One week after the release, how are you enjoying the game? Is it everything you hoped it would be?
  • GOG launcher says I have clocked 34 hours in the game so far, I'd say that counts as a yes ;)

  • When will they learn!
  • There are a few advantages

    • you can use the latest and greatest upstream versions (even versions under active development)
    • you can let the compiler optimize for your system (especially useful with PGO, but honestly only worth it for a few applications, e.g. video encoders)
    • you have full flexibility over optional features

And it's a good learning experience, sooner or later things won't just work and you have to learn about compilers, linkers, various build systems and script languages etc.

But yeah, for most people it's not worth the effort

  • Is the game really intended to be this much of a "try-it-until-you-get-it" luck-based RPG?
  • I'm not really a "party rpg" player, and "tactics" is a foreign word to me, so I have just downgraded to the Explorer difficulty after wasting a couple of hours on the defend the grove quest.

I'm sure I'm missing a lot of things but the RNG does sometimes feel quite annoying. When I lucked out on enemies positioning themselves near explody barrels the pesky spiders crit-hit me to death, other times the suicide bombers just ran past the barrels or were to spread out to get them all.

Maybe I'll turn it back up later, or in a second playthrough, but for now I'm having more fun with the easier option. And I would recommend that to everyone who feels frustrated. The game is definitely worth it, even if it's not my usual cup of tea

  • FromSoft newcomers: what advice did you get that was actually useful?
  • And as someone who has no patience: If you are frustrated, go elsewhere the world is huge. That's a big plus for me compared to Darksouls 3. Alternatively, just stop, do something else and try again later.

Also you can go very far without mastery a technique, so don't obsess about it (I can't pary at all). Some enemies can be cheesed, some you kill with dumb luck, and if all else fails just run for it 😅

  • What's the best way to make iced coffee?
  • My two main methods are either brewing in the Aeropress but with half the amount of water, or using an espresso, as others already mentioned.

The one thing on my bucket list of things to try is "recursive iced coffee":

    • use the avove method to make iced coffee
    • freeze to ice cubes
    • make iced coffee with coffee ice cubes

I made some coffee cubes before and used them with an oat milk infusion? Drink? Whatever you're supposed to call it, and that turned out very tasty

  • Early morning flat white
  • I won't even try, but remembering art class in school I could probably use any attempt as ad-hoc Rohrschach test 😅

  • What’s your favorite AeroPress recipe?
  • Yeah, I guess without the prismo you either have to accept a little "loss" at the start of brewing or less water. Shouldn't make a huge difference either way though

  • What’s your favorite AeroPress recipe?
  • Are you breweing inverted? That'll loose you some capacity. If you have very fresh beans it might also help to wait a little longer after stirring for the CO2 to get out and not have too much foam on top

  • One of my summer favorites: Iced coffee + orange juice + ginger
  • Oh, thank you. I'll have to remember that name. Might help sell the idea when I next try to get someone to taste-test it 😅

  • One of my summer favorites: Iced coffee + orange juice + ginger
  • Hehe, don't thank me yet. The general consensus seem to be that it's an abomination from the deepest circles of hell ;)

  • One of my summer favorites: Iced coffee + orange juice + ginger
  • Well the orange juice is certainly the dominant flavor and the coffee adds some nice bitter notes to it. The ginger then brings a nice spicy kick if you like that sort of thing in your food/drinks (I do, obviously)

I'd never have thought of mixing coffee and orange on my own. Same with espresso tonic. But it turns out I like both Or maybe my brain just suffers (more) damage when the room temperature exceeds 27°C 🤷

  • One of my summer favorites: Iced coffee + orange juice + ginger
  • lol, good luck, I can already see them grabbing their pitchforks. And if they do let you live, ask them if they have any crazy recipes of their own and share with us ;)

  • One of my summer favorites: Iced coffee + orange juice + ginger
  • I swear it's not a joke - I do actually drink this. And the two friends I got to try it at least haven't sued me for poisoning them, so it can't be that bad

  • One of my summer favorites: Iced coffee + orange juice + ginger

The coffee sunrise post earlier reminded me of one of my summer favorites (I just suck at taking pretty pictures but I think you'll get the idea):

    • a strong coffee (this one is 125ml from an aeropress but a double shot of espresso/lungo also works very well)
    • about 3-4 medium sized ice cubes (enough to still have ice after pouring the hot coffee)
    • ~120ml orange juice (adjust to taste and/or the size of your cup)
    • 10-20ml of nice spicy ginger juice (if the bottle says "don't drink pure", you got the right stuff)
    • pour the coffee slowly onto the ice cubes
    • Wait a bit so it gets nicely chilled.

