What have you been reading recently?
  • I just got the second edition of Ultra Violet Grasslands and have been reading it a lot.

I’m planning to run it at some point, but I didn’t like the system it comes with (Synthetic Dream Machine - the new version of SEACAT). Have anyone used other systems to run UVG? Any recommendations or tips? I’m thinking of using Into the Odd/Bastionland, but still not sure.

  • I have a little bit of frustration with the new Dragonbane edition. It looks like an awesome system with some neat ideas, but the core set feels like it's missing content. It feels more like a starter set than anything.

There are just a handful of spells, not too many monsters (and almost no guidance on how to create more), a lot of references in the book like "there might be more of these in next supplements". It mentions treasures, but they are not in the book, they are in a deck of cards that comes with the box set and are super limited.

The GM chapter is also super lacking, it's just the final 10 pages of the book. The pages on "Creating Adventures" even says "By looking at how adventures are structured in the Adventures book, you can easily put together your own.", which is not helpful at all and it's not how you teach a new GM to make adventures...

  • I think BRP style skill resolution is good because it’s boring.

I always thought about this as well. It's so simple, yet so effective. You don't need to fiddle with target numbers, crazy probabilities, etc. Players instantly know how much they need on the dice and what are their changes. It's super easy for new players to understand it.

  • Thoughts on skills in OSR systems and WWN

I know a lot of players have strong opinions on skills/feats in OSR systems, afaik normally towards the negative side. But even then, I often see Worlds Without Number (WWN) as one of the most recommended system around, and that system has skills/feats.

So, I'm just curious on why is that? Is it because of the way they are implemented? Or maybe people are recommending it more for the GM tools and guidance instead of the system itself? What do you all think about the skills/feats implementation on WWN? Any other opinions on skills/feats systems in OSR games in general?
