Episode 114: Fight for the Bloody Bridge

Last we left off, the Mighty Nein and Bell's Hells had trekked to Ruidus and had set up themselves at the point of plan divergence towards the core and the Weave Mind. Meanwhile, we came back to Vox Machina that were helming the assault on the Malleus Key itself, and as such, drawing attention away from their more subtle plan within the depths of the red, ruddy moon. They gathered their forces, found old friends who are now centaurs, then prepared themselves in Vasselheim, gathered allies, bolstered themselves, and joining a number of oterh skyships that descended after the initial beginnings of the assault, landed within the middle of the Tishtan Excavation site (the massive ancient stronghold now risen through the psychic powers of the Weave Mind) broken and standing frightening. They battled their way through the core of where they had landed, heading towards where the Malleus Key currently stood. We left off just as they began to find the core of their goal. This was the site that you had gained eyes on as you began to approach on that far end. So you haven't engaged yet, but you are on the cusp of it.

  • No worries,
Having the Critical Role tag in the Author space is helpful for searches in the Amazon database. I'm sure it won't take credit from the author. Plus it's already kinda established that CR is all about giving proper credit, hence why the art scroll isn't just submissions anymore, rather a vetted group of artists who regularly contribute. Even their reputation for recognizing and celebrating behind-the-scenes crew is still good from past and present contributors, last I checked.

    > A merchant’s daughter who yearns for adventure gets more than she bargained for when she falls for a broodingly handsome stranger in this saucy romantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hurricane Wars.

    > As the daughter of an ambitious merchant, Guinevere’s path has been predetermined: marry into a noble house of the Dwendalian Empire, raise her family’s station, and live quietly as a lordling’s obedient wife. But Guinevere longs for a life unbounded by expectations, for freedom and passion and adventure.

    > Those distant dreams become a sudden reality when her caravan is beset by bandits, leaving her guards slain and Guinevere stranded alone on the dangerous Amber Road. Her only chance of survival is to travel alongside Oskar, the aloof half-orc who saved her during the attack.

    > Unlike Guinevere, Oskar’s path is not so set in stone. With his mother dead and his apprenticeship abandoned, all that’s left is a long, lonely walk to a land he’s never seen to find family he’s never met. The last thing he needs is a spoiled waif like Guinevere slowing him down—even if the spark between them sizzles with promise.

    > Despite his cold exterior, Oskar is brave and thoughtful and unlike anyone Guinevere has ever met. And while Guinevere may be sheltered, she brings out a softness in him that he has never dared to feel before. As the flames of their passion grow, they realize that soon they’ll need to choose between their expected destinations or their blossoming romance.

Written by New York Times bestselling author Thea Guanzon at the behest of Critical Role’s Jester Lavorre, Tusk Love brings the most romantic story on Exandrian bookshelves to life.

