Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?
  • Yeah this is where I’m at. Not part of my casual reading. Just part of my internet search if I’m after something specific. Basically just a database now.

TBH that’s Facebook for me as well. Just go there occasionally for very specific reasons. But not to spend time. Which is a shame, as I have a lot of good friends there. But Meta had to go and fuck that place up as well.

  • What are you reading this week? [7/16/23]
  • I’ve never read any Banks. How would you compare him to Alastair Reynolds? I’m a HUGE Reynolds fan, especially stuff like House of Suns and Pushing Ice.

I’m looking for some new epic space opera to read :)

  • Which famous person do you think gets an unfair bad reputation?
  • I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but many politicians. I think a large fraction are genuinely trying their best to make a difference (according to their values) and get constantly hit from all sides with any flaws/mistakes being amplified beyond reason.

There are also ones who should be locked up. But in general, this is a job I’d never want to have or put up with.

  • New research puts age of universe at 26.7 billion years, nearly twice as old as previously believed
  • Yes this is the correct response. The standard model is the standard model because it’s stood the test of decades of challenges. One paper does not topple this.

EDIT: also note, the early galaxy formation challenges are interesting but don’t require a revision of the cosmological model. The data is new and many of these results will be revised into the “less spectacular” bin (this is already happening).
