How does car insurance on multiple vehicles work (USA)
  • Each car needs a separate policy, but if you get all your policies through one company they are likely to throw a discount at you for multiple cars. OTOH, it also means if you get in an accident or get a pile of tickets your rates will probably go up on all of them. And, of course, you probably don't need collision on a shitbox car that's paid off.

It may also make a difference what you use them for. They may give you a lower rate if they know it is not used daily. I know someone with an old 60's-era Mustang, he has it on a special policy that is much cheaper because it's for classic cars only. But there is a limit to how much he can drive it in a year before his rates go up. It's basically for old cars that you only drive to car shows or just to show off, and keep off the road entirely in the winter.

  • if the total fertility rate drops and stays below global replacement rate, will humans disappear?
  • So, as long as some humans are successfully making new humans, whether or not the rate is exactly 2.3 is irrelevant. World population has been skyrocketing for the past 100 years. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for that to backslide a bit. It can probably go down 5x and we'd still feel like the place is crowded.

The only thing to worry about is some widespread event that affects fertility workdwide. Like what if these micro plastics are really getting into our testicles and reducing sperm counts? They are getting everywhere. If men everywhere started shooting mostly blanks then we would all be in a panic.

  • Moms, if you were struggling with your child in public and a man offered to help, would you let him and why?
  • Well, if the choice is between being perceived as a creep vs watching the kid get hurt, I'll pick the option that doesn't end with an injured kid. But if the kid is just wandering and not in danger, like I said, there's no reason to intervene, for just the reason you listed.

  • Aniston criticises 'childless cat ladies' comment
  • It all comes down to a lack of empathy. These people made their own life choices that worked out for them personally, but can't get their head around the notion that other people can make different life choices (or have the choice made for them due to circumstances beyond their control).

It's like they perceive only one path to happiness - the path they took - and look with disdain on anyone who is doing it differently.

I'm sure Vance read Aniston's story and was secretly thinking to himself "Hah! That's what you get when you promote your career over your family", while booking several campaign trips which will take him away from his kids for weeks at a time.

  • You obviously missed the part where the SCOTUS declared that former Presidents (and Founding Fathers) have had the right to molest the flag all along. Ben Franklin called it the Writ of Flageus Gropus. He may have been drunk at the time, though, and confused the barmaid for a flag.

  • Moms, if you were struggling with your child in public and a man offered to help, would you let him and why?
  • Oh, if I'm asked, it's a different story. It means the mom needs the help and does not mind it. But it's a sad fact that too many people (particularly in the US) are paranoid and their mind immediately goes to the worst possible scenario in a new situation. So if I offer without any context whatsoever, they will think I'm some sort of weirdo.

I've been given the stink eye before while at a playground -- while watching my kids. Hey, Karen, sometimes dads help out with the kids, too!

  • Moms, if you were struggling with your child in public and a man offered to help, would you let him and why?
  • Dad here. I simply don't offer if it involves their kids, it is far too likely to be misconstrued. Plus, that mom is probably doing all she can to keep it together, and knowing that someone noticed could put her in a worse place mentally. If I'm out with my wife, she has offered out help before, and that is much less likely to be judged. It's just a fact.

(I will offer to do things like take the shopping cart back, but I would do that regardless of whether they have kids with them or not.)

I have sometimes seen little kids wander off while their mom wasn't looking. I do pay attention to where they go, and try to keep them in sight. Sometimes it might have only looked like they were wandering, only to find they were going toward another trusted adult. But other times you can see that moment of panic on the mom's face when they realize what happened. It's enough to be able to point and say "they went that way" and they can go get the kid themselves.

I won't interfere unless the kid is going into a dangerous situation, like a street or into water. Even then, I won't touch the kid unless it's the last possible thing to do to keep them safe, I am more likely to get in their way and ask them where their parents are.

  • Well, that and he knew that he could grift lots and lots of money from people as long as it was for a "campaign". Plus, if he claims that everything anyone ever does is "election interference", then it becomes easier to justify using campaign funds for everything.

  • New York’s Democratic Party shows new interest in electing Democrats
  • In fairness, Democrats got totally fucked by the redistricting done by the Special Master for the 2022 Congress. That guy might have given the Republicans their majority all on his own. They ended up having to redo the map for 2024. The tweaks are very minor, but look to be a lot fairer this time around.

The phrase “TRUMP TOO SMALL” stems from a memorable moment in the 2016 Republican presidential debates, during which Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., made a crude joke about the size of Trump’s hands.

“And you know what they say about guys with small hands,” Rubio quipped.

Biden’s campaign proposed that the first debate between the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees be held in late June and the second in September before early voting begins. Trump responded to the letter in an interview with Fox News digital, calling the proposed dates “fully acceptable to me” and joked about providing his own transportation.

    Clueless Tourist and Parking

Hi all! I'll be visiting with my family soon. I go to San Jose/Santa Clara often for work, but this will be my first time in the area as a tourist in 20 years. Were have 3 days planned for San Francisco on the trip, from a hotel near SFO. We have a rental car, and are 5 people, so it may make sense to drive. The hotel isn't walkable to BART or Caltrain, so if we were going to take those into the city we'd have to park at the station anyway. (South San Francisco would probably be the closest station).

I'm planning to park the car for the day and take the MUNI most places, since it's free for teens. Any suggestions on safe garages? I don't mind paying to make sure the car is secure. If there's a good garage around Union Station, that may be the best bet because we can get anywhere. But it might be nice to park closer to the Presidio for the day we do things there.

Any suggestions? My coworkers who live in the Bay Area think I'm crazy to take a car into SF at all, but surely there are some safe places to park?

We're a bunch of nerds, and will hit up the Exploratorium. (We have a fourth day planned at the Chabot Center and Berkeley, and other days further afield). Any other suggestions for nerdy things to see would be appreciated. (We already have the Wave Organ on the list....)

    Thanks!
