The problem is that while consumers may be picking up, the biggest drivers of the Chinese economy — property and exports — are going to stay dormant. Consumer consumption makes up about 37% of the Chinese economy (in the US that figure is about 70%). So a return to normal activity from consumers is helpful, but it's not enough to carry the economy. China was never going to be able to deliver on the miracle reopening that Wall Street wanted without getting the wheels of its massive export and property machines moving. Beijing has tried to shift the country toward a consumption model, like the US, but exports still make up 20% of China's economy. In May, outbound shipments declined by 7.5%, the first decrease this year.

China is in a catch 22 - They need to produce inexpensive products to make them attractive for export to the US and other places, but they need salaries to rise internally in order for their citizens to shift to consumption, but that would increase the prices of their goods. Combine that with an aging population and anti-China sentiment in much of the western world the future is definitely uncertain.

I agree. Let's see if the mods have the stomach to keep the subreddit's dark indefinitely. I also wonder if Reddit will just take over the larger subs and install new mods?

Most days I carry a Mountain Voyage Carbon Fiber look wallet (Ridge knockoff that is about 1/2 the cost) and I really like it, but these kinds of wallets are not for everyone. I have about 8 cards in it and cash under the money clip.

When I am out hiking, going to the beach, etc., I prefer the Chums Surf Short zip wallet, which is an amazingly functional and durable wallet that costs around $12. I like it so much I could probably carry it every day if I didn't have the Mountain Voyage wallet.

Yes, good point. I really feel something like this is more of a building surge, rather than a tsunami. A lot of us leaving is not going to sink them in the near term, but they will slowly see an erosion of quality posts and more importantly quality comments. I've heard they really want to monetize access to all the conversations for data harvesting, and if the overall quality of that drops, the whole thing is worth a lot less.

Yes, but most of the traffic is from people going to the front page and seeing /all (this is what I read yesterday, I am assuming it is correct). My guess is most visitors who use Reddit's apps or go in through the browser are not participating in the blackout, or maybe don't care, so there will still be a large number of posts. The people supporting the blackout likely make up a large percentage of users who comment on new posts, and that is way down. I'm seeing a lot of posts, but far fewer comments on those posts.

The blackout is definitely having an impact on Reddit traffic, especially the level of commenting on posts. Look at https://blackout.photon-reddit.com/ and the posts and comments per minute. The comments are usually up to the top or above the number of posts and they are way down. Posts overall are way down as well.

First of all, thanks for moderating r/edc as that is one of my favorite subs. 2nd question - are there plans for setting up an equivalent over here? I have seen a lot of new “magazines” on K-bin the last few days, but it would be great to get sanctioned, equivalent subs over here and then more Reddit regulars could simply “move on over”. Maybe that is happening, and I just don’t know how to fine it? Some instances, like Beehaw, are restrictive in creating new communities, not sure what the process is for doing that in those locations.

I really think at this point I am done with Reddit. The attitude Spez and the other admins showed in that AMA was disrespectful to users and mods. Reddit is just a platform, they don’t create content, and the mods work for free as far as I know. To give a big FU to users the way they did is all I needed to see. I am going to use Lemmy and continue to use Mastodon for better or worse, but so far, I am liking it more and more over here.

I’m a Reddit refugee, been trying Beehaw and Kbin. Kudos to whatever was done to improve the speed here, it is lightning fast today! Kbin, not so much - the owner there had to implement DDOS protection and it is largely unusable at the moment. All of this is a work in progress and is rather exciting! I am going to switch over to Lemmy in full from Reddit, and I think this will end up being just fine.

Maybe a stupid question from a Newb here such as myself, but are there currently any good 3rd party clients for Android and iOS that support Lemmy? I’ve been looking around here using the browser and this platform has promise, but being able to use clients like Apollo, Sync for Reddit, etc, would really make it more useful in my opinion.
