open.substack.com So this is how the story ends

Listen now (25 min) | Hipkins rules out wealth tax for his time as PM after ditching plans in Budget for a revenue-neutral wealth tax on the top 0.5% to pay for a $20/week tax cut for bottom 99.5% because...just because.

So this is how the story ends

Absolutely great read from Bernard Hickey on Hipkins' wealth tax announcement and the treasury report released yesterday:

> That’s it. It will now be almost impossible for a wealth or capital gains tax to be implemented within the next decade or two.

> The future of Aotearoa’s political economy will now remain frozen in its stagnant, unequal, unjust, unproductive and unhealthy state for the forseeable future. That’s what our leaders, and ultimately the only voters that matter, have decided. Those hoping to change that frozen landscape should now look after themselves and their families, and/or hope and work for an electoral miracle that gives parties who want such taxes dominant positions in any post-election negotiation.

Instagram will shut down its companion app Threads by year end 2021
  • Legit I miss threads - it had a great feature where you could only get notified for messages, or only get notified for messages from close friends. It meant I could turn off notifications from the instagram app entirely and not miss important messages!

  • Have you done anything recently that you're proud of?
  • I’ve just built and launched a new site for my work! It’s something we’ve been trying to do for literally years and about a month ago I decided to just sit down and do it myself, and I’m so glad I did.

  • Snapshots of the End of Travel: On Trying to Enter a Personal No-Fly Zone
  • Thanks so much for sharing this - this was such a good, well-written read. I find personal narratives like this so useful - for me, they're a tangible reminder of the work we're needing to do, and I find them so motivating. I'm in Aotearoa, so any international travel basically necessates long haul flights, which is something I find it so hard to reconcile with my desire to travel - this has prompted some really useful reflection on my end.

  • Opposition parties accused of racism over health equity claims - RNZ
  • It's absolutely wild the mess opposition parties are drawing this into - the evidence is incredibly clear on the disparity faced by Māori and Pasifika in our healthcare system, and if there's one group I'd trust to make decisions around this it's clinicians and the people doing the work, rather than politicians in an election cycle.

  • Antiwork was forced to reopen by the reddit admins
  • Reddit is making some funny moves here that I reckon will backfire - forcing antiwork to reopen considering it's likely a community with strong feelings about strikes and action. They've also forced piracy to reopen, which I reckon might backfire on them too.

  • People who are gay, lesbian or bi have more mental health and substance use problems, survey finds | CNN
  • Likely because the research this piece is based on just looked at gay, lesbian, and bi folks - lots of research is restricted like this for a whole number of reasons. But yeah, no surprises here!

(Lots of good other research on trans health and wellbeing in particular, too, that shows the same thing)

  • Elevated Access - free transportation out of Gilead states for medical care
  • Absolutely - happy to help put one together if people want to reply to this comment with some suggested resources?

Alyaza, does lemmy have a wiki-like feature we can make a resource list on if the list gets very long? Or is it easier to just make a post and link to it?

  • kia ora koutou! welcome everyone 🐝
  • I made my own starter using buch from the supermarket! You just have to make sure it hasn't been pasteurised - if it's got bits in it, you're good.

I boiled some water, added sugar and a few teabags and let it sit until room temp, then put that and about 100ml of the store kombucha into a large wide topped jar until the scoby formed. Then you basically repeat in a larger vessel, adding the scoby and some of the starter, start tasting after 3-5 days til it gets to your desired sweet/sour level!

If you want to you can then put it into swing top bottles to carbonate, but I like it mildly fizzy straight from the initial fermentation. I picked up a cute pineapple shaped glass vessel from kmart with a tap and it's great!

For flavours, i just use flavoured tea! I always add one or two gumboot black tea bags along with them to make sure the scoby gets the nutrients it needs.

  • kia ora koutou! welcome everyone 🐝
  • Oh exciting!

I've recently got into making kombucha, too, which has been a lot of fun - family friendly and you can play around with using different teas. A favourite so far has been made with a pear and caramel black tea!

It works so well for me cos kombucha is quick turnaround, beer takes a few weeks, and wine a few months - so it helps with my impatience 😅

  • what's your go-to butter chicken recipe?
  • This is the recipe i follow, and it's a real winner: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a03U45jFxOI

    My tips:

    • marinate your chicken as long as you can
    • don't skimp on the cashews - they add so much to the texture and creaminess
    • blitzing it feels like a pain but is 10000% worth it!
    • if you can find Kashmiri chilli anywhere near you (Indian grocers will probably stock it) it's worth picking up a bag - it'll last ages and has the right sweet smoky flavour
  • kia ora koutou! welcome everyone 🐝
  • Oooh interesting! I'm not sure about brewing alcohol free, but it's something I'd be interesting in learning more about for sure!

I know with feijoa you can make soda real easy with the skins by just letting them sit in a bottle of sugar water - it'll naturally carbonate and will be very low/no alcohol!

I've found wine really simple to make - the formula of fruit, water, sugar, and yeast is pretty much always the same and it's very much a set it and leave it once it gets going! The waiting is the hardest part 😅

  • How are you dealing with all these new anti-trans/LGBTQ+ laws?
  • Aotearoa in general is pretty good - keep an eye on what happens here in the next six months ago. We're seeing the same rise in anti-trans disinformation that everywhere else is, unfortunately, and we have an election in October - some parties have already made gender an election issue.

I remain optimistic - I know the opposition is an absolutely tiny minority - and we're pretty good in terms of general inclusion and access to healthcare, but it'll be an interesting few months!

  • Multiple exposures on 6x7

I picked up a ligero67 this summer, a 3d printed body for Mamiya Press lenses and backs. Developed my first couple rolls recently and had a fair few accidental multiple exposures, but I liked this one!
