...what support? They barely reply any queries people post in their google groups. If you go there you'll see most people will try to reach them either due to servers down (the main issue at hand) or login issues which never get fixed (the longest standing issue, better create a different new subdomain) from what I've seen. I've also tried repeatedly to reach them regarding changing the token access, but with no luck. It's a free service so I can't complain, but the only support you actually will get is from other users, and for some scenarios that's not quite enough.
EDIT: Oh wow right after posting this I just saw they actually replied regarding the SSO/tokens issue most people have (SSO failed due to the reddit snafu, you end up with just the token and no chance to do any further changes to your account again). This has been an ongoing issue for over two years, I just saw they finally replied (I think for the first time) a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks. I'm seriously considering also a paid domain, so it's good to hear from your experience. I might go try some other free provider first though.
Does it matter?
No, it does not change, but why is this something of concern? The problem is duckdns DOES NOT REPLY providing DNS replies, not to my own servers, but to people outside looking for my servers by typing their address. Duck fails to provide a response to those queries, and users get timeouts. I can frequently replicate this with either dig or nslookup, from different machines, either inside my network or at random connections.
I managed today to run certbot to register 2 new subdomains that yesterday consistently failed with a long timeout during THE WHOLE DAY. Today the same certbot command on the same server ran straight at the first attempt.
So...yeah. Unreliable.
Great...thanks. I'm going to look them up.
Glad it works for you guys. Here it fails to respond at least once a week or so, and it can last one hour or more sometimes. It's unpredictable. And makes the server look buggy.
A sample for measure...there's a lot of these on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1cyru6p/duckdns_dns_servers_down/
It will fail to resolve randomly, and then your services goes down. And you expend quite a while figuring out whatever might have failed until the typical "when in doubt, it's DNS" pops up. This also applies when you're trying to add/renew subdomains.
Just a sample...
It seems to frequently stop responding.
Nginx...two domains, same sites?
Hi guys!
I'm considering moving away from duckdns, as it's becoming increasingly unreliable. I'd like to check some other free dynamic DNS alternatives (I'm open to suggestions!).
My idea would be to have the server run under two different domains, but both directing to the same services. Is this possible? What shoudl I change in nginx in order to answer to two different domains/names?
Thanks!
DuckDNS alternatives
Hi guys!
Just that...would you recommend any decent free Dynamic domain that is well regarded privacy-wise?
DuckDNS is becoming rather unreliable and prone to failure.
Thanks!
The end result is the same though. First phone unlock is the one a bad actor can't get through.
GrapheneOS is the easiest ROM install bar none. Get the en browser (needs to be chrome-based) to the install url, hook the phone cable, and let it run. It's super straightforward. It's not rooting though, you don't get root access by default.
GrapheneOS also has this. Not sure stock android includes it.
Is it any good?
You only need to see how young Tom Scott looks in the video to know this is indeed very old news. They seem to have necroposted this thing from 10 years ago and posted it now without any reference about when the events happened, to make it seem relevant/recent.
Extremely unlikely due to Kamal's actor rapey attitudes forcing his own on-screen death (and firing). I'm not complaining with the attempt at closing the main plots where they did, given the cards they were given. I'm happy they tried to give it a decent ending and closure.
I didn't find the final books so amazing compared to the rest of the series.
I think this is the compound mentioned: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Pater_Noster
I love this Adam Something classic where they keep optimizing the tech bro idea until it turns into Thomas the Engine
That's why I'm turning to zigbee... No need for privacy concerns when the device has no internet access by itself.
Thanks! But...where is the folder specified there? I can only see the temp client body path, but I'm not sure that's where files will be uploaded.
Well I used to turn off the monitors and leave it running...And the last month I started actively suspending it, and the bill went down. I'm waiting to setup some sockets with smart power measuring features, and I'll have more reliable data on power consumption...but I'm afraid I might need to wait a few days on these.
WebDAV server...sharing an existing folder?
Hi guys!
I'm trying to create a WebDAV server that shares a NFS mount from my NAS. In short, I'm trying to create/share a backup folder in my NAS so my Graphene phone can run the backup.
How can I do this? All the guides mention about sharing /var/www/webdav and chrooting it. How can I share my own folder? Does it need to be /var/www/webdav? Can I share something else instead? Should I just link my NAS mount to /var/www/webdav?
Thanks!
Lol...I didn´t consider that. What crypto can you mine that can give you at least some cents back? Sorry for the offtopic. Yeah I'm in the process of setting up some sockets with zigbee switches and power metering. I'll install the one for the desktop soon, and start measuring more accurately. Is there a way to know which GPU are you using at any given time?
Planning a (long) weekend in Taiwan...Any scooter nature routes?
