Couldn't watch the Olympics on Peacock because of this. Super annoying.
Are there any foundations that distribute donations to various FOSS projects?
I'd argue that the Vietnam draft did have a huge impact on the public reaction to the war. I think one of the reasons it didn't have immediate political results is because affluent people (the kids of politicians) had many ways to avoid service, ie college or well known health excuses. I think if those loopholes were not in place the wide public backlash we saw would have been followed quickly by real political results.
Obviously this is speculation, but there's logic in there.
I'm in favor of mandatory military service with almost no exceptions. My rationale is it would make conflict wildly unpopular if everyone had friends and family who would be directly affected.
I mean, even with a union, if a company crumbles the laborers are out of a job.
Surprisingly less true!
I just came up with a thought the other day! This would be a decades long approach and I have no idea if it would work. The idea is for generic American cities, that have a few sky scrapers in a downtown and then the burbs.
Start with 3-5 square blocks in the heart of downtown and close the roads. Make them permanently pedestrian only. These roads are typically very wide, so allow food trucks/vendors to occupy a portion of the center. Add bike lanes, and add really good reliable public transit around this area. Let that marinate for a few years, then add another chunk of the same size.
I think you would see this portion of the city become a very popular residential area. Businesses will figure out how to provide amenities where people gather. By starting small you are not requireing people to get rid of their cars, just not use them in certain areas. As this expands you will have a larger and larger portion of the population that finds it inconvenient and expensive to own a car once their needs are met in this ever expanding bubble.
I doubt you could ever get this done, but it's an idea!
Usually described as a coup.
Is that the same story as the movie by the same name?
Captain, we're going to need a new tactic. Operative 15 has found a gaping flaw in our capabilities.
Always warms my heart to see the amount of respect these athletes have for their competitors. Sometimes people are awesome!
Thanks for keeping us on topic, Chief. We almost stopped thinking about sex for a min.
I'm sure there have been minor incidents, but as far as I know Sikhism comes to mind as a religion that doesn't have blood on its hands.
It's a monarchy... So yeah...
Is this the same Bob Ballard that found the Titanic and the Bismark?
I agree, we all have search engines and if someone doesn't understand a word or phrase they can learn it on their own. Brilliant write up!
Well, not that shocked...
Moving Outdoor Plants Indoors for the Winter
What preparations do you take when moving outdoor plants indoors for the winter? I'm mostly worried about bringing bugs inside. What techniques do you use to ensure you don't get infested over the winter?
Would you support your country joining an 'open invite' Free Trade Agreement with the only stipulation being the implementation of a Carbon Tax?
The way I see it, the major barrier to countries implementing carbon taxes is the fear their economic competitors won't do the same, therefore hindering their economic growth needlessly. A valid concern.
Why don't some nations build an 'opt in' style Free Trade Agreement that allows any country to join as long as they prove they have implemented and enforced a carbon tax. Those countries then have high financial incentives to only trade within the 'carbon tax block' and any country outside is at a serious trade disadvantage.
I've (quickly) looked and have not found anything like this proposed (which is frankly crazy).
Would you support your country jumping into this FTA?
What are the unforeseen downsides or objections to a plan like this?
