Investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen joins Dan to discuss the contents of her new book which, using insider and expert information, dramatically outlines how a nuclear war might unfold.
This is a great episode from Dan Carlin. While the subject is terrifying, it's also fascinating because it impacts all of us. Hope you enjoy!

Podcasts about relationships and sex?
What are your favourite relationship and sex podcasts, that are meant for non-teenagers?
So with less focus on hygiene, diseases and contraception, but more about how different adult people live their sexuality in their relationships. About what they like about their sex, what they don't like, how they get into the mood, how their sex changed over their lifetime and between different partners, and so on. Preferably with people from all genders, ages and sexual orientations.

Music podcasts?
Looking for recommendations of music podcasts. The only one I listen to is Afropop worldwide, which is one of my favorite podcasts/radio shows . I realize there aren't a ton of straight-up music podcasts because of copyright issues, but what have you got?

The nature podcast went from having one of the best intros to one of the worst
Their original intro was a banger. It's something like a ringtone trying to do pop punk. 5 seconds into the intro, the hosts start telling you the upcoming stories as the music fades in and out. A host tells the date and her name, then the other hosts introduce themselves. 40 seconds in, the show starts. The whole time that song was fun. A+ intro. I would have no problem listening to the intro anywhere.
Compare that to their current intro. It's a slow dollar store Brian eno jingle that swells as you hear the most cliche'd clips about what science is. You have an old professorial European talking about "data". You have an annoying kid asking a question about light. 40 seconds into the intro, and you're just getting the headlines. That just takes a few seconds, then you're forced to suffer through 10 more seconds of the Brian eNot.
An example of the old intro: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-02159-6 after just 5 seconds you're hearing about mollusk fossils
Example of the new intro: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-01230-1 It's cringe. I would die if someone heard that intro coming from my car (still a good podcast though).

Best app to listen to a podcast in chronological order ?
There are many mobile apps that help stream or download podcasts from different sources, I've mostly used Podverse until now. But this app, and the other ones I've tried like AntennaPod or Podcini are all better suited to follow podcasts as they come out, adding the new ones to the queue when they're added.
They're a bit less practical for those like history podcasts that you'd want to listen to in chronological order, even if you start it when there are hundreds of episodes out. It's possible to show oldest episodes first, but you still have to manually scroll down or search the next episode everytime. Is there any way in one of these apps or another one to automatically add the next episode (by release date) to the queue?

Request: Podcasts dismantling right wing pundits’ rhetoric, which isn’t snarky mediocre comedians
I like the “facts and logic” crowd having their arguments torn down with actual facts and logic. I don’t like cutaway gags, ridiculous hyperbole delivered in an exasperated tone, shoehorned Obama worship coated in an “I’m not saying he was perfect” disclaimer, or recurring meta-gags. This cuts out most snark podcasts which, unfortunately, make up a lot of the most popular podcasts tackling right wing pundits.
Ideally, I want an introduction to the right-wing narrative of the week, and a firm put-down delivered in a documentary fashion. I don’t want hosts who I can see 2 nights a week at Second City or hear on half a dozen other podcasts.
Any suggestions welcome.

Hollywood Exiles
Host Oona Chaplin tells the story of the decades-long campaign to root out communism in Hollywood. It’s a campaign that eventually drove her grandfather, Charlie Chaplin, and many others out of tinseltown. Hollywood Exiles is a tale of glamour, duplicity and political intrigue that reverberates to this day. It’s the story of how Tinseltown became an ideological battleground. The toll of the fight was enormous – reputations, careers and families were torn apart by the campaign to drive communists from the movie business.

Favorite comedy podcast
Even though it's pretty subjective, I'm curious what other comedy podcasts out there are on the top of their game.
Currently I've been listening to Your Mom's House but I've heard from others that it's fallen a bit since it's earlier years.

The new gurus (by Helen Lewis)
Description
"The New Gurus" is a podcast series created by Helen Lewis for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. The podcast explores the rise of internet gurus in various fields, such as productivity hackers, dating coaches, crypto enthusiasts, and wellness influencers. Across eight episodes, Helen Lewis investigates the origins of these charismatic individuals, the power they wield, and the reasons behind people turning away from mainstream medicine, politics, and media to embrace their advice. The series aims to provide insight into the appeal and potential dangers of these internet gurus and what their popularity says about society.
Personal opinion
Helen Lewis seems like an absolute treasure. Just discovered her yesterday through another podcasts. Now I'm not exactly a fan of the BBC, but she strikes me as the personification of exactly what journalism should be and desperately needs to be. I don't mean any ill will towards her career, but I genuinely hope she considers branching out independently someday. If she does, I'll be among the first to support her as a paid subscriber.

Eli5 The Businessmodel of IHeart Radio. How does this work?
Occasional SYSK Listener here. I am baffled by the amount of new shows that pop up under the their Banner. Thematically these Shows are totally random and they only ever seem to get advertised for a very short period befor the next one takes their place. Are they just pumping out these shows hoping one is a hit and makes worth all the misses? How is this sustainable? Especially since they only ever seem to advertise their own networks Content?

What are we listening to this week?
I've recently finished the fantastic series on BBC Sounds about the events at the Fukashima nuclear power plant a decade ago. Each episode is roughly half an hour long, and it's really well acted and very engaging (It's called Fukashima)
Another from the BBC that I've been loving is Call Jonathan Pie. Okay so Jonathan Pie is a YouTube satirical journalist. In the podcast he's taking calls from the general public. As someone who's usually on board with his politics I think it's pretty great.
What about you?

Anyone else listening to Hard Fork from NYT?
Lots of AI news, which suits me.
While UnderUnderstood feels more like the spiritual successor to Gimlet's Reply All, the co-hosts of Hard Fork (Kevin Roose and Casey Newton) banter in a way that reminds me of P. J. Vogt and Alex Goldman.
