16 0 ReplyQuarter sawn means the grain is perpendicular to the face. There's plenty of quarter sawn boards in the other methods. Rift sawn means the grain is at 45° to the face. I've heard "live sawn" called "slab sawn" that includes the heart and it cups like a bastard.

Ah - I’ve just noticed the slightly different shade on the inner and outer pieces

The way quarter and rift sawn are shown, it would be virtually impossible to cut. There's no through-line that a sawblade could actually make.
6 3 ReplyThere is, quarter the log then cut boards from alternating sides of the resulting right angle.
