  • To really switch to Linux people need to accept that for a good experience you may need to switch off some software to alternative software.

This wasn't a big deal for me personally and I'm happy I use more open source software now, it can be a bigger issue especially if you need specific tools for work.

  • More than 300 Egyptians die from heat during Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, diplomats say
  • Such senseless loss of life in the name of religion.

If they'd died in the Saudi heat to a secular activity - at an F1 race event or inside a poorly A/C'd movie theater or trapped on an overheated bus - would that have been better?

Well I think religion is one of the few things you can get enough uneducated/dedicated people to die in the hundreds from heat stroke without people being like"I should probably leave"

All the examples you gave, of course except being trapped on a bus, people would realize there is a serious issue and start leaving once the first handful of people died.

"I'm not leaving the theater till I see the end of Iron man 2, I don't care that half the theaters dead and I'm next!"

    EDIT

the Hajj as a cultural event was originally intended as this class-agnostic unifying practice social event.

lol, weren't women not allowed to go alone until recently or still?

  • Ukraine to Protect Its F-16 Fighter Fleet by Basing Planes ‘in Other Countries’
  • I would be shocked if Russia did, the west has been pretty limited with allowing Ukrainian strikes with western systems on Russia even to this day. Like it or not I don't think they would attempt to strike another country because they are scared of relatiation.

I would be happy to be wrong, because if they do I think the west would join the war or allow Ukraine more Freedom with their systems. Either way the net outcome is Russians still loosing the long game, like they currently are

  • What's something you want to stop doing but can't actually stop?
  • Not a doctor but if you have some will try switching some meals to Soylent or another meal replacement drink. For the past ~7 years my breakfast and usually lunch has been Soylent, and I have a nice big real food meal for dinner.

It's really easy to track calories with meal replacement drinks and at least for me it's way healthier than what I was eating previously.

  • You heard #Adobe. Deep down you knew this was coming. Now all your art are belong to them. Time to move on to better things...
  • Right, I'm not a creative professional but the occasions I need tools adobe provides there are plenty of open source alternatives I use instead.

Sadly most people won't care about what adobe is doing, but I can only hope they continue to shoot themselves in the foot. I yearn for the day when they aren't the dominant player in the space, maybe in 15 years.

  • Massive explosion rocks SpaceX Texas facility, Starship engine in flames
  • ¯_(ツ)_/¯ while starship performance is ass compared to what they want they could still have easily put cargo onboard, you are talking about the most successful and likely profitable spaceflight company in history here you know?

SpaceX gets a lot of credit from space fans because they have proved the haters wrong time and time again, people just like you were saying the exact same garbage about falcon 9 and reusing the booster, now that SpaceX succeeded at that they practically own earth's entire launch industry and will revolutionize it again with starship.

I'm sure we will get lots of "failures" (expected test vehicle losses) along the way for you to doom on, but at the end of the day SpaceX will be the winners like they always are at the end of the day.

  • Massive explosion rocks SpaceX Texas facility, Starship engine in flames
  • "Starship did not achieve the speed needed to maintain an orbit around the earth, if it can do so has not been proven. "

Arguing this point makes you seem either uneducated on the launch or just someone shitting on SpaceX because musk. If you were actually familiar with the launch profile you would know starship nearly reached orbital velocities but did not on purpose, so it could reenter the atmosphere and test the heat shield.

So you'd be technically right in your statement, however knowing the full details of the situation makes your take stupid.

  • My bioluminescent petunia

Not an ad or anything but I got it from light.bio if you're curious. Super cool product, I've been waiting for a company to successfully bring a bioluminescent plant to the market for a decade and it finally happened!

3D printed evaporative cooler drops mushroom tent temp by 12 f

I'm just starting to get back into growing mushrooms and have a few Oyster blocks ready to fruit. Problem is the temperature in my house/grow tent is usually in the high 70's or low 80's (f), and the humidity is in the 30% range. I figured a swamp cooler could help with both of these problems.

I've made DIY swamp coolers using a 5 gallon bucket in the past, and I nearly did that again this time, but I'm trying to learn CAD so I decided to try and make something and print it instead of DIYing a 5 gallon bucket. Besides the fact that the integrated tubing inside the print is basically impossible to clean it is working well!

Here's the humidity and temperature graph over an hour after turning on the device.
