Raspberry Pi becomes a public company
  • I have a dell wyse 5070 with a j4105 cpu that runs home assistant with frigate and z2m around 3-5W with a bluetooth and zigbee stick attached. If more processing is needed it will boost to 15w for example during docker container updates, but it will also perform much better in these situations than the PI does. It costed me ~85€ from a refurbish shop and even had 1 year warranty. It came with 4gb ram, 128gb ssd, power supply and case ofc. It was a no brainer at the time when just the PI4 alone was like 80€ for 4 gb ram version if you could find it in stock. And that didn't include case, power supply or sd card.

  • Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices
  • What is more conveniant about sms compared to other apps? You still have to open the app, choose the contact from the list and start typing. It's the exact same options. If I do it on the sms app, signal app, telegram or messanger app it's still the same 2 taps then start typing. The only difference is what's on the other side. If they only use sms then it's obvious you have no other choice of communicating with them, but you can't say it's more conveniant.

  • Meta to use Instagram and Facebook posts from as far back as 2007 to train artificial intelligence tools
  • You've listed some kinda vague concepts, family and friendship may be free, but their help and attention costs money and time. As for sunshine, that costs energy, atoms are fused into other atoms to produce the light, so while we aren't paying it, it is getting "spent". Peace is furthest away from free, just look at how much the wars to restore peace cost

  • The Google Pay app is dead
  • Exactly. At the end of the day, naming is not that relevant as long as it conveys the message of what the app does. It only gets confusing when you have a bunch of apps doing the same thing

  • Unfortunately, no matter how good the alternatives are, you are stuck with whatever is on the other end. I can't force anyone to change their main app for comms. Even if I do manage to get them to install anything else, they will realise they only use it with me and probably drop it next time they change their phone.

While I do agree whatsapp is a privacy nightmare , I also see why it won't go away anytime soon. You only need someone's phone number to contact them, you get easy media transfers although compressed to shit, it's still serviceable and it's carier independant, and most importantly free even internationaly. People even started using it for audio calls due to higher quality audio over the plain voice calls. All these reasons create the perfect mix for the average privacy-ignorant person to overlook any competitors.

  • Who even uses sms/mms these days? The only cases I see myself using sms is the poorly implemented 2fa over sms, which is bad since sim hijack is a real threat.

Other than that whatsapp is the norm around here, whether we like it or not. Some also use facebook messanger, but no1 uses mms, it never picked up with the astronomical prices that carriers kept around for no good reason. I wish more people used telegram or signal, but 99% of my contacts don't, so whatsapp it is.

  • Removal of piracy communities
  • And this is why lemmy will never get close to what reddit was. On top of the cumbersome registration process and difficulty of navigating the fediverse for the non-tech people, there is also the issue of de-federation and censorship. This is no better then reddit unfortunately. It makes me sad, this really seemed like a good idea, but the implementation is so poor.

People were saying it won't matter what instance you choose, everything is federated and you choose what you want to see, but clearly the instance admins make that choice for you and it absolutely does matter the instance you choose.

  • Payment on delivery is still very much a thing here. Literally all food delivery allows it.

The majority of online retailers allow it too, though some of them charge the equivalent of ~1€ if you do choose it.

I prefere using it when I don't know much about the store or if I know the store is too big to care about their customers and I had orders being delayed by them in the past. It's in their best interest to deliver it asap if they didn't get the money yet.

Also, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to deal with goods damaged during shipping, if the box is damaged you just refuse it and don't have to wait x amount of days to get the money back into your account.

  • Well, technically you could pay cash on delivery, at least for physical goods. But card payments are just conveniant.

The only thing better imo, is nfc payment with phone just because fingerprint scan lets me pay without a pin and without compomising on security, so it's a tiny bit faster and more conveniant with no drawbacks.

For small amounts amounts either card or phone is fine.

I only carry cash as backup

  • USB tunneling
  • What about the back of your tv? Or friend's PC? Or library computer? Or phone charger? Or... Any other Universal device using the Universal Serial Bus...

You may learn YOUR devices, but you may also have to interact with other devices at times and USB didn't make it easy in the past.

Now, type C is a thing and it helps with plugging it in right the first time, but that one has the HUGE issue with allowing any protocol since USB 1.0 and everyrhing else is optional. So even though you can plug a type C monitor into a type C microphone, nothing will happen, so it's not stupid proof anymore.
