Pelicans Game 1
Expert recap and game analysis of the New Orleans Pelicans vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA game from October 25, 2023 on ESPN.
They were playing a team without two of its starters, and there were still way too many turnovers, but CJ looked great, BI looked unstoppable, and Zion got 23 points despite a bit of a slow start. And Matt Ryan looks like the off-the-bench 3-point threat we needed (though Jordan Hawkins will probably take over that role and more sooner or later).
All in all, a promising win that shows a good base to build on, and a lot of room for growth.

Another awful preseason game
The passes were lazy, the defense was atrocious, and Naji Marshall got injured.
There were a few bright spots. Jordan Hawkins looked great from 3, and EJ Liddell looked good as well, but the game was not nearly as close as the final score might indicate.
He looks real good when he has the ball and a head of steam downhill, but it just seems like everyone’s a little out of sync, so no one is really showing their full potential. I mean, 20 turnovers in the first half?? It’s hard to really judge anything when you’re dealing with stats like that. Let’s see what happens against the Hawks today. Hopefully they don’t look as godawful as last game and that we can actually get a good read on how the boys are doing.
Pelicans preseason game 2
Turnovers were costly as New Orleans dropped a preseason matchup against its Southwest Division counterpart in Birmingham.
The Pels looked as dead as this Lemmy community.
Preseason game 1 thread
First preseason game against the Magic happening now at the blender. Hard to get a read on everything after just a few minutes, but everyone is looking pretty spry.
Trey Murphy out 10–12 weeks with meniscus tear
Pelicans guard Trey Murphy III had successful surgery on the meniscus in his left knee and is expected to return to basketball activities in approximately 10 to 12 weeks, the team said.
Joel Meyers called tonight's Saints game
It was nice to hear Joelvenile announcing the Saints game. He’s such a good announcer: always calm, , astute analysis, asks good questions to the color commentator, etc. etc.
Can’t wait for him and AD to get back to what they do best.
Two of them were made after this article came out (he mentions four movies being made. Star Trek IV came out in 1986, TNG premiered in 1987). So Star Trek V 😬 and Star Trek VI 👍 were yet to be made.
That one actually isn’t a mistake. His last name was spelled “Ryker” when they were developing the show.

Zndl points out correctly that the trick is to not update the watch past watchOS 8. I would hope the watch series 7 would still ship with watchOS 8.
The most recent watch that maxes out at watchOS 8 is the series 3 but that one is pretty underpowered, so I’d have a hard time recommending it.
Looks like you’re right. For the fine print to be right, Apple Watch Series 7 would have to ship with watchOS 8. Do you think they’re still shipping like that? What a weird dilemma.
It looks like anything from Series 7 down will work with your wife's SE with iOS 15.
The small print from the Apple Watch Series 7:
Apple Watch Series 7 requires an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 15 or later.
iPhone SE was released after the iPhone 6s and can take iOS 15 so you should be good
I totally understand your desire for a community that allows you to discuss classic trek without worrying that your enjoyment of new series will be lessened if you read spoilers. Reddit has a big enough user base to have separate subreddits for each series. Lemmy’s not there yet.
think there is a way to make any forum spoiler-avoidable, especially where very current episodes are at play. Sensible titles (e.g., including the episode discussed) would go a long way toward helping with this.
Lemmy also ostensibly supports spoiler tags
spoilers within
But not every client supports them. Hopefully as clients improve, support will be universal.
Getting people to use those where appropriate might also help.
I look forward to seeing how this and other trek communities develop, and I hope that your experience improves.
“The Agreement was reached orally, and no loan documentation was prepared or signed by any of the parties at that time," the lawsuit said.
Just a friendly reminder to always get it in writing, especially if it’s, you know, $2 million.
I’m with you on your analysis. It wasn’t mindblowingly good, but it was certainly good enough to not feel like a band past its prime trying to cash in on one last payday. I do think that Billy West (Fry)‘s voice has aged some as well, but I got used to it after a minute or two and it was fine.
I think when you’re coming back from cancelation…AGAIN, and especially after so long, it’s not like a pilot, but it requires more exposition than a regular season opener. So it was good enough on its own merit, and I’m grading it on a curve as it’s the first episode in a decade and has to do a bit more storytelling drudgery than your average show.
Hydration is important! Other crew members should take note. (Surely the consoles are waterproof.)
Betting odds
DraftKings has the over/under on wins at 43.5, that’s two wins lower than last year’s prediction, and a game and a half higher than our record last season.
Thoughts?
I'm not letting myself have too good a feeling this offseason. I had a good feeling last offseason and look where that got me! I will keep an even keel until the Pels show me what to think of them when the regular season starts.
The offseason doldrums
I’m hungry for Pels news, but we’re at a really quiet part of the off-season. With the draft done and Summer League over, there’s a real dearth of new information about the Pels’ upcoming season.
What do y’all focus on during this fallow period?
There were times when Jaxson was playing poorly and JV was totally gassed where I couldn’t understand why Willie Green didn’t put him in. He’s not a world-beater, but I thought there were specific spots where him not eating up a minute or two didn’t makes sense to me.
Willy Hernangomez signs with Barcelona
Hernangomez has spent the past seven years in the NBA.
I hope he tears it up over there.
Staying on the court, staying with the team, staying out of trouble. That's what I want.
Zion's saying the right things
Zion Williamson says there's more he can do to stay on the court for the Pelicans.
Zion's saying all the right things. I really hope he follows through on everything he's talking about here.
Yeah, I think all the moves were expected and solid. I know some people have said letting Hayes walk is a big mistake. He’s got a high upside, but it just didn’t seem to be coming together for him in New Orleans.
I think I agree with all of these takes. I doubt the Pels will bring G.T. back as a player, though. He’s said he thinks he has some ball left in him and maybe he can find a team that would offer him a couple minutes in the rotation per game? I don’t hold out a lot of hope for that either, so I guess there’s a chance he and the Pels agree to a vet minimum deal, but if they want to try to get under the cap, paying $2.8 million for a guy who never sees the floor seems hard to justify.
What do you think of the Pels' offseason moves so far?
The moves so far have been:
- letting Jaxson walk
- waiving G.T.
- extending Herb
- signing E.J. Liddell
- signing Cody Zeller
- drafting Jordan Hawkins
Oh, and I guess they extended David Griffin's contract as well.
Let me know if I missed anything, and let me know what y'all think of the moves.
Edit: forgot to add letting Willy walk Edit 2: also failed to mention letting Josh Richardson go
Yeah there was a lot of really pointless arguing in the comments. It got a bit obnoxious.
I’m so used to lurking in the Reddit community that it’ll take some getting used to to start actually posting. I’ll try to step up though.
Because I’m in the Mac ecosystem, I use NetNewsWire on my devices and sync with iCloud. Before that, I used Feedly to sync. Feedly also has a web interface. I’m not sure what the best RSS apps are for Windows and Android are, though.
Here’s an article Wired did on feed readers last year. Many of them are subscription services, but some are freemium. (NetNewsWire is totally free).
