Almost no videos or gifs on Lemmy

Is it just me or are there almost no videos or gifs on Lemmy? When browsing on reddit it used to be gif/short video after gif/short video.. Am I missing something or is the Lemmy crowd not liking that stuff?

  • So.. I'm speaking with little confidence in my words here.. But maybe this will spur someone to correct me lol.

I believe Lemmy doesn't embed photos and gifs and video as well yet. By that I mean, it seems like reddit could take a link provided by the user and find the meaningful content usually, then show it on your reddit card.

Since Lemmy is young, you have to make sure your link is directly to the content.

So if I give you a link to an imgur page, but not the direct link to the gif on that page, lemmy doesn't seem to embed it. Which is why they just show up as links right now, because people don't know to take that extra step. Or sometimes it's not easy to do.

    • Does it work though if I point to the file I want to have embedded?

Like would: example.com/media/movie.mov actually be displayed?

      • So I can't swear which media types work, but you have the right idea. I have done it with direct links to gif and jpg. I would do a test post on a community for testing to see if. Mov works as well.

Edit: I've tested some stuff on Lemmy.world/c/botplayground

  • I can doomscroll halfway decently with either Mlem or Memmy (iOS)

  • I just posted in [email protected] and there's a gif of some of my fish uploaded directly from my computer. The image embedding process was really easy, so I'm guessing we just haven't attracted the prolific gif posters yet. :)
