Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?
  • Linux gives you freedom.

    Freedom lets you break stuff.

If, like Windows or MacOSyou just use it as intended by official support, it should be fine. If you start just adding everything and anything from anyone you're gonna break stuff.

Other stuff is made to be idiot proof, Linux is not.

  • Signal president says company will not comply with U.K. ‘mass surveillance’ law
  • This seems more like UK Gov vs. WhatsApp.

Nice Signal are also holding their ground but they are a little fish in a big pond. The Government uses WhatApp heavily and there have been quite a few leaks, assume they would love a wee backdoor.

  • Experiences with Nicotine?
  • Glad to hear.

Had similar struggles, but glad I pushed though.

Between my Android phone, pi & stereo I now have music on the go and in the house that can beat what I had with Windows, Limewire, stereo & a 20GB ipod classic ~2003. Better late than never.

  • Experiences with Nicotine?
  • I was struggling too...ended up being I had a space or a tab or something in the yml config file and everything just worked...I was messing about with symlinks, remounting drives under /home and it was all due to one blank space in the config I think.

I've got navidrome on my pi too and Symfonium & Tailscale on my Android....awesome to be able to grab tracks, in flac, anywhere in the world and immediately stream them back using MP3 or ogg.

  • What are some good uses for an old laptop?
  • Check out the 'selfhosting' communities.

Retro gaming is an another option, Arcade Punks have a lot for resources for this. I don't retro game that often and storage speed is not an issue when I do so I have a few old drives with gaming systems on them I can just connect via usb & boot into when I'm in the mood.

On YouTube Network Chuck, Jeff Geerling and Explaining Computers have a lot of easy to access tutorials on setting up server stuff but most of it you can just copy & paste from tutorial sites or github.

Connect a few TB's of storage via usb, hdd dock is great but use whatever you can get. You could even run the OS from a USB stick and use the internal drive just for media storage, I done this for years with a 2008 pc server running Alpine Linux......as you have loads of ram you could even run the entire OS in ram from usb for an even faster system than ssd will provide with Alpine's diskless or disk data options.

Tailscale was a big one for me. Makes it simple to install on my server, laptop, desktop & phone so they can all talk to each other when out and about instead of worrying too much about firewalls and open ports at home....I am looking into this for hosting my own Lemmy instance at the moment.

If you have a personal music collection Navidrome + Symfonium, or other client, is amazing imo. Spotify killer. I also have slskd docker daemon running for soulseek so I can download flac music to my server when out and about and instantly stream it as mp3/ogg to my android device or laptop. Jellyfin and a torrent deamon does a similar job for video. As other have mentioned Pihole is cool and stuff like NextCloud too.

  • where are the (good) subs?
  • Best bet at the moment is to look for a sub about dogs, or even just animals, as opposed to hoping for a vibrant labradoodle community. Or cars, instead of The Honda Civic Users Club.

The entirety of Lemmy & Kbin is around that of a medium sized subreddit at the moment.

I've decided to ditched the subscription option, it feels largely pointless for me aside from expressing support at the moment. The whole thing can be managed as one would a subreddit using the local/all/hot/new/timescale/active options, the text search and alerts system.

  • what to do with virtual machines?
  • Yes.

Easiest to use separate containers tho. Jellyfin, Navidrome, Slskd, even Lemmy all provide Docker images just ready to pull. They tend to take up far less space and resources than a VM.

If it's just for personal use I find Tailscale great....no need to worry about opening ports on my home router.

My phone, laptop & rpi server all talk to each other outwith the home network via Tailscale.

  • what to do with virtual machines?
  • Docker is similar to a VM. It's a vilitualized container. They are used very heavily in enterprise stuff afaik.

    I can run:

    docker pull ubuntu

And have a virtual Ubuntu server up and running in seconds. Or Arch, Alpine or whatever.

Beyond just OS images many applications are packaged as docker containers as it comes with all the libraries, databases and underlying OS all set up, ready to go and easy to update.

I have Jellyfin & Navidrome docker instances so I can stream my video & music collection around my house and to my phone or laptop when away from home. They are a bit like Plex. Navidrome + Symfonium beats Spotify imo. Slskd means I can use my Android device away from home to download albums to my music collection and then stream them right back to the phone.

  • what to do with virtual machines?
  • Does docker count?

I have jellyfin, navidrome, slskd and others running in little docker virtual instances.

I tend to use qemu kvm's just for testing out novel operating systems, trying out package managers or just somewhere I can break stuff without worry.

Arcade Punks builds might be worth it...I just use them on an rpi.

    Weapons for Arcane Builds?

I was playing around with other builds for a few months but have come back to arcane, which is where I started.

Just curious about weapon preferences or suggestions for arcane builds.

I've played around with a few options but am currently rocking the Occult Giant Crusher & Reduvia dagger, Dragon Communion Seal and the ever present longbow.

Sharing media on Lemmy & FMHY, what is supported?

I can see images, which is nice.

Just curious if there is a note of what media can be uploaded and if this can vary by instance.

jpgs seems fine....but webm, gifs, mp3, mp4 etc I have no idea about. I couldn't see an obvious way to upload videos and instead of trying 644 different media combos as an image thought I'd ask.

Apologies if I've missed something obvious.
