Proper sound balancing
  • I've included some images that, no matter how you proceed, should give you a better understanding of frequencies, dB levels, and how to mix better.

Mixing voice into an already recorded track would need more then just volume level adjustments.

There's a bunch of methods, some better, depending on your os, software, gear, etc.

I'd be happy to help get you directed to some software based on your available setup and ability. (there's an almost infinite supply of free stuff out there for every need)

Assuming you can find a basic daw or audio software you can do the following:

The most basic way to mix vocals would be steps 1 through 4. 1 through 6 for a sharper, fuller sound. All of them for overkill but possibly the best result.

    1. Set a ceiling (the Max volume of the mix) of maybe -4db (this allows you to increase overall volume later) using a compressor or limiter.

    2. Vocals should almost always be recorded and mixed in mono. Centered. Compress / limit Around -9db max

    3. Stereo separate the music/background track. A mid-side stereo mixer would make it simple. They split the low, mid, high frequencies to sides or middle, effectively giving room for each to breathe. This track is likely already mastered so no compression, just limit to around -12db.

    4. Listen to mix. Sound OK?
      Listen in mono. Sound OK?
      You're done!

    5. I would EQ both. Cutting a space for the vocal to sit in the existing music / background track in the vocal range.
And limiting the frequency range of the vocal track.

    6. Compressing it would be a good next step - Another post mentioned you could sidechain/duck. I agree. Have the vocal trigger compression on the background track. A multiband/dynamic eq compressor would be ideal.

    7. Then eq again for clarity and depth.

    8. Increase volume / compress up to 0db.

(Also, Composing Gloves on YouTube is amazing for theory and practical application. They use fl studio, but the mixing/mastering theory/methods are universal principals of mixing)

  • Despite tech-savvy reputation, Gen Z falls behind in keyboard typing skills
  • I don't even know how fast I can type on a phone.

Even with word completion I find myself hesitating between the choice of word or typing it out.

I know it's not near as fast as on a physical keyboard where is used to be around 90-120 wpm if I remember correctly. (Been a while since I had to do that at an employment agency)

Anyway, it'd be fun to see a thumbs only tiktok/Snapchat typer vs a mechanical typewriter type off.

And, tbf, most people are far from tech savvy.

Most are consumers. Some are really good consumers. Some are power users. Some know how to do things.

    Very few actually understand it.

But, there was a time where there was indeed a necessity if you used the tech, you had to understand it.

How does a tree (or any plant, really), know to evolve to produce a delicious fruit or a poison berry, a seed inside an impenetrable shell, or invent a type of flying machine, in order to reproduce? (Each of these examples exists in my backyard)

How do they receive feedback about their evolutionary experiments? How do they know it worked/failed. [10]

    update issues

Jerboa was the first client i tried. I've tried several others. Jerboa is my lemmy app.

The only thing that bothers me is after an update (this happens using both izzy and fdroid repos) upon relaunch i get "network error". It looks like i'm still logged in but my username is gone from the sidebar. If i try to log in i get json errors popping up in red text into the ui. Not a dialogue window, but within the background graphics.

I have to manually log out, close app, and login again.

This issue has been persistent across a number of updates since i started using the app.

I use a vpn/dns/firewall but have the app excluded/bypassed, except the dns (dnscrypt/doh/tls fallback.) Dns allows everything it should. ?

    Android 13, may security updates.

Images show dns from store refresh to relaunch after update. Will pull logcat to see if it shows anything.

    thank you.

Just wanted to say thanks to the host of this instance.

The mini essay was a great idea. I definitely believe it will keep out at least some level of the riff and the raff. As much as people may dislike the idea of a gatekeeper, I believe it will make and keep the community much more fun, friendly, and useful.

I feel much more at ease on this service than on Reddit. I don't feel like I'm arguing with bots and trolls. Or dealing with bad actors and agitators. I'm discussing things. Reading the actual articles. And not doom scrolling. The nature of this service seems more organic.

Again. Thank you for your time and service to this (hopefully) growing community.
