Rotating banners on /r/piracy
  • They turned out pretty nice! My only suggestion isn't really AI related, but regarding the logo over it

The white border helps the black logo stand out, though maybe having an additional drop shadow could help it pop out a bit more, though that might be unnecessary. Just something I like to do when Photoshopping, but it's purely personal preference! It certainly looks good, even without it.

  • But you're not giving it up, since human-made art and AI generated images can both exist.

Sure, it could be said that AI generated images can oversaturate the internet, but a lot of sites that host art, both SFW and NSFW, have reacted by tagging AI art and allowing the user to filter them out.

There's so many forms of art in the world and one lifetime isn't enough to learn it all. Music, visual arts, cooking, writing, etc. I choose to focus on some art forms at the expense of others.

If the technology exists to make it easier to visually represent something on my mind and give me time to focus on my other pursuits, I'm all for it.

  • Gen Z is choosing not to drive
  • I feel like COVID probably had an impact on this somewhat, depending on when in 2020 the poll was conducted. Not being able to go outside would kinda hinder one's ability to learn to drive and acquire a license

  • If I were to get my hands on one of these, I probably wouldn't put too many games on there, maybe just one or two that I'm adamant on playing at the time.

I do have some low capacity micro SDs scattered at home as well that should barely be large enough to house a single switch game. So worst case scenario, I could also just pop the cart out, swap the micro SD, and plug it back in to only require a single insertion.

Granted, this might not be feasible for people who just want to use the migswitch as a backup tool to put all their legal games on one cart, but for pirates like myself I'd consider it only a minor setback.

Not to mention the cartridge slot probably being designed to last a lot of insertions before failing

  • Cookie clicker is a famous example, I think. Passively a number goes up, and you're able to increase the rate at which it goes up by buying upgrades and whatnot.

It never really appealed to me either, though maybe some people just enjoy seeing a really high score

  • Cult of the Lamb: Sins of the Flesh update goes live on January 16 [yes, "sex"]
  • To be fair, there was a lot of pushback from religious communities against violence in video games as well (i.e. "video games cause school shootings"), so I wouldn't say Christian influence would favor one but not the other. Mainstream games like GTA V also show that sexual themes can be present in video games and still be immensely popular.

I think it's more so a matter of mainstream high-budget video games portraying (and relying upon) graphic violence more often than sex. There's countless video games with graphic violence, ranging from Doom to CoD, and the similarity I see is that the graphic violence is integral to the gameplay itself. Removing the violence from these games would be tantamount to removing the game entirely.

With sex in video games, Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate 3, and the aforementioned GTA come to mind- all of which took off and became very successful, with the former two afaik being praised by many for the sexual content available. A lot of games that "rely" on sexual themes though, from what I've seen, tend to be porn games (not intended to be an insult), which at least from what I've seen, tend to not have as enthralling gameplay as other popular games. There's good ones, no doubt, but far fewer in number than the Dooms and CoDs as mentioned before.

At least that's my take on it, as lengthy as that might be lmao

  • Sahra Wagenknecht: German politician launches 'left-wing conservative' party
  • I wonder how many people a socially conservative/economically left party would actually appeal to. I can't say much about European politics in general, apart from Scholz's low approval rating. Even still, I wonder if people would really pivot away from the more right wing parties, or if this new party would come across as "just another left wing party". Either way, my initial impression is rather skeptical.

  • What is your favorite controller(s) to use with a laptop?
  • Damn, the stick drift as soon as you got it is unfortunate- I'm also surprised an open box product managed to be that defective. I remember getting a gaming laptop open box around 5 years ago, and from what I remember, it looked pristine and operated without any issues. I've recommended getting tech open box since, though with an experience like yours, I should probably temper my expectations and advice in the future.

But wow, I didn't even know Razer had a controller selling for that much. That's really steep. And yeah, I'm surprised as well more options don't exist, though I suppose it makes sense that the top brands like Microsoft and Razer dominate a market that (from what I imagine) is rather niche, as most people stick to standard Xbox/PS/Switch controllers. It's a shame modularity isn't more popular when it comes to controllers, or other pieces of tech for that matter. It's a real shame products like the Google Ara didn't take off, since those are the kinds of modular devices I'd absolutely love to see setting a mainstream trend.

  • How social media's biggest user protest rocked Reddit: The Guardian
  • Lemmy got more than just "marginally" popular. It saw the biggest boom within its entire lifetime and became a viable alternative for anyone seekong an alternative to Reddit. We both still use it.

The article proves that enough noise was made to catch the attention of the biggest news publications, which remember the protest to this day. In other words, people still remember what Reddit did.

As far as online protests go, that was more successful than any other coordinated online protest in recent memory. Gotta start somewhere.

The 1960 US Presidential Election | Sporcle Blog

Another presidential history blog post from Sporcle! This one is in regards to the 1960 election: Kennedy vs Nixon. Quite the spectacle, given how close the two candidates were, and how (in)famous both of them would be in American politics to this day.

Sporcle's trivia on presidents has been really insightful and fun to read, and I hope anyone encountering this post will find the trivia just as fun!

Ukraine war: 16 killed during attack on market in 'peaceful city'

At least 16 people, including a child, were killed in the blast, which took place on a busy market street in the middle of the day - a rarity.

Kostyantynivka, in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, is near the front line.

At least 28 people are thought to be injured. A market, shops and a pharmacy are all reported to have been hit.

Mr Zelensky, who has blamed Moscow, said those killed were "people who did nothing wrong" - and warned the death toll could increase.

"All services are working," Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal assured residents, adding: "The fire is contained."

Popular Candy of the Political Compass

First fresh post made for this Lemmy! Credits to @favrion for the initial idea. Adapted it from chocolate bars to popular candy since Skittles felt like the perfect inclusion for LibLeft. The rest followed.

Apologies for the lower quality compared to the other posts- made this using MS Paint on my work laptop instead of Photoshop on my home desktop like I usually do.