Episode 17: A Date with Death

You began in the woods of Mab, close to the workshop of Yannik. Still unsure of how to deal with Petra (the remaining tiefling under the thrall of Dolly's Suggestion spell). Raidion and Kelnys attempted to convince her that her companions had been killed by gnomes. They swiftly failed in this objective, but Petra (seemingly resigned to the idea that chaos would follow the deaths of the Virtuous) was willing to talk. She shared a strange conversation with Raidion as the wood elf helped her bury her tiefling companon. Meanwhile, Quincy (savant of the workshop) headed back inside with I (tCntM) to make the necessary repairs to I's Grēnweard crossbow. As the gnome and the kobold tinkered, the first tentative bonds of trust emerged between them. With Quncy coaching I through the process. Dolly set to reading the tome that Torian gave her, as Raidion attempted to gain more information on Iago (the leader of the gang that Petra was a member of). She revealed that he ran card games and was an expert at winning games of chance by whatever means necessary. She also explained that the gang had raided the gnomish workship hoping to find funds that would cover their costs while they waited for a substantial debt to be paid. Petra told him that they did not plan to return to the gang, instead striking out on her own, greeting Raidion's idea that she should relocate to Mouse with scorn. The burial complete, Petra headed out into the woods alone. Meanwhile Quincy and I had completed their renovation of the crossbow and the kobold shared his plans for a high chair with the gnome, the two of them riffing on more ways the design could be optimized. Quincy agreed to try to created a formal schematic that I could take to a carpenter needing a day in her home in Yannik to finalize the design. Having rested that night, you headed towards Yannik, deciding on some extraordinary pseudonyms, including Missy, Pebble, and Steve Chase. Now, sure to avoid detection, you reached the farms that bordered the town. You were initially concerned that there were no signs of life in the fields, though Quincy reassured you that the populace would be gathered in Oratory Square in the center of Yannik (where the people meet to vote on matters of great importance in a tradition called "The Right of Common Voice"). This proved to be the case when you reached the town center. All the folk of Yannik gathered as a single elf stood atop a fountain pontificating and philosophizing to the frustration of the assembled crowd. You learned that this elf was called Penick Winter von Ven, a member of a group called "The Learned Friends" (a glorified debating society and educational institution who often hijack the Right of Common Voice to practice their debating skills). The reason for the gathering of the people seemed to be the attack on the workshop and the gnomish community's desire for the watch to be dispatched to rescue Quincy. When Quncy revealed herself to be alive and well, the crowd began to disperse before Elowen spotted a familiar face making her way through the crowd towards your gnomish friend. It was Aeris (mother of Isolde and 'Reeve' of Yannik). Elowen asked Quincy to make introductions and Aeris attempted ot hid her surprise at Elowen's appearance, inviting you all to the official residence where you could talk in private. Spotting I's newfound proximity to Quincy, Raidion and Dolly attempted to interrogate the kobold on whether any romantic feelings had begun to develop. I was genuinely baffled by the insinuation (not understanding the first thing about romance), yet he still somehow managed to get himself politely turned down by Quincy (who remained none-the wiser throughout the interaction). In the house of the Reeve, Elowen told Aeris of Isolde's wish (that the people of Yannik relocate to Mouse). Aeris agreed that it would be wise, but the traditions of the town decreed that she cannot issue an order, only invite people to vote. She told you that the main obstacle to such a vote being cast was the Learned Friends, and chiefly Penick Winter von Ven (who choked any chance of a decision being made by monopolizing the debate). He made multiple offers to kill various members of the House of Learned Friends, all of which were politely rebuffed by Aeris. Raidion recalled Iago being owed a debt by a highborn elf and came to the conclusion that Penick could be the elf in question. So you headed to the Black Cat Tavern (which Aeris had told you was located at the southern edge of the town). It was a run-down establishment owned by a surly dwarf called Tommen (who was reluctant to buy spoons, but quite happy to sell information). He told you that Iago might be found at the card table at the Tipsy Scholar. So that was where you headed next. Workshopping a name for your new spoon-selling company on the way. You found the Tipsy Scholar to be a far salubrious establishment with its halfling landlord Broderick starved of conversation by his haughty clientele. Dolly successfully schmoozed him and secured a few spoon sales until he offered her a seat at the exclusive card table that his son Finley runs in the back of the tavern. As Dolly secured rooms for the night, the rest of you occupied a table and waited for the card game to start. The conversation drifted to relationships and romance with Kelnys becoming distant as the focus turned briefly to him. After some time passed, the door to the tavern opened and a tiefling entered and spoke to Broderick. It was Iago himself, searching for someone. Having told Broderick to do what he could to ensure a certain acquaintance of theirs sat at the table that evening, Iago left the tavern, followed by Raidion and I. They snuck across Oratory Square, watching as Iago stared at the House of Learned Friends, only moving when a scholar emerged. He tracked the scholar down a quiet side street; Raidion and I managing to keep pace without being seen themselves. Reaching his prey, Iago forced him up against a wall where he threatened him, cutting him with a whip carried at his side and telling him to make certain that another scholar attended the card game. Deciding against attempting to steal Iago's whip, Raidion and I (tCntM) headed back to the Tavern where Broderick led you through to the card room at the rear of the Tipsy Scholar. There you found Iago waiting, along with Finley (Broderick's son) sat at one of the tables. Dolly joined them and they played a few hands in anticipation of a third party. As the rest of you busied yourselves with books and took your seats at the remaining table, Dolly and Iago traded wins and losses with Dolly realizing that her fellow tiefling was forcing cards and cheating (though she decided not to call out this trickery). After the second hand was played, you heard the noise of someone approaching the card room. It was Penick Winter von Ven. Iago changed in an instant, insisiting that everyone leave. Broderick and Finley did so (the rest of you remaining) as Iago struck Penick with his whip before Dolly stepped in. Elowen closed the door, leaving the five of you alone with Iago and Penick, the tiefling smiling as he considered his options. Roll Initiative Iago has just watched you shut the door, Elowen (with Kelnys nearby). Dolly, you're directly in front of him with Penick nearby, prone on the floor. The other three of you are 15 feet away towards the far wall where the other table is located near some bookshelves. Iago looks at you, Dolly. Takes in your friends and says, "You made a very big mistake." You watch as he lifts his hand, and from his palm spreads a sphere of blood-red mist.

