The Disappearance of an Internet Domain
  • Exactly this. Another factor in choosing TLDs is that they have different rules. Read those rules closely. Some of them make it much easier for them to take the domain names away from you, for things like copyright infringement, for example. .COM/.NET/.ORG have the strongest rules protecting your ownership, as far as I can recall. This is one of the reasons I stick to those old 3 rather than using newer gTLDs like .INFO, .BIZ, etc.

  • The Dislike to Ubuntu
  • Just wanted to add something for future reference of anyone reading your post: after Canonical did this, LXD was forked by Linux Containers into a new project named Incus.

  • California’s new law forces digital stores to admit you’re just licensing content, not buying it
  • Not trying to argue, but I don't believe I can re-sell my copy of a game I "bought" on GOG, so in my view that's not full ownership as most people understand it. If you're a full, legal owner of some property, you can sell that property anywhere you like.

  • NIST proposes barring some of the most nonsensical password rules
  • It's crazy that they didn't include all the "should" items in that list. If you read the entire section, there's a critical element that's missing in the list, which is that new passwords should be checked against blocklists. Otherwise, if you combine 1, 5, and 6, you end up with people using "password" as their password, and keeping that forever. Really, really poor organization on their part. I'm already fighting this at work.

  • What policy topic do you feel the majority of Lemmy/the Fediverse disagrees with, but that you can back up with bulletproof logic?
  • Yeah, like you said, probably a bad idea. I have something that I deeply believe in about current world events that seems completely obvious to me and yet I usually never say online because of people's unhinged reactions. I'm not sure that there is anything to be gained by discussing it because people tend to immediately froth at the mouth about the topic.

  • Ventoy source code contains some unknown BLOBs, still no word on the issue from the dev after months
  • Ugh, balenaetcher messed with my USB pen drive so that I had to jump through hoops to make it usable again. Based on web searches, this was not uncommon at that time. I haven't had issues with ventoy so far. However, maybe I'll just go back to Rufus.

  • Recommend a KVM or Switch
  • I picked up one of these ugreen displayport KVMs a couple months ago and so far have been happy with it:

The only issue I have had is that if I'm switched to computer B and computer A goes to sleep, I cannot wake it up through the switch. This was not a deal breaker for me because I have easy access to the power button of both computers. I wonder if this issue may be resolved by powering the switch with a USB-C power plug, since it otherwise requires USB power from both computer connections.
