Starship Development Thread #56
  • Starbase activities (2024-05-17):

    Interesting statement by the FAA to NSF regarding IFT-3 mishap investigation:

    https://x.com/BCCarCounters/status/1791600893151821827

    Statement of FAA provided to @NASASpaceflight about SpaceX led investigation:

    "If the FAA agrees no public safety issues were involved in the mishap, the operator may return to flight while the mishap investigation remains open, provided all other license requirements are met."

    https://x.com/BCCarCounters/status/1791611426991157438

    NSF followed up with the question if this would mean that a positive outcome of this investigation would mean the launch license will be modified before the mishab is closed?

    The FAA answered: "Yes, provided all other license requirements are met."

    FAQ

    1. When next launch? Wen IFT-4? IFT-4 is now NET June 1st. "Objective is for the ship to get past max heating or at least further than last time."
    2. When previous launch? (IFT-3)? Booster 10 and Ship 28 launched on 2024-03-14.
    3. What was the result? Booster makes it to the landing burn, but loses control and insufficient engines relight. RUD occurs at 462 m in altitude. S28 makes it to reentry but fails to face the heat shield in the correct direction, followed shortly by RUD. Payload door test and propellant transfer demo "complete".

  • A quandary: Best way to extract the YouTube video ID of a pre-roll advertisement?
  • What’s the challenge with extracting from the url?

    One problem with the first approach is that ytp-cued-thumbnail-overlay-image does not seem to exist in all cases, so it seems (to me, at least) like an unreliable method.

    For the second approach, I'm not sure how one would go about locating the adVideoId text.

    • Should I be trying to automatically search the page HTML for it?
    • Should I be trying to figure out where it is ahead of time, and navigate to it via the DOM tree?
    • Something else entirely?
  • Then and Now
  • Are there paleontology jobs which are primarily indoors? I'm thinking of tasks like removing the matrix from fossils which have already been dug up, but need to be prepared for preservation.

  • Alberta claims renewables pause wasn’t political. Emails, texts say otherwise | The Narwhal
  • Huh, I never thought about this. The plurality norms don't quite match snail mail.

    • "The mail is here" (this sounds normal)
    • "The mails are here" (this sounds unusual)
    • "I got an email" (this sounds normal)
    • "I got a letter" (this sounds normal)
    • "I got a mail" (this sounds unusual)

    I guess this comes down to the fact that there is no widely-used word for a single piece of electronic mail. Perhaps "eletter" would be the analogue, but I've never seen it used. As a result, "email" is used for both a single piece, and the category as a whole.

  • The stack is back! (B11 and S29 for IFT-4)

    Other:

    • Aspirational Mars goals from the CEO: "Less than 5 years for uncrewed, less than 10 to land people, maybe a city in 20 years, but for sure in 30, civilization secured." I'll eat my hat Beck-style if this timeline holds, but I'm glad he's still ambitious.
    • IFT-4 launch license for early June should be feasible for the FAA.
  • A quandary: Best way to extract the YouTube video ID of a pre-roll advertisement?

    I can do this manually using the following: Right-click on the video player, copy debug info, paste into text editor, and Ctrl+F for "addocid".

    What is the best way to do this automatically?

    By modifying an ad accelerator I found, I can reliably detect when a pre-roll ad is playing:

    ``` function handleVideoAd() { const video = document.querySelector('video'); const adElement = document.querySelector('.video-ads.ytp-ad-module'); if (video && adElement && adElement.children.length > 0) { alert('advertisement found!') } }
    function initializeAdHandling() { handleVideoAd(); const observer = new MutationObserver(handleVideoAd); observer.observe(document.body, { childList: true, subtree: true }); } initializeAdHandling() ```
    If I had the video ID, I could then open the video in a new tab using something like:
    window.open('https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adVideoID');
    However, I am at a bit of a loss as to how to extract the ad video ID itself.
    In the browser inspector, the only places I can find the ad video ID are:
    1. Within the URL for ytp-cued-thumbnail-overlay-image
    2. As adVideoId within var ytInitialPlayerResponse, which itself is within <script nonce="rwc3vYf3vRLEyNQKsJOgig">, where rwc3vYf3vRLEyNQKsJOgig changes with every video.
    What would be the best way to extract the advertisement video ID?
    Apologies for if I'm going about this the wrong way. I am (very!) new to JavaScript, but interested in learning. Please let me know if I've broken any community rules, or committed any other sort of faux pas. Thanks! :)
    Tesla to Add Restricted Driver Profiles for Safer Teen Driving
  • You've obviously not read past the headline. These restricted profiles would configured by the teen's parent or guardian, not by Tesla.
    Over the years, many people have asked Tesla to bring in restricted driver profiles, similar to Tesla’s currently existing Valet Mode. Valet Mode already serves to restrict the car’s maximum speed, reduces acceleration, and disables the use of Autopilot and FSD. The new restricted profiles will let you apply certain restrictions to driver profiles without the full-fledged restrictions of Valet Mode which also limits HomeLink, GPS history and more.
