I intended for it to actually represent string fairy lights, but to give the impression of barbed wire like a haphazard fence.

You ever been trapped at a party and having a bad time? Maybe you came with someone, but they are off making vibrant conversation with their other friends and you want to leave, but you can't because they were your ride home? That's when the fairy lights start to look like barbed wire
