except if you already explained to them concept like patriarchy or IRS fraud.
I'm a 37yo dude, and gladly been to watch it. The director made quite good few movies before it, and the promotion posters was quite fun. I was curious. When I left the theater I was a bit meh, but then rethinking about the whole thing I was wow.
It's just the first real event of a movie to happen since COVID. Huge, vibrant production targeted at the 20-30 age group. It also popped up fairly organically. There have been memes of people getting dressed up to go to the movies like minions, but Barbie was the first movie where I saw it pop up through people excited through the movie. It's not a perfect movie, but it's a social event the likes we haven't seen in 3-4 years so people are going crazy.
