Retail spending slump nearly surpassing '80s sharemarket crash
  • Things such as changing the sick leave rules would help ease the pressure on businesses, or simplifying the Holidays Act.

"While the government doesn't have any money they have other levers they can use to remove red tape."

Sounds like Retail NZ wants them to erode worker rights and protections as well, I’m sure those retail workers will appreciate that.

  • Government wants to 'flood the market' to make houses more affordable - how will that work?
  • I’m all for housing intensification in cities and flooding the market, but for the love of god can they please invest in improving public and alternative transport infrastructure? I already hate returning to visit Auckland due to how bad the traffic is

  • Retail spending slump nearly surpassing '80s sharemarket crash
  • I mean what do they expect? Literally everything is going up in price, Mortgage rates, insurance, power, food, internet etc. Unless you’re already well off I can imagine a lot of people are just paying to survive right now, let alone having money for discretionary spending. Not to mention we’re supposed to save and invest for our futures as well..

  • Thanks Dave, interesting stats!

As much as I’d love a diynz and Hamilton community here, I don’t think we have enough regular posters sadly. Sorry to say I’m also guilty of not contributing much lately

  • I was thinking it could be used for cooking since it's mainly oil, but I'm thinking the amount of sugar might not work well. I've seen people use it on the outside of grilled cheese sandwiches to crisp it up. Otherwise into the compost it goes!

  • Highly recommend no one buys Woolworths Essential’s brand Mayonnaise. Absolutely disgusting, looked like glue and also super sweet. I realised after the fact it’s vegan, so no eggs.. Mayo with no eggs! Even my Mayo/Aioli loving kid thought it was gross.

Not sure what to do with the jar of it now, feels wasteful to throw it away though 🤮

  • Happy birthday! Lemmy.nz turns 1!
  • 1 year really goes by fast, thanks Dave for keeping it going!

I also enjoyed the effort we put in on the pixel canvas thing, I think we punched above our weight for the size of our userbase

  • I'm not sure how to explain it, it's a power connector (I believe) on the inside of an oscillating fan but not the part that gets plugged in to the outisde. It's the 4 pin header type of plug if you know what I mean. So it stays plugged in all the time. Sorry I don't know all the terminology, I'm still trying to learn!

  • >On March 18, 2022, scientists at the Concordia research station in the east Antarctic recorded the largest spike in temperature ever recorded with the region experiencing a rise of 38.5C above its seasonal average.

    >Unfortunately, it's not an isolated event with an increasing number of meteorologic anomalies being reported on the continent in the past two years.

The sea level rise map that was linked is interesting, I propose Hamilton to be the new international airport since both Auckland and Wellington's will be underwater

Anyone watching Beacon 23? Is it worth starting?

I see it's based on the book by Hugh Howey, who also did the Silo series which I really enjoyed the TV adaptation of. I'm wondering if it's any good as I don't have a lot of time for starting too many TV shows at the moment.

City to be mothballed as budget cuts hit the bone

Jokes about Hamilton aside, this kind of sucks.

As someone who lives here it's sad to see and I'll get to pay for it through rates rises too!

I'm curious to know what others think of this.

I'm personally for keeping it as I see the benefit coming in a few years having many more EV's available in the second hand market. Currently it's pretty much dominated by mainly Nissan Leaf's at the lower end of the secondhand market.

I know of a few people as well who have bought EV/Hybrids recently that would not have even considered going for EV's or even hybrids without the rebate.
