Manjaro distribution is introducing a system for sending telemetry about the system
  • Disk serial numbers and such can help during bug reports and tracking faults. As an example, there were barracuda drives in the past with a 30% failure rate. And they're likely just sending everything. It's hard to tell what's useful. But, if it's common, you can add a warning as an example

Also, different serial numbers and such might be different hardware revisions which have bugs.

There are also products out there which are known to have duplicate Mac addresses and such

We develop middleware for a lot of hardware, and I've actually been considering adding telemetry (but would need a huge discussion about it in-house) because I believe there are a lot of features we're adding to our products which are entirely unused (or only used by 1 person) as an example.

Telemetry is good for development efficiency. And, it might be hashed, opt in or might not reference your name (which means they can't identify you personally).

Provided it's opt in, it's actually not a bad thing (yes I'll get downvoted for that, but not too fussed). Mandatory is a different story, but remember, anyone can contribute to these projects.

And this is actually the 3rd major open source project I've seen the lemmy community try to gang up on this year. And it is discouraging developers

I'd go as far as to say that lemmy is basically anti Linux, and the community needs to start contributing and thanking developers, not just complaining every time they disagree with anything

  • ‘He’s realizing that he could lose’: the Trump campaign is panicking
  • I'm going to bed here in Australia now, and will hopefully wake up to a harris win.. Best of luck guys. The entire world is literally hoping for this (because another 4 years of racism, narcassism, BS and cult behavior is simply too much)..

  • We might be living the final moments of not being terrified what the US President is going to do
  • That's true.. They just need enough to start a civil war (and the entire point by Trump, and the rest of his cronies is to stay out of prison).

And all he needs to do, is start a coup, but not be 100% upfront this time. And he's been sowing those seeds.. He also needs to take over the justice system and the voting system (and he's been trying to do that too). The idea, like dealing drugs or the mafia, is to try to put measures in place so that other people get blamed

  • Manjaro distribution is introducing a system for sending telemetry about the system
  • Why?

Do you think they've got a Russian satellite and will track down your HDD serial number from space? There's lots of benefits to telemetry.

No it's not popular, but I'm guaranteeing none of the people complaining have contributed to manjaro

  • Manjaro distribution is introducing a system for sending telemetry about the system
  • Don't like it, don't opt in

    Even Debian has popcon

There are lots of benefits for developers to gather telemetry.

Don't like that? Fork and do your own distro (presumably though you don't contribute anything to open source, so id expect such people to simply whine and get angry at contributors)

  • Someone recorded me without permission and uploaded it to YouTube
  • Depends on the country and where it was recorded

In a lot of places, it's completely legal to record if he's part of the conversation.

If he was not, in many places it's illegal

If it's a public place where there is no expectation of privacy, also possibly nothing you can do

  • 'Am I allowed to hit her now?' Trump stuns with Michelle Obama remark
  • I've been "not threatened" twice in my life, and someone once tried to set me up in a way that were hoping to get me for break and entering.

That's what criminals do. They'll use a suspicious amount of coercive control and people like Trump also use a lot of keywords too or guide followers towards doing things they want in a way they are protected

With Trump, it's genuinely not clear

Don't forget, this is a guide who clearly tried a coup, and started cracking jokes when Pelosi's husband got attacked

Don't think of him as a person, put everything he says in the context as the mafia. And suddenly, things seem a lot worse

  • "Didn't expect MAGA to be racist to me!"
  • Yep.

    That's how dictators work

They'll shit on top of the country and try a self fulfilling prophecy . Over time, people will believe it. They'll create a negative mindset

Then when they're elected they'll do the opposite. Their supporters will simply change their mindset.

  • Trump campaign leaving some cities with hundreds of thousands in unpaid bills after rallies
  • Unpaid bills are plausibly part of the reason why his mic tends to fail at his rallies a lot.

He regularly boasts he won't be paying the contractors after any tiny issue (but is happy to continue using the equipment until the end of the rally).

There is no incentive for any decent contractor to provide services for him, especially when he's threatening to sue everyone onstage

At this point of time, everyone should be demanding money upfront and a waiver of liability

  • It’s not alarmist: A second Trump term really is an extinction-level threat to democracy
  • If Trump wins, I'd be happy to have political refugees from the US personally

And it actually affects us too. All Trump's shitty racism, bigotry, anti vaccine agenda is being reinforced worldwide because he's an idiot. And he's showing our absolutely crap political parties what they can get away with (and they're using him as an example).

For our military, don't forget, he's giving away confidential military secrets too (I have a friend in the military, and he is putting her at risk).

This is bigger than the US. It doesn't affect me as much, but i also have friends in the US

Also I'm fairly sure I could get a job in the US and residency if i wanted

  • Political ad ignites conservative anger over women possibly hiding their votes from their husbands
  • That's actually true in some of their cases, because they don't have anything else to offer the family.

I'm willing to bet a lot of these people can't cook, never clean and are insecure because they jerked around in high school.

Unfortunately for them, I agree. Better educated women are making people like Kirk obsolete. In the past, the only thing they had to offer was steady income, but now that women are often making more than many of them and are better educated, they feel threatened. So the only thing they have left is pretending women are dumb

  • It’s not alarmist: A second Trump term really is an extinction-level threat to democracy
  • Medicine? You mean like those handled by Obamacare which Trump wants to get rid of? From my understanding that was a huge change (here in Australia we have Medicare which is life changing and similar)

Also, if you're getting replaced by people from another country (who have a huge disadvantage), I'd argue maybe you need to work on improving yourself.

That being said, she's also increasing the minimum wage and taxing the rich more (whilst reducing tax for middle class and poor). So even minimum wage people are hugely better off.

Trumps bs has caused issues internationally, even here in Australia. I don't think you realise how much he is fucking things up for normal people worldwide