Hi guys! I’m planning a 3-4 days weekend trip to Taiwan in early December. I haven’t booked a flight yet, so I can land in any other airport that isn’t Taipei, if the location is better. I’d like some more natural/countryside routes to do on a scooter if possible…not sure if away from the crowds is a possibility. My initial idea earlier this year was Taroko mountain/gorge…but yeah, I guess it won’t be in very good condition just yet. I saw that many parts aren’t planned to reopen anytime soon. What would be any good alternatives?
Thanks a lot!
Power off discrete GPU while not in use?
Hi guys!
I purchased a few months ago a new AMD PC, with a 7700 CPU, 32GB of RAM and a 7800XT GPU. I've noticed since, that my electric bill has been increased (compared to when I used an Intel i7 6700 with a 1070 GPU), I was wondering, is it possible to use a hybrid GPU setup kinda like laptops, where the iGPU from the CPU is activated for normal tasks, and the discrete GPU is only activated on demand? Would the GPU be unpowered/sleeping in the meantime?
....all this from a Linux perspective, I'm running Nobara 40.
Thanks!

Me and some friends needed to buy at around the same time, so we ended up buying the Wonderboom ones. The fact that you could sync them together and have stereo speakers placed at different locations gave them quite the trick at parties, BBQs etc.
Looking for zigbee smart plugs with monitoring
Hi guys! I'm looking to monitor/control the power consumption of some old window-hanging aircon units, that don't really mind when the power is literally cut from the wall. I'd like to be able to see how much power they consume, and also being able to turn them on and off at the socket (the IR doesn't work all that well to begin with). I was checking about the Tapo P110M, but seems these are not sharing the power consumption offline, you need to register them in the app and they only do it through a Tapo account.
What alternatives do I have?
Important, I guess: As I live off an ex-UK colony here, we do have UK-like three pronged sockets, that's the form factor (Type G, I think?) I'd be needing.
Firefox for Android (Beta, Fennec, Mull) - How to enable translation?
So... Yeah. Just that. How can i enable Firefox translation in Android? I'd like to be able to use the offline translation feature.
Thanks!
I can't disable the right click menu from Firefox - dom.event.contextmenu.enabled
Hi guys! I'm trying to disable Firefox' menu that shows when you right click. Sometimes, depending on context (ie, right click on a youtube video) you might get a webpage menu. But Firefox places their right click menu on top of the web's menu, blocking everything. I want to disable this, so the website/extension takes precedence, and the menu doesn't show in this case.
I see on some pages the option should be:
dom.event.contextmenu.enabled
, which should be set to TRUE
in order to let webs or apps take precedence. It is already set to true, and yet FF keeps placing their menu on top of the website's. What else can I check?
EDIT: Just in case, there seems to be also an services.sync.prefs.sync.dom.event.contextmenu.enabled
, which might be synced from my mozilla account? Not sure how this one should be set.
Firefox on Nobara (Fedora) only shows as v121
Hi guys! Just...this. Whenever I search for firefox on the software installation app, or via dnf, I can see the only available version is v121...or I can update via flatpak to a newer one. How come the repo version is so old? How can I get the v130 officially?
Thanks!
Considering a mirrorless...Nikon compatibility?
Hi guys! I'm just a newbie in a way, that some years ago inherited a Nikon DX D7100 with a rather good Nikkor zoom 18-200mm VR (I understand it's the first one, as they might have re-released it at later stages). I played with it for quite a while and took some really good pictures, but at this point it's rather cumbersome to pack in the luggage, together with the drone as well. I'm considering a smaller mirrorless camera perhaps, so I can have something easier to carry around during a hike/tour/scooter ride. However, I would like to keep the portability with the zoom to some degree, as I really love how easily it made to frame subjects and get really good pics. Would you guys have recommendations for cameras (Nikon or not-Nikon), that can fit a Nikon lens with/without some adapter? Just in case this is a DX lens, not full frame, AFAIK (but I wouldn't mind some...vignetting, or digitally/automatically cropping the picture after the fact, if needed).
Nginx in LXC/Proxmox...how to Fail2ban?
Hi guys!
Back in the day I used to have a VM holding nginx and all the crap exposed...and I did set it up with fail2ban. I moved away from it, as the OS upgrade was turning messy, and rebuilt onto an LXC container. How should I use fail2ban/iptables in order to protect/harden my LXC container/server? Do the same conditions apply, or will I have any limitations/issues due to the container itself?
Thanks!
ProtonUp-Qt...won't offer Wine-GE updates...only on Lutris??
So...I'm trying to get Proton 9.13, as I've just read it might be able to run The Casting of Frank Stone without crashes. And...I CAN SEE IT. When I choose Steam on ProtonUp-QT. Or when I choose Bottles. But when I choose Lutris, then add version...the latest GE-Proton it shows me is 8-26. Nothing newer than that. What gives? Why?
Jellystat...guide or instructions?
Hi! I'm currently looking onto perhaps running Jellystat. But the instructions seem to be a bit...lacking? Is there a step by step guide on how to get it up and running?
