Minor rule change on Trolling:
  • You had dozens of people telling you what he was doing. It had zero to do with vague feelings and practically nothing to do with his opinions, despite that always being the claim. It had to do with very obvious trolling. If I get banned for "sassing" you, that will say a lot

  • A note on Universal Monk:
  • Not sure if you saw this https://lemm.ee/post/45848048

I read this as "leave us alone about trolls, just block them". Because while they say to report them first, we all saw how that went with UM. Lots of us were ignored for weeks. So Lemmy is only better than Facebook in that it's smaller. So fucking disappointing. Trolls will be free to troll.

  • Minor rule change on Trolling:
  • An excuse NOT to ban them? That seemed to be the process. And now you've told us to just report and block them.

If hundreds of reports did nothing for weeks about the most obvious troll I've ever seen, I have no faith at all that reporting and blocking trolls will help the fediverse in the least. They will be free to run their election interference campaigns just like on Facebook.

I know modding isn't easy but Jesus this case surely was. No fucking way anyone believed he wasn't a troll if they actually looked at their activity.

  • Minor rule change on Trolling:
  • So no reaction at all to the fact that UM is now admitting to being part of a larger troll effort, after dozens of people told you that was likely, for weeks, and you dismissed all of them repeatedly?

Seems like we were all right and UM should've been banned long ago. Everyone who said they weren't a troll was entirely wrong. That doesn't seem to be acknowledged here at all.

  • Minor rule change on Trolling:
  • You can't blame the community here for being kind of frustrated with this response. Many people reported trolling behavior for a long time before that ban finally happened. If the things I reported them for myself aren't trolling then I don't know would qualify as trolling.

Several other instances banned UM for trolling long before .world did. Because it wasn't unclear.

  • Minor rule change on Trolling:
  • Here is a gem of a DM from the troll who led to this even-more-hands-off approach, bragging about how they will get away with their influence/troll campaign scot-free.

Notice the use of the word "we", a tacit admission that they are working in coordination with other trolls. Pretty fucking great, eh?

  • A note on Universal Monk:
  • I couldn't agree with you more. Thank you for calling him out. I can definitely say that comments like yours help me keep my resolve and think "it's not just me! Everyone can see it!"

If you and others hadnt kept calling him on his shit I would've eventually probably just stopped using Lemmy tbh. Users like that absolutely shit in the pool. I'm sure he'd have a lot of whining to do about how he was persecuted for having a different point of view but we all know that was bullshit. Luckily we don't have to endure that whining!

  • Yeah this a wall of text. To be honest I can't really spend my already limited time reading 15 paragraphs from someone who ignores relevant points I raise.

In this case, I addressed the ban reason given, and yet you try to argue more about it as though I didn't. If you cared about more than disputing me, you might see that this was probably death by a million paper cuts.

  • RIP. I'm sure he'll be back with alts, but here are the final stats:

  • Union boss ignored university’s request to change polarising speech
  • I think it's obvious I've thought a lot about this, if you have any context outside of these couple of comments here. Which if you've been noticing this user at all, you would have a lot more context... Mods addressed it here, for example.

In any case, the mods/admins finally decided that they agree with the extremely popular opinion you're taking issue with. He's permabanned now.

Their stated reason is a little confusing, because they mention dms specifically. That's certainly true and I've been on the receiving end of that several times actually. Just a couple nights ago they were dming me, bragging hard about how great their life is and how they have tons of free time to post. Stuff like "I get to do whatever I want, allll day. My house is paid off, I have all day, so I can do that. My life is great!"

The modlog links to a rule that cites sealioning and trolling being not ok. So I suspect after the influx of complaints they got, they almost had trouble even picking a specific explanation. The dude was 100% trying to piss people off and succeeded many, many, thousands of times.

To address your criticism of my script, a couple days ago one of the mods told me explicitly they were using it as evidence when talking to admins about the issue. Another mod said a few of them were playing with it and finding it useful.

Two days later, dude is banned. So yeah, the remaining tides turned. I think the script was a large part of it. I'm certain he'll be back with alts, so the script I wrote for problem users like this will likely come in handy moving forward.
