Sync for lemmy is now out!
  • For someone who has a choice you are super pissed off.

Obviously there's nothing wrong with what you want no more than there's anything wrong with people who like a particular app author and want to support him.

  • Do you believe Lemmy/Mastodon can become mainstream and fully replace their centralized counterparts?
  • Just my opinion but that ease of use will come in time. The more the learning curve exists the more we will get the power users that made Reddit special and the more Lemmy will stay special.

I don't want the Reddit of today on Lemmy. I want the Reddit 10 years ago when there was a fraction of the users on it.

We are doomed to ultimately have the same struggles that read it ended up with in terms of content and users but we can keep it held off as long as possible.

  • Does it seem like we’re mixing two concepts, having servers for users and content?
  • I agree with you.

The future is going to be different than one monolithic website and I think ultimately everyone just needs to relax for 6 months or a year and just get a feel for how all of this settles over time.

Part of the federated future is that we are going to lose content from time to time. Maybe someday someone solves that but this is what a link aggregation ecosystem with no central leadership looks like, and that's ok.

  • As Lemmy grows, and instances start taking donations, I’d love to see an open book approach to spending.
  • It's not a big deal but I personally don't agree. If I'm using an instance and I appreciate their work I donate money to them. There is nothing wrong with them making a profit or even a living off the site if I enjoy it and it guarantees it's maintenance and upkeep.

The harsh reality is that Reddit users created the situation to a degree over there. Any attempts Reddit made to try to make a profit were basically shot down.

Any kind of public ledger is going to do is open up every fucking person's judgment as to how the money is being spent. Even if you just have 5,000 users there's no way you're going to get any two retards to actually agree what's appropriate and how do we ever decide what their compensation for their time should be? Is that up to us to say?

If you like the site just donate it. It's no different than giving money to a homeless person. It ain't your job to decide how they want to spend it. If you want to give them a meal then give them a meal but if you want to give them five bucks then don't give a shit whether they go by a bottle of liquor or a sandwich. Just do your good deed and move on...

A well-made instance should charge an annual per user fee and I don't give a shit what they do with it as long as I feel like the site is being developed and maintained well.

  • Lemmy v0.18.0 Release
  • As in any project the few loud voices can be the most damaging. Please isolate yourself from that and understand the quiet majority greatly appreciates what your doing and recognizes the pressure you probably feel lately!

  • How to get involved in new initiatives for Lemmy
  • None of this should come across as argumentative or being short. My understanding is it's just two people so I still think this isn't a time to have ideas. Shoot them a message on GitHub or whatever community they have set up for feedback and help build the ranks to get them to help they need.. ;)

  • How to get involved in new initiatives for Lemmy
  • I think it's just too early for that level of formality. Basically they're swamped just actually executing changes versus the type of planning you're talking about. Maybe you can offer to help them in some way with that?