I like slowly sipping about half of the top layer (it's basically an iced coffee at that point) before stirring and enjoying the final mix

Dunno if there is a name for that recipe, I just combined two stolen ingredient ideas (I saw a youtube video about espresso+orange juice once and a local café had an extremely tasty cold-drip based drink that included ginger)

    What’s your favorite AeroPress recipe?
  • Beside the convenience of machine-brewed coffee I found the aeropress to be an extremly forgiving brewer. I can't remember ever making bad coffee with it (though I'm a taste barbarian, I enjoy strong flavors, but fine nuances are lost to me, so YMMV). As such my "recipe" is dirt-simple an can be done before having coffee (that circular dependency is always a problem with other methods).

    • I have that Fellow Prismo thingie, so need to mess around with brewing inverted
    • I usually add a paper filter to the metal filter, but more for cleanup reasons than taste
    • 15g beans, finely ground but not quite espresso-fine
    • Quickly add 100ish grams of boiling water
    • stirr
    • fill up to 250g water total
    • put on the plunger
    • wait about 2-3 minutes, plunge & enjoy

For my friend, or if I'm feeling the occasionly sweet tooth myself, I do basically the same just with 125g total water (can be added in one go, I only stirr after 100 above as it is easier and less prone to make a mess if you are too vigorous) The "missing" 125g of water are then replaced with 125g of milk (or a milk-replacement of your choice) + 5g (or 10 for the espially sweet toothed) sugar that receive the nanofoamer treatment

But as I said the Aeropress is extremly forgiving, you can diverge from the recipe quite a bit and still get good coffee. Sometimes I'm distracted and only come back to plunge after 8 minutes and the coffee is still good. Spoon was too full and now its 16g? No need to pick beans out of the grinder, that'll work too. If you have a feeling for measurements (I don't) you can just eyball that stuff and not sweat the details

  • Diablo IV | Season of the Malignant | Announce Trailer
  • Yeah, if they add even just somewhat decent story content they'll get me to spend money on the seasons too. Don't quite remember what put me off from trying D3, but D4 got a lot of praise for its story and atmosphere so I decided to give it a try, even if it was relativly pricy. And despite occasional server hiccups I haven't regretted that decision

It doesn't really make sense, but going to nightmare dungeons to grind so "numbers go up" doesn't really motivate me as much as a little blue exclamation mark and a nice voice over telling me to go to place X and kill monsters Y

I can see why forced restarts put some people off, but for me I guess it'l be a good thing. I'd be tempted to continue my current char otherwise, but a fresh start will mix things up and force me to try a different play style, thus keep things interresting for longer

  • Yea, thats essentially the problem. Companies getting greedy and trying to squeeze out more money by all means they can get away with. If they priced things fairly (and split the profits fairly with the content creators) a lot less people would have an incentive to look to the high seas. And just maybe (pipe dream, I know) worked out deals with each other so people wouldn't need a freakin website just to find out where the hell they have to subscribe to watch something...

And sure, customers trying to avoid paying for anything is also a problem, but I feel the "cure" a) isn't one and b) hurts the people who pay much more than those who pirate.

Essentially the grass isn't green on either side of the fence and that's why we can't have nice things 🤷

  • preach
  • Well I'd argue that two things can be wrong at the same time and I see OPs image mostly as a humorous jibe at the dubious practices that have risen with digital content. When you buy a Disc you can resell it, and the company can't knock on your door and say "Excuse me, we'd like the disc back but we'll keep your money". With a digital movie you just obtain a license to view it that you can't resell and can be taken away from you at any time (the cases I know of are admittedly rare till now and caused at least some public unhappiness and in some cases even law suites IIRC). All at the same or even higher price than before.

Then there is the fact that I'm all for using the correct terminology. When you steal something that something is lost to its previous owner. Piracy isn't stealing it's copyright infringement. Companies just prefer to call it stealing because it sounds more evil. Same with the billions of losses through piracy that they complain about. They are based on the wrong premise that every copy is a lost sale, which just isn't true. Take you for example: you can't afford it, so you personally don't loose them anything. And maybe you even buy some stuff you wouldn't have if you hadn't pirated it, or something else from that company before that you really liked. Then I remember people from my school days who had all the movies, all the games, anything. But when you asked "How is it?" they mostly answered "Oh, I haven't played it". I doubt this kind of "collector" would do the same if it actually cost them money, even if they had the means. In short those number are inflated to make the problem appear bigger than it really is.

Is it still a problem/ morally wrong? Probably, but it does put things in a different perspective for me.

And no, I don't need to justify anything to myself. My limiting resource is time, not money, so I buy my fish in the supermarket instead of trying to catch it on the high seas ;) Doesn't stop me from grumbling about them, obviously

  • What's a good audio trimming open source replacement?
  • If you are comfortable with ffmpeg you can give termux a try. I used ffmpeg through it in the past to occasionally snip out parts from mp4's and that worked like a charm.