Knowing that a spot in this year's Grey Hunt would be passed on, the grand-cubs had been on their best behavior. All turning into brave guardians scanning for danger and honing their abilities.
In "bear language", the cubs had simple, elemental names. In some cases those names would correspond with the "fur patterns" of the humans they knew best. For example: A black cub named Feathers (for Vax), a larger cub simply named Boulder (after Grog), a light grey cub named Storm (you'd think it was for the fur pattern, but no, Storm is the Husky (dog breed) of bears and Very Vocal, so the namesake is from Percy's loud guns)...

Other potential names: Wind (Kiki) Bird (Scanlan), Shiny (Pike)

Episode 113: Assault on the Malleus Key

Bell's Hells and the Mighty Nein had traversed through the hidden portal to Ruidus, had gone to the depths of the Ruidian capital city of Kreviris and made contact with the remnants of the Volition, set themselves up, prepared for the assault on the Malleus Key to commence and be the distraction they need to divide and hit their targets within the red moon. As they gave message, we cut to a short time before this where the members of Vox Machina present in Vasselheim begin to collect the rest of their allies so they can be part of the spearhead of this attack on the Malleus Key and the fortress that has risen from the surrounding dust of the Tishtan Site in the Hellcatch. As you went to Whitestone and gathered Percival de Rolo, Cerkonos the Flamespeaker from Pyrah had joined you from Vasselheim, and the one member you had a hard time locating for quite some time seemed to be on a trek in Wildemount. Upon catching up with Scanlan Shorthalt himself and his troupe of traveling midlife crises (transformed into purple centaurs) were making their "leather jacket road trip" across that distant continent before you let him know that you needed his help once more. Upon him decidin to join, you all had a group hug as he mentioned that he had to tell the other guys and let them know what's going on. So here in the darkened, star-filled night in the Barbed Fields of the exterior range of Bazzoxan in the plains of Xhorhas, the Wastes, you disengage from your group hug and Scanlan (lower horse body and tail) the rest of your friends await you to join their band not far from where you currently converse.

    "The Sun Tree"

The party recently had an encounter with the Briarwoods. Two individuals that were responsible for a lot of strife in the background of Percival's history. Seemingly responsible for the destruction of his entire family, and have for the past five years been essentially ruling his home city and castle. They were out for a political banquet with Sovereign Uriel in Emon and the party members of Vox Machina, they were all invited to be part of this. It didn't quite go as planned. There was a scuffle and the Briarwoods absconded back to Whitestone. They send a couple assassins out to attempt to take out their driver, who was spilling information and essentially was going to be Vox Machina's way of being free of any sort of political issues (based on their actions that evening) and after much discussion and preparation and purchasing a lot of mirrors, the party took their transit over to the east-northeast towards Whitestone, where they began to traverse the Alabaster Sierras to the north (using the mountain range as opposed to going directly through the forest). There they managed to avoid encountering a bunch of harpies that were distracted by eating the horses they left behind. They camped for the evening and began to make their way through some sort of a mountainous valley that led in towards the forest surrounding Whitestone. While they were traveling down this pass, there was a rumbling, and some sort of really fast, rapid-moving large blue creature that leaped down in front, catching them off-guard. As this huge, blue-scaled reptilian-like creature (with multiple arms and legs) comes skittering down the side of the cliffs, blocking off the entirety of this passage, snarling at you with sharp teeth and this sparking-blue electrical energy jutting out of the corners of its mouth. I want you all to roll initiative.

