Never went away, they're still used by independent websites. A potential hurdle was that Firefox dropped native support at one point
This is what I'm using and it's perfect for my use case. Tried more elaborate setups and it just wasn't worth it. I also use it with my household over LAN.
I started a Crucial 2 server with friends last month and I still haven't gotten bored. As a modpack conducive to roleplay and worldbuilding I'm very happy with it. That's something I like about modded Minecraft - that even the same modpack can appeal to so many playstyles.
