Separate 2FA OTP app from my password manager
  • They do have desktop apps at least. I'm happy with it so far, totally second the recommendation.

Regarding your general question: I would argue that a separate 2FA app is a must, since you can not only secure your password manager with it, but also remain protected if it is breached somehow.

Having 2FA and credentials in one place partly breaks the rational between having 2FA at all.

  • YouTube tests server-side ads to make your coveted blocker obsolete
  • Let's go full guerilla: Plugin that lets you select the first and the last frame of an ad, thus allows to report the beginning and length to a synced database. When that frame is found in the buffer, skip X frames ahead.

For ergonomics, the plugin should be able to spot cuts in the video so you can easily select the correct frames.

For resilience, maybe settle for similar frames. Thinking about anti-abuse, maybe require a minimum number of reports relative to the views (and ofc allow to not skip stuff).

  • Intel finally announces a solution for CPU crashing and instability problems — claims elevated voltages are the root cause; patch coming by mid-August [Updated]
  • Still terrible for their reputation (and bank account) tho. Especially when the solution seems to be as simple as providing a new voltage curve (or offsets or limits or whatever), the problem should have been caught earlier and also resolved much faster.

Degradation because of voltage is irreversible and relatively easy to test for after all. All you need is are some extreme overclockery and a tank of LN2.

  • I mean, it is the market. The market collectively agreed that buying stuff and raising rent is better than building stuff and cutting margins in favor of volume. That and they made sure to buy as much land as possible, so no one else can either.

"Remember all the things he did? He didn't do them! The guy who shot at Trump? Obviously a deep state bureaucrat!"

I really have to wonder how you can hear stuff like that and still think that supporting these people is worth it for whatever political views one might have.

Like, even if you hate abortions from the bottom of your hart, even if you love guns do much that you use them as dildos, how can you see these clowns and think you should give them any responsibility whatsoever?

  • Seagate Skyhawk HDDs faulty / low quality?

Hey, so I have brand new HDDs I intend to put in a btrfs software RAID. They're Seagate ST4000VX016-3CV104 4TB Skyhawks. Workload is basically write and forget, I will probably never delete a thing.

However I decided to test them first and noticed that after writing about 160 GB, some SMART counters have gone up significantly. Read error rate went from 6.632 to 90.238.872 for example (seemingly all correct by hardware ECC), seek error rate from 143 to 87.661.

Am I reading things correctly? This does not seem like the way healthy drives should behave, does it? It similar on all of them tho. Are they just trash-tier drives they somehow got to work with ECC?