Episode 16: Politics and Poker Faces

You began in Mab. The Docent of Grace having spoken words you heard in the orbs at the peak of Mt Atria. After whispering into Kelnys' ear, the dragonborn asked to know more, whereupon the Docent recounted everything you had heard from the orbs at the top of the mountain. Exhausted by the effort, the Docent needed support from Dolly, not knowing where this new knowledge had come from. She did, however, recognize the party, having seen Barabask's message in the sky after the battle for Mouse. The Docent reassured the newly dead that she did not believe Barabask. Five mortals surely couldn't slay nine gods and four antiqua. Reassured, Kelnys offered a gift. A staggeringly beautiful cherrywood spoon. Moved by the craftsmanship, the Docent offered Kelnys a truth, telling him that "Yilder seeks the son of the Tree Speaker". You bade farewell to the Docent and headed into Mab, finding a tree under which you could make a camp. As the rest of you slept that night, Dolly was left to watch, though she failed to hear footsteps stumbling through the wood. Fortunately, Kelnys (tossing and turning in a sleepless night) was roused and headed towards the noise, finding a gnome stumbling through the woods. The gnome's name was Quincy and she was Savant of the nearby gnomish temple which had hosted a gathering of the local gnomish folk after Barabask's revelation. During their discussion, a gang of tieflings had entered the workshop, demanding that the gnomes turn over any gold that they had hidden. When Quincy protested, she had been knocked unconscious, only waking in the night and sneaking away. You offered to help her on the condition that you receive some form of reward, with Quincy agreeing to your terms and guiding you through the woods. At the workshop, you approached to the sound of voices within. Two tieflings arguing over Quincy's escape mentioning a highborn elf who owes a debt to Iago (their leader). Raidion led as you gained access pretending to be a party of refugees from Mouse looking for shelter. Dolly cast Charm Person to sweeten the deal with the two tieflings while Kelnys took the remaining bandit (a human wizard) into a side room where he tried to subdue him. The dragonborn was unable to do so and the Wizards summoned an earth elemental. Dolly convincing one tiefling to drink wine outside with her as the rest of you scrambled to dievert attention away from Kelnys' fight. As I (tCntM) and Ellowen joined forces with Kelnys to kill the caster and consequently the elemental he had summoned Raidion battled with the remaining tiefling. Another clutch use of Hypnotic Gaze turning the tide of battle in his favor. Together you downed the hypnotized tiefling and searched the temple (finding no wealth, nor bodies, but) revealing a spectral hologram of Ristrin (the gnome deity). That done, you headed outside, where the remaining tiefling happily drank wine with Dolly, revealing that Iago (their leader) sometimes had rooms at the Black Cat Tavern in the attic. You left Petra, still under the thrall of the Suggestion spell and rejoined Quincy, resolving to head into Yanick with the gnome, though not before she made repairs to I's Grēnweard crossbow. It is still nighttime. The smallest of the small hours; 2-3 o'clock in the morning. You're on the edge of the tree line. Quincy with you having just agreed to fix I's crossbow. You can hear the occasional satisfied slurping of wine from Petra away at the front of the workshop on the grass.

Polygon Interview with Liam, Travis, and Marisha

We asked the Critical Role cast the meanest questions we could think of

Three Critical Role players talk priorities, the Mighty Nein show, and whether TV changed their role-play sessions

    article by Tasha Robinson

    > With the third season of the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina wrapped, the Critical Role role-playing team is now looking forward and back at the same time — back to the Vox Machina storyline of their D&D campaign as they hope and plan for a season 4 of the TV adaptation, and forward to their next TV series. Polygon sat down with Legend of Vox Machina writer-producer Travis Willingham (the voice of goliath barbarian Grog Strongjaw) and writers Marisha Ray (half-elf druid Keyleth) and Liam O’Brien (multiclass elf Vax’ildan) to talk about different projects and hard choices.

