Unhappy with Lemmy
  • I’m not sure if you will find much sympathy here. Many people (myself included) left Reddit because their policies and ethics now outweigh the benefits of a refined, smooth experience. Although, even that may be gone now if you’re switching from Apollo to the default Reddit app…

The communities here have made any occasional glitches worth it for me.

P.S. you can set your sorting preference under Settings.

  • www.bbc.co.uk Inside North Korea: “We are stuck, waiting to die”

For months, the BBC has been communicating in secret with three North Koreans living in the country. They expose, for the first time, the disaster unfolding there since the government sealed the borders more than three years ago.

What temperature range do you like your thermostat/heater set to in winter?
  • It is summer here, so our night temp is set to 21C and daytime temp is set to 24C. If we’re away, the AC will turn off.

In winter, I think we keep the house at 18C at night and maybe 19-20C during the day. Our eco mode minimum is set to 15C so the pipes don’t freeze.

I also prefer cooler, but we set our temps in a way to save on our electric bill.

I’m in Canada and we definitely couldn’t just turn off our furnace in the winter - things start exploding when it is -30C or lower.

  • Why is the front page suddenly so stale?
  • I think a lot of new users are coming in and interacting with the first post they see, which is usually the post at the top of the “hot” feed. In turn, this keeps the “hot” posts up longer because of the constant interaction.

I expect it’ll cycle through within the week once the blackout is up.

  • Unionized B.C. port workers vote 99% in favour of strike mandate | Globalnews.ca
  • Would anyone be able to comment on the tangible effects of the strike? The article just says it could have “damaging effects on the economy” - are we talking shortage of goods or something else? What flows through the BC ports?

    Discussion of language about Lemmy.
  • Your metaphor of multiple instances = multiple “Reddits” is exactly how I think of it as a layperson!

A few other people use the email metaphor, but I found it not as digestible since email is not a forum.

  • If I buy a chair from my neighbors and he does not declare the income and I pay no tax, is this a black market? What kind of market is this?
  • When it comes to income and taxation, there is a lot more grey than you think.

Technically, ALL income for business-earning purposes should be reported and taxed accordingly.

Regarding taxation of the buyer, at least in Canada, GST is generally not applicable until the seller is earning $30K+.

But REALISTICALLY - no taxation agency really cares about 1 chair.

I probably wouldn’t consider it a black market/underground economy unless it was significant and ongoing. E.g., your neighbours REGULARLY sell chairs for profit and don’t report their earnings.

  • A Swiss university did a deep dive into Calgary's 'missing middle.'
  • So frustrating to see city councillors originally voting down the housing affordability recommendations because they included zoning for more duplexes, townhouses, etc. Good heavens - it is not like someone is putting up a pig farm in your backyard.

All in all, very cool to see Calgary getting attention on the international stage.

  • Do your part, try not to lurk!
  • I agree, the hardest part for me was getting started.

“I like news - I’ll just register on the news Lemmy!” Ah. Sweet summer child.

Luckily I stumbled across my current instance and the creator seemed friendly and like a decent human being. But I doubt many casual Redditors will have the same patience to figure it out.

  • Have a wonderful day, witches!

Thought I’d do my part to help kick off this community!
