NBA Cup 2024: Dates, Groups, Format, More for In-Season Tournament
  • I’ll say it made the games a bit more entertaining than a normal regular season game which is all I had hoped for.

I never thought it’d match or come close to the actual playoffs it’s more just to spice up the long regular season since I don’t see them shortening it. For that scope I think it was a success last year but we’ll see how it is going forward.

    > Similar to the 2023 edition of the tournament, teams will participate in group play on Tuesdays and Fridays from Nov. 12 through Dec. 3. The teams at the top of each group will advance to the single-elimination knockout rounds, while one wild card team from each conference will also be included.

    Found a better explanation:

From Nov. 12 to Dec. 3, each team will play four games — one game against each team in its group (two at home and two on the road). Eight teams will advance to the knockout rounds (six group winners and two wild-card teams in each conference) consisting of single-elimination games in the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals and championship. The championship will be held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

NBA finalizes deals with ESPN, NBC, Amazon; TNT could match
  • Feel like it’s still fairly easy to find alternative means thankfully but I do like being able to pause or watch on a slight delay without missing anything so it’s annoying the games are now on 3 different services.

  • NBA finalizes deals with ESPN, NBC, Amazon; TNT could match
  • Some more info:

Under the new NBA television deals with ESPN, NBC and Amazon Prime, the regular season would feature national telecasts nearly seven days a week, according to sources briefed on the agreements.

The NBA will borrow a page from the NFL, as following the end of football’s regular season, NBC will have the NBA succeed the highest-rated primetime show on television, “Sunday Night Football,” while, on Thursdays, Amazon will do the same after its TNF coverage concludes.

During the entire regular season, Amazon Prime Video is anticipated to have its other games streamed predominantly on Friday nights and Saturdays.

NBC will have games throughout the full NBA season on Tuesdays. Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, is expected to have exclusive telecasts on Mondays. Peacock will also simulcast all the NBC games.

ESPN will slightly cut down on the amount of regular-season games, going from around 100 now to the range of 80. During the NFL season, it will have its games on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with its Saturday night game being its special ABC window. Later in the year, after the NFL, ESPN will have Friday night action, as well.

All three platforms will have playoff games, while Amazon Prime Video will be the home of the In-Season Tournament. Amazon and NBC will alternate showing conference finals. ESPN will have a conference final and the NBA Finals each season.

NBA finalizes deals with ESPN, NBC, Amazon; TNT could match

    > The NBA and network executives finalized contracts that will make NBC and Amazon Prime Video new partners, while maintaining ABC/ESPN as the home of the NBA Finals, under agreements that will extend for 11 seasons and be worth $76 billion, according to executives with direct knowledge of the deals.

    > While the NBA and its partner agreed to all the language, incumbent TNT Sports continues to threaten to match. The CEO of TNT Sports’ parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, has publicly stated he may attempt to use language in the current contract to remain involved with the NBA. If Zaslav goes through with that, he is expected to target Amazon’s package.

RIP Inside the NBA it was great while it lasted. Another great thing Zaslav has ruined.

George also revealed that in 2019, Leonard contacted George about leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder to go to the Toronto Raptors.

Paul George dishes on ‘disrespectful’ year of LAC negotiations

    > New Philadelphia 76ers star Paul Georgesaid a “disrespectful” initial contract offer and the lack of a no-trade clause were among the reasons he left his hometown LA Clippers after five seasons.

    > George, who signed a four-year, $212 million contract to join the 76ers last week, said the Clippers initially offered him two years and $60 million last fall during in-season negotiations that he eventually tabled in February.

    > “I’m like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,” George said on his podcast, “Podcast P.” “Two years, 60? That’s crazy! I’m not signing that.”

    > When negotiations resumed after the season, George wanted a no-trade clause to go with a three-year, $150 million offer from the Clippers. But he said LA didn’t want to include a no-trade clause or a fourth season on the deal, leading to his decision to team up with NBA MVP center Joel Embiid and 2024 Most Improved Player recipient Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia.

Quoted most of it here but if anyone wants a 30-day Athletic pass to read the rest just pm me.

I know he was looking for a 4 year deal but the fact that he would’ve taken 3 if it included a no trade clause is new and a bit of a head scratcher that the Clippers were willing to let him walk over that. Presumably they offered him the 3 to match with Kawhi and the plan would be to have them play out the contacts to get people in the new stadium even if they’re not contenders. But it was pretty clear that this team wasn’t going far so maybe the tax bill was too high even for the Clippers.

Whether It’s Biden or Someone Else, Gaza Remains Top Priority for “Uncommitted” Voters
  • Didn’t really bury it because I don’t agree with that analysis and it’s not part of the poll.

If they’re polling similar to him with 39%-71% of the people not knowing who the candidate is that means their floor is where Biden is.

  • Whether It’s Biden or Someone Else, Gaza Remains Top Priority for “Uncommitted” Voters
  • The post-debate Data for Progress poll tested the odds of eight Democrats who have been floated as possible alternatives to Biden, including Vice President Kamala Harris and multiple Democratic governors. Biden’s self-proclaimed advantage is tempered by the lack of name recognition — so far — for the other options. Aside from Harris, prospective voters were so unfamiliar with these Democratic leaders that between 39 and 71 percent* *of respondents said they hadn’t heard enough about them to have an opinion. Even so, each potential candidate performed the same or even better than Biden.

  • China has declared that all rare earth mineral deposits within the country now belong to the state. China controls 60% of global rare earth mineral reserves and accounts for 90% of production globally
  • The fact that the government recognized the issue and stepped in to take control of the industry in order to prevent issues is a win compared to how things are allowed to just burn out and fail potentially causing larger issues in for the economy in other countries.

Most countries wouldnt be able to say no to capital and it would meant the resources would continue to cheaply get extracted at the expense of the long term health of the counties industry.

  • China has declared that all rare earth mineral deposits within the country now belong to the state. China controls 60% of global rare earth mineral reserves and accounts for 90% of production globally
  • So what’s your issue here?

If prices are falling low enough that it’s causing financial issues for some of these companies that would tell you that there’s too much supply relative to demand so you’d obviously slow production. By your own post you’re saying it’s so the refineries can stay in business, that would mean the price is too low for it to be economically viable.

If you let things continue eventually one would go bankrupt if they don’t slow production so one way or another the supply would come down.

  • They need a backup for Turner so it’s a low risk move depending on how much the contact is. Maybe he lives up to some of the potential and if not it’s just a 2-year deal that I’m guessing is pretty cheap.