    > The cast had a lot of “regerts” and wins to unpack from season 3, but they’re also looking ahead to their next animated show: Mighty Nein, an adaptation of Critical Role’s second major campaign. Which gave us a chance to ask a cruel question about their priorities and their favorite child.

    > This interview has been edited for clarity and concision.

Polygon: Where are you at this point in developing the Mighty Nein animated series?

Travis Willingham: We have written all of season 1. The storyboards are all being locked, if they haven’t been already. So it’s off to our overseas studio. We’re getting animation tests back and seeing things come back in color. We’ve designed all the characters. The magical spells and effects are being considered. We’re talking about music, and how it’s going to be different from Vox. So it’s definitely more than halfway done, and I think everybody’s going to be really thrilled with the way it’s turning out. It is not going to be the same tone as Vox Machina. In Vox, they start together. They’re kind of a bunch of slap-dicks that are just making the best of their situation. But I think we did that because we knew we had a short runway to start with. [With Mighty Nein], we wanted to back up even further, and start from what I think we would call a Session Zero perspective, which is meeting the characters individually, taking our time with How do they come together? and really letting people see the earliest parts of their journeys. Because as anyone that knows the Mighty Nein campaign would know, the characters don’t even know if they’re the good guys or the bad guys. That’s something we’re excited to explore.

Marisha Ray: Yeah, we did not start off as friends. [Everyone laughs] We did not like each other.

Polygon: What have three seasons of Legend of Vox Machina taught you that you’re taking into Mighty Nein from the beginning?

Travis: So much. I think the biggest thing from an animation perspective, which we had never endeavored at before, was that when you have seven characters on screen at the same time, it’s hard to draw. So we had to find clever ways [with The Legend of Vox Machina] to split up the group, or make sure that focus was given to certain characters. If it’s really two characters talking, does everybody else need to be there in the background? When we were playing at the table, the motto was “Never split the party.” It is the exact opposite in animation: It’s “Try and find any opportunity to split the party.” Not just for the animation, but also so the character focus can really be there.

Polygon: Has the process of developing the shows — these condensed, intensified versions of these arcs — changed how you role-play at the table? In the backs of your minds, are you thinking, This game needs to play as a TV show someday?

Liam O'Brien Some people might think that. But if you look at the Bells Hells team we’re playing as now, they are the most Suicide Squad bunch of weirdos. You’re like, Why are they together? I mean, I know where they are now, but at the beginning, you’re like, Who are these people? What’s happening? So it would not appear to our audience that we came in going like, OK, cartoon number three, here’s what the focus group said would be best. Everybody just gravitated toward something they thought would be fun. And that’s all we’ve ever done at the table. There are definitely moments where we’re like, “That was cool. I can totally see that animated.” But that’s an after-effect, not the goal.

Marisha: Yeah, I feel like when we got into Mighty Nein, we were like, Oh man, this group, they’re so crazy. Look at them, they’re the Suicide Squad! And then Bells Hells was like, Hold my beer. When it comes to the miniseries, like something with Calamity or any of Exandria Unlimited, we have a turn of phrase we use when doing them: “Drive it like you stole it.” You only have four episodes or eight episodes at best, so you have to go hard, go fast, commit.

But I think that’s more indicative of just having fewer episodes in a miniseries in terms of doing anything at the table differently. The only thing that really changes is, sometimes something cool will happen and we’ll be like, “Damn, that’ll be cool animated.”

Polygon: So speaking of those series, Mighty Nein and Bells Hells, here’s the meanest question I can think of for you. Amazon comes to you with one big pile of money and says, “You can use this to finish Legend of Vox Machina as you imagined it, or make a Mighty Nein show, or make a Bells Hells show, or make an original show of your choosing — but only one of those, and nothing else, ever.” What do you choose?

Liam: Meaning we have to kill off the other children? I love it! This is good.

    Ray: Yeah. Ow.

Willingham: This is a Hells of Despath question. Man. I would probably hit — oh gosh. I would say Mighty Nein, because we’ve had a chance to chew on Vox Machina. And I think the larger world would be richer for it. Season 3 [of Legend of Vox Machina] ends in a nice place. If that’s the end of the story, then great, but at least we get Mighty Nein out of it.

