Pierre Poilievre drops the glasses as part of an image revamp
  • I actually disagree - the glasses were kind of his thing...

  • I mean, tbf, he's pretty racist himself

  • Wagnerites reportedly entered Voronezh without resistance. 500km to Moscow!
  • This is fucking wild. Its so entertaining to watch Piggy man make these incredibly bold moves and try to say "all I want is to kill the people running the military", as if that's not literally defying Putin in a way that would guarantee pelonium tea. He wants to make Putin out to be the bad guy who's going after the one who's "supporting the troops" and fighting for the Russian cause.

  • How do you guys feel about our economic future?
  • At least here in Canada, I think the economic split between homeowners and renters is going to become massively painful. The government needs to step in and take dramatic action to fix this problem, but doing so could theoretically tank the price of housing, and with so many people having bought at super-high prices, a significance portion of the population (also, the majority of whom have lots of wealth) might get royally fucked. The government might have to make a decision about which portion of the population to protect, and which to sacrifice.

  • TIL that Portland's bike share program is sponsored by Nike

Nobody will ever convince me that this is not pronounced "Bike-ee town".

Bad bike racks are suppressing bike friendliness in our cities. It's time to improve bike parking
  • Yep! Oh the Urbanity is a good one, and Not Just Bike is a classic (although not just about bikes, hence the name lol)

Why did/do people refer to TV as "boob tube"?
  • Oh that makes sense! Where does the tube come from though?

  • Why did/do people refer to TV as "boob tube"?

I've heard this phrase so many times in my life I dont even think about it, but the more I dwell on it, I dont really get it

Is it okay to own a car in a rural area?
  • I bought an ebike and that's been kind of a game changer. Its allowed my partner and I to share a car, and I just ebike around at 40km/hour whenever she needs to drive. It requires a bit of willingness to get cold/wet, and some creativity with bike locking, but it makes those 10-15km distances in my hometown realistically accessible by bike on an everyday basis.

  • Is it okay to own a car in a rural area?
  • I live in a rural area and have just accepted that owning a car is a necessity. The shitty thing about living in a car dependent system is that your awareness of the shiftiness of the system doesn't necessarily exempt you from having to still live inside of it.

  • My daily driver minivan of an ebike

Its a RadWagon 4 that I bought last year to haul my kiddo around (before he was even born lol). The bike's name is Clementino.

I found the berry flat on the side of the road and then zap strapped it to the front for extra grocery carrying capacity. Its a beast of a bike for sure, but hopefully not too ugly 😄

  • What do you think about Apple and its ecosystem? (And a little conversation I had with a colleague)
  • The FOSS and open ecosystem is a deep rabbit hole to jump down. Its an important one to be sure, but its also important to know that there is no really feasible way for lay folks to fully pass any sort of purity test without swapping to Linux, using a nonstandard mobile OS, etc. These are all achievable things to do, but they come with significant tradeoffs that require people to be very tech savvy.

I'd say it would be good to learn more about open source as an idea, and then take consistent, small measures to wean yourself out of the totally closed Apple ecosystem. But dont beat yourself up - the most important change is the one upstairs...IRL impacts will flow from that over time.

  • Bringing the "city bike" outside the city is always a treat!
  • I'm going to swap out my drop bars for some Orange Velo Crazy Bars sometime in the fall or next spring I think so I can get one of those up-front kids seats for my kiddo

  • Bike Mechanics Basics: How to use barrel adjusters for brakes and gear shifting

Understanding barrel adjusters is really important if you want to tweak or make minor adjustments to your brakes or gear shifting. This is always the first place to start before getting involved with other more impactful methods of adjusting brakes/shifting.

Essentially, barrel adjusters are a great way to fix problems without needing to use tools or take your bike into the shop.

Bike Commuting Masks for Pollution: Do they ACTUALLY work? (Sort of + Why) | The Bike Commuter

With all of the wildfire smoke in North America right now, it's important to revisit the topic of masking. Turns out, COVID isn't the only thing that will fuck up your lungs.

TL;DR - They say N95 masks work alright, but N99 masks are preferable.
