Sort by Active - is it working any better these days?

I'm not sure where to look for information about general Lemmy federation updates, but I'm wondering if the "Sort by Active" issues have been improved. As of a month ago, people said that it was best to use "Top Twelve Hours" because of some bug with "Active". Does anyone know if the problem has been improved?

Problem acessing a [email protected] post comments

I subscribe to [email protected] and there is a recent post about Python and Excel. I can access the article but I can't see any comments while using my lemm.ee account. I switched to my lemdro.id account and I can see the comments. I'm curious why there is a disconnect. Is it because the posting came from someone on kbin? This is the link to the posting that I grabbed while logged into lemm.ee:

How do I access a specific post on another instance from my lemm.ee account?
  • I installed Sync and logged in with just my lemm.ee account and clicked the link in my above post. I was taken to the post, but I couldn't see any of the comments, but I saw the indicator showing that 52 comments existed. I was able to up vote the post, but I didn't try to reply.

I'll explore some of the other suggestions. Thanks

  • Nearly 80% of Texas' floating border barrier is technically in Mexico, survey finds
  • Sounds like Mexico can just take down most of this thing.

Edit: As a US citizen, I support Mexico's immigration services to detain any Texas construction workers that illegally cross the border to service this thing.

I also would support the governor of this region of Mexico to put these construction workers on a bus and drop them deep in the heart of Mexico somewhere.

  • How do I access a specific post on another instance from my lemm.ee account?
  • I was using Firefox on Android when I found the link from the Google search. I have many apps, but not Sync. I will try that. I tried finding the post using one of my apps by scrolling through that community, while logged in only with the lemm.ee account, but I couldn't seem to find it.

  • How do I access a specific post on another instance from my lemm.ee account?
  • I tried that in Liftoff, but it opened in the browser built into the app. I was already logged into my lemmy.world account (in Firefox, which seemed to be rendering the page in the app), and I was able to comment but it was posted from that account. I went to Firefox and logged out of .world and tried again, but then it said "You must login to comment" from within the app.

I toggled "use in app browser" in the Liftoff settings, but then when I clicked the link it just opened Firefox and took me to that page.

  • How do I access a specific post on another instance from my lemm.ee account?

I searched for information and Google pointed me to a Lemmy posting at: https://lemmy.world/post/1697414

My main account is this one on lemm.ee and I would like to comment in that post from this account, but I can't figure out how to view that specific post from this account. Is there some trick with putting a "!" in front of that path?

What song has good lyrics because of the idea/lesson/experience it shares?
  • I find one line particularly powerful, and it's been used in a couple famous songs.

Jenny Lou Carson (1944), made popular by Willie Nelson (1966)

I'd trade all of my tomorrows for just one yesterday For what good is life without the one you love I'd trade all of my tomorrows, they're worthless anyway If my arms can't hold the one I am dreaming of

Just an empty world is all I have before me I'd give anything if you were with me now I'd trade all of my tomorrows for just one yesterday I don't want to live without you anyhow

Kris Kristofferson Me and Bobby McGee (1969)

And I'd trade all of my tomorrows For one single yesterday Holdin' Bobby's body next to mine Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose Nothin' left is all that Bobby left me.

  • Trump criticizes judge after he’s warned against ‘inflammatory statements’
  • I read somewhere that the order of "locking him up" could be appealed extensively and would be an effective delay tactic for him. I think that is why the DC judge wants to speed things up in response to this behavior.

  • Can anyone recommend a way to share bookmarks between Firefox and Chrome across multiple devices?

I'm using Firefox more as my first choice, but I can't get away from Chrome completely because of work. I still consider my Chrome bookmarks the "master" and occasionally sync them to Firefox. I would like to be able to bookmark something while in Firefox and then have it available from my other devices using either browser. Is there a way to have my bookmarks stored in a common location, like Google Drive, and accessed from either browser? I tried Floccus with Google Drive as the location but I can't get it to work.

Is there a "compact view" for the web interface?
  • Thanks. I tried it with the suggested -it command and my terminal prompt didn't come back. Then I went with -d (for detach) and it runs. I wonder why they suggest the -it option for docker run?

Although I can't login to my lemm.ee account, so maybe I need the -it for something else.

  • Is there a "compact view" for the web interface?

This question isn't specific to lemm.ee, but any Lemmy instance with the standard web interface. Is there a way to make the postings on the home page more compact? For example, the fairly large image thumbnail takes up vertical space and makes for more scrolling to read the various postings. Not a big deal, but I like my experience to be more text-based and concise.

Edit: I just found the "themes" in the settings and found more compact settings. Nevermind.

  • This page is a nice way to see headlines for various topics.

    https://brutalist.report/?limit=15

You can make an account and choose the sources you want and how many titles to show. That link will show 15 titles from each source. The titles refresh often, so it stays fresh.

Edit: Actually, I just compared the page before and after I logged in and I'm not sure if you can customize the sources. I'm not sure what the account actually does. If you want to specify your sources, I like using this online RSS reader: https://theoldreader.com/

I've been using since Google got rid of their reader. This one is sort of a copy. The site holds the RSS feeds that you enter, and there is an Android app that will let you sign in an view from mobile. I think the app is called gReader.

  • What's the difference between "College" and "University"?
  • In the US, a University is usually a collection of colleges. Each college has a somewhat independent structure from other colleges within the University, and each is led by its own Dean. Each college has different requirements of entry and provide rules for what it takes to get a degree from that college. But ultimately, you get a degree from something like "The University of Whatever, College of Engineering". All the colleges have some certain amount of oversight and guidelines set up by the overall institution.

  • How do I subscribe to a community on another instance?

    This isn't specific to lemm.ee, but I found a community called https://squabbles.io/s/technology

But I can't see any place on lemm.ee that lets me subscribe to it from my lemm.ee account. I searched for it under Communities, but it doesn't show up as an option.
