What very old/unmaintained software do you still use today, and why?
  • I use the venerable lynx text browser [1] every day. It emerged slightly after the release of html and the web in the early to mid 90's.

  • What's a true fact that is so misleading it's borderline misinformation?
  • I would assume if you needed to be hospitalized for any reason there is already a significant increase in the possibility of mortality...

  • In the editor menu bar the next to the last symbol is a triangle with an exclamation point in it. This marks part of your post as a spoiler:

  • Daggers vs darts vs bolts for a rogue
  • Yeah, GoP instantly take you to maximum strength (25) and do an additional +6 damage for everything wielded or thrown. No (positive) effects on launched projectiles in Vanilla though. Definitely worth burning a wish on as a Rogue...

  • Your worst and most preventable DYWYPI?
  • Ah, sounds like another average day in the salt mines... =)

  • Daggers vs darts vs bolts for a rogue
  • If I had to choose, I would go with darts. No messing around with a launcher. This could be useful since many rogues tend to "devolve" into a two-weapon fighter in the later game. Also, darts will receive a significant boost from Gauntlets of Power, as will the rest of the rogue offensive game. But crossbow? None...

  • Your worst and most preventable DYWYPI?
  • I used to play a lot of healers. Their starting stone to flesh spell is quite dangerous if used on a boulder to make a huge chunk of meat. You will be over-satiated for hundreds, if not thousands of turns. One moment of forgetfulness and DYWYPI...

  • Is the War in Ukraine a Global War?
  • I don't think there would be any invasion of Russia. Rather, NATO air power could systematically destroy every piece of Russian rolling stock inside Ukraine. Anything with wheels, treads or that runs on rails. And perhaps also every Russian stockpile of munitions or supplies inside Ukraine. Never any need to enter Russian territory...

  • Every game is potentially a learning experience. A painful learning experience...

  • Is this retro enough?

Back in the early 90's while scrolling through the USENET with pine, I stumbled on an odd post. Apparently someone had created what they called a hyper-text markup language to be used on something else named the world wide web using a dedicated browser. I was interested but also dubious. Didn't we already have the recently released gopher that did that? Why bother? This is hard proof of my prescient powers...

Is the War in Ukraine a Global War?
  • The major problem is that there is an individual in power in Russia who can neither admit mistakes nor accept defeat. If this individual cannot somehow be removed from power, peacefully or otherwise, then the future is dark. The destruction of the Ukrainian dam is but prelude. It is almost certain the Ukrainian power reactor is wired for detonation as well. The tactical nuclear missiles in Belarus are not just there for bluster or show. They are undoubtedly targeted on scores of major Ukrainian population centers. Keep your fingers crossed...

  • New nethack community.

  • So, what constitutes a rogue-like?
  • This discussion has forced me to ponder my own preferences and prejudices in the genre. This is strictly a personal list. Feel free to ignore it.

    1. Terminal based
    2. ASCII interface available if not default
    3. Turn based play
    4. Still under active development (perhaps open source)
    5. Complexity (you encounter something new every game, forever)
    6. Difficult but not impossible for mere mortals (can include permadeath)

    YMMV

  • So, what constitutes a rogue-like?
  • There will be no fighting from me. My primary focus is NetHack, which btw didn't score 100% on the metric either. Rather than rogue-like, perhaps I should have opted for "significantly similar to NetHack", which is my own standard...

  • So, what constitutes a rogue-like?
  • Well, it's a fairly old standard but a place to start. I needed some sort of reference. And for me, the turn based makes more sense if you are dealing with a constantly looming permadeath...

  • New nethack community.
  • There. A slight adjustment to the display name...

  • New nethack community.
  • Welcome. Not exactly a hub of activity but it's early. And I'm of the opinion that other rogue-likes are certainly on-topic here as well. The more the merrier...

  • What do you tend to play and why?
  • Valkyrie, especially dwarf, is considered one of the more straightforward choices. Perhaps more familiar for those coming from a heavy hack-n-slash melee background. Barbarian, especially orc, is similar if a bit darker...

  • Welcome to NetHack et al.
  • That isn't my intent. I spent some time on the subreddit several years ago but I eventually drifted away. But with all the current reddit news, much like the twitter news last year, I decided to see if there was a nethack community on lemmy. Couldn't find one. Thought about it a few days and finally said, "Sure, why not?" Hopefully this isn't going to be me providing a monologue, though. I just wanted a place to talk about the game, preferably with others...