Thanks!
Any idea on what's the drone situation in Vietnam?
Hi...Considering to bring an old Mavic for a trip to Vietnam soon. But seems you might need to submit every planned flight route 2 weeks in advance? Is this for real? What's the situation on the ground?
Anyone trying the Sypee NanoKVM?
Hi guys!
When I saw this tiny little guy, I had to go in and get it. And so I received it today. My first experience is...the software is a bit rough at the moment. And now I'm having trouble with the keyboard detection. It's no longer working, and I"m not sure what's wrong. Basically, it worked initially, but after I unplugged it to dump some isos onto it*, the USB keyboard emulation seems to no longer work.
And since I'm one of the very first users...I think have no documentation (yay). I see there's a Chinese forum where more people mention a USB keyboard issue, but I don't think this is sorted.
Anyone else tried it? How's your experiences so far? Any ideas how to fix the keyboard issues? Still, for all its initial wonkiness, I clearly see this as the future for a KVM device, instead of a full blown Raspberry Pi board, which I think is a bit overkill.
*: The 'full' version comes with an embedded 32GB microSD, of which 8GB is for the OS, but the remainder is a separate partition for ISOs...you connect it as a USB storage to a PC and drop your ISOs there. At the moment you don't seem to be able to mount a random file from your PC via the browser UI. Only ISO files it already has in its own storage.
Best way of playing Wipeout these days?
So...after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch...I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series...was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?
Thanks!
Proton Calendar to...Android calendar? Via caldav, perhaps?
Hi guys! So, I have Proton Mail, and this also gives me the Calendar. I love that I have a encrypted private calendar, but it bothers me that it doesn’t play well with any other app, as it’s not officially a “calendar” to Android. This bothers me, because I use GrapheneOS, with mostly no Google services, and I'd like my Gadgetbridge-connected smartwatch to be able to display calendar events, since they're not being shared with anyone else. But I can't, because Proton Calendar isn't really an Android Calendar. There’s a way in Proton to permanently share a link to your private calendar. In effect, it’s an up-to-date .ics file, that I believe needs to be checked/downloaded every time there’s an update. Is there a way to update this in Proton? Alternatively, I wouldn’t mind creating some caldav system that imported this, but not sure if there’s already any guide for it?
Thanks so much!
Going from Stereo to...4.0?
Hi guys! So for quite a bunch of years, my main home cinema setup has been a Pioneer amp VSX-823K, paired with a couple of Mission MX2 speakers...and a 55inch Sony TV. No subwoofer, no central channel either. Nothing too special, but since the room I watch from is rather small, it does the job pretty well. This is my home cinema/gaming station, and it's all hooked to a gaming PC.
So, I'm considering to add maybe a couple of tiny rear speakers to provide surround sound (ish? 4.0, I guess). Now the problem is, I literally have no space. I have an L-shaped Ikea sofa that takes one corner completely, and leaves not much space at all on the other. I was thinking maybe tiny satellites hanging from a pole that goes straight into the edge of the corner, behind the sofa's corner...So something small anyway, as they'd be rather close to the head/ears of the viewers (me/parner's/friends). I'm not sure what to look for...I'm looking for something small that can deliver decent sound quality without having to be too loud. What would be your advice?
Thanks!
Immich keeps restarting the backup
Hi guys! I'm having my first attempt at Immich (...and docker, since I'm at it). So I have successfully set it up (I think), and connected the phone and it started uploading. I have enabled foreground and background backup, and I have only chosen the camera album from my Pixel/GrapheneOS phone. Thing is, after a while (when the screen turns off for a while, even though the app is unrestricted in Android/GrapheneOS, or whenever changing apps...or whenever it feels like), the backup seems to start again from scratch, uploading again and again the first videos from the album (the latest ones, from a couple of days ago), and going its way until somewhere in December 2023...which is where at some point decides to go back and re-do May 2024. It's been doing this a bunch of times. I've seen mentioned a bunch of times that I should set client_max_body_size on nginx to something large like 5000MB. However in my case it's set to 0, which should read as unrestricted. It doesn't skip large videos of several hundreds megs, it does seem to go through the upload process...but then it keeps redoing them after a while.
Any idea what might be failing? Why does it keep restarting the backup? By the way, I took a screenshot of the backup a couple days ago, and both the backed up asset number and the remainder has kept the same since (total 2658, backup 179, remainder 2479). This is a couple of days now going through what I'd think is the same files over and over?
SOLVED: So it was about adding the client_max_body_size
value to my nginx server. I thought I did, so I was ignoring this even though I saw it mentioned multiple times. Mine is set to value 0, not 50000M as suggested on other threads, but I thought it should work. But then again, it was in the wrong section, applying to a different service/container, not Immich. Adding it to Immich too (with 0, in my case, which should set it to "unlimited") worked immediately after restarting nginx service. Thanks everyone for all the follow ups and suggestions!