    O’Brien: That’s true, that’s true.

Willingham: That was a cold-hearted decision!

Ray: I know! It’s so hard!

Willingham: I don’t want to be the president of the United States. Don’t make me push the button!

Ray: I mean, I would love to just tap into Calamity. If they give us a big pile of money, like “This is your $100 million-an-episode, Rings of Power-level stuff”… Imagine that with Calamity.

    Willingham: Now I have regerts!

Ray: It’s OK! We’re spreading it out! We’re spreading it out.

O’Brien: But a different answer — even though those are both great answers and Travis’ argument specifically sways me — however, the audience and I would feel choked to death if we don’t get to see Vox Machina, the story that we started with, finish. I love all our babies, but they’re our first child. We learned how to do everything that we’re doing with those assholes, so I’d like to see them reach the finish line.

Willingham: We covered our bases. Thank God.

Episode 112: The Assembling of Legends

Bells Hells and the Mighty Nein had teamed up to be the 'away squad' to head to Ruidus through the portal that was discovered in Issylra, while the rest of Exandria planned an assault on the Malleus Key (both as a distraction to allow these two groups to go unnoticed to and inside the moon itself before dividing to two different tasks:

    1. The Mighty Nein head into the Arx Creonum and destroy the Weave Mind
    2. Bell's Hells clamber into the depths and the core of Ruidus itself to stop the Ruby Vanguard and Ludinus from releasing Predathos.)

As you prepped for this journey, traversed to Ruidus and then teleported into the basement of the Jagged Edge Glassworks where Caleb had set up his Nein-sided Tower for an evening's rest before the final push towards their collaborative missions. There the groups got to know each other a little better, prepared for the evening with some spells and enchantments that would last them for the coming day, and then eventually, dividing amongst their various chambers to rest for the night, while also discussing what may very well be the last night on Exandria for all of them. With that a night's rest is had and the morning comes to. You all begin to rouse from your collective slumber and gather within the main chamber of the Nein-sided Tower.

The Witch Wolf by Dani Carr and Bree Williams

    The Witch Wolf

A webcomic about love and magic.

by Dani Carr & Bree Williams

    > The Witch Wolf is a story dealing with adult characters and adult themes. As the story progresses, heavy topics will be experienced and discussed. This is a supernatural romance story that dips into the gothic setting and will delve into content regarding power, consent, and sex. We will strive to always provide content warnings about these heavier topics when they come into play. But rest assured, this is also a story with a happy ending, as well as a LOT of comedy, love, and beauty. It’s going to be a roller coaster ride, but we will do our best to keep everyone reading it safe the whole time.

    > In general, The Witch Wolf should be considered Rated R or M for Mature, depending on your preferred scale.

    > We hope you enjoy!

    Episode 111: The Nein Hells

Bell's Hells had returned to Vasselheim, having thwarted (it seems) the Unseelie reunion with the Vanguard. In doing so, eliminated one of the powerful associates of Ludinus Da'leth (the Sorrowlord Zathuda himself, the blood father to Fearne). With the information you have, you walked through the city, you gathered some supplies, and prepared yourselves for what is the looming return to the surface of Ruidus, where you and another troop are to secretly traverse once more towards the capital city of Kreviris; to delve beneath its surface into a hidden spot before infiltrating the core of the city to notify those back on Exandria that you are in position, so the assault can begin and distract the enemy forces and factions to best enable both of your teams to succeed at their goals. After you gathered your things and said some goodbyes, ordered some alcohol, climbed into a dead titan's 'ass crack bar'. You met up with two familiar Zephran family members of Orym, who escorted you to Lake Umamu on the far western side of Issylra, where you had uncovered that secret underwater portal, the backdoor entrance to Ruidus and its hidden tunnel. Unknown to most but just a few. As you arrived in the familiar abandoned fishing village (now partially taken over by the Zephran forces in preparation for your arrival) you set up within the nearby inn, where you had stayed before, talked amongst yourselves until your companion team arrived. One you've met a couple members of, but have been told they're referred to as The Mighty Nein, a very chaotic introduction of both sides coming to meet together was left on a final question from Laudna, "Why are there only seven of you?"
