Underrated feature in games: Fake desktops/PDAs.
  • One of my favorite gaming tropes! Part of me wishes it was more common, but then a different part remembers that the novelty would wear off.

Hypnospace Outlaw! The whole game is basically just being a mod of an alternate universe Geocities.

Then there's Kingsway; it's a Rougelite RPG where everything is controlled with a Windows 9x/Mac Classic parody.

  • Big Amazon cloud services recovering after outage hits thousands of users
  • What was extra annoying about was even though the applications I work on are already multi-region; we still had a couple of transitive dependencies on us-east-1 that held things up a bit. And of course, their status page never said anything about the outage.

  • Discord Should Get Rid of Usernames
  • They auto reserved each username based on account age and how long you've been subbed to Nitro as a tie breaker; but that info was buried pretty deep in like one of the announcments. With special exceptions for ""influencers"".

  • Redditors, how do you like Lemmy?
  • I like pretty well. I've been on reddit for over a decade now, and the UI on Lemmy is kinda like a combination of the good parts of old and new reddit to me.

People here are nice (maybe that's because my home instance is Beehaw...); and I like the small community.

  • I miss r/tumblr. Sometimes I can still hear their voice.
  • Lol, same. I look forward to more screenshots; there's some great stuff there that needs a wider audience.

I never really participated in the reddit Tumblr communites beyond seeing the occasional post on /r/popular

  • Why are you posting about Reddit so much and not just enjoy the Fediverse?
  • This is part of why Voat (pre fatpeoplehate ban turning it into a right wing shit hole) was a ghosttown. The majority of the active communities there were just complaining about different aspects of reddit instead of trying to share and discuss content.

  • Any recommendations for low-end, Linux-friendly games to play?
  • Stardew Valley is really lightweight and Linux native.

Since you mentioned battery being an issue and that you just switched to Linux, have you looked into using TLP or Powertop to try doing some tweaks to squeeze out a bit more? It's been years since I've used Linux on a laptop, but that's what I used.

  • Seconding OpenMW! Don't let the upcoming release being unfinished dissuade you from playing! I played through the whole game back in 2015 with OpenMW on a crappy laptop with about as many bugs as is normal for a Bethesda game.

The did great work to get it to that point back then, and I'm sure it's even better now.

  • Something I WONT miss from Reddit/other social medias
  • Reddit has always been full of teenagers. But it's gotten "worse" over the past few years. Or maybe I (we've?) just gotten older. I don't remember reddit being like this 10 years ago; but I was 10 years younger, and a teen too.
