Imagine how much work it must be to chalk those lines every time it rains.
I'm in NC and I believe we are hotter than TN and we have lots in our yard this year.
We didn't used to have any, but I don't rake and have spent lots blood and sweat removing invasives and planting a wide variety of flowering plants. Fireflies are hunters, so they need lots of other bugs around to eat. We have lots of other hunter species like dragon flies, preying mantis, and carolina anole. It's very validating to see them all. IMO it takes a lot more than just not raking to bring back beneficial insect populations. You need a variety of plants to feed the whole food chain of insects.
Over use of pesticides and loss of habitat that support the species they eat would be what I would look for to explain a drop in population.
