Surgeon General: Why I’m Calling for a Warning Label on Social Media Platforms
  • I grew up in the time when all these social media platforms first came out. I was in middle school when Facebook became popular and by the time I was in highschool everyone had a smartphone. This was way before things got as bad as they are now so I know I'm not exactly an expert in this department. But at the same time, social media fucked me up for years. I'd be glued to my phone all day without any breaks. I decided the only social media I was gonna use was Reddit. After I deleted all my accounts and went to just Reddit I thought things were gonna be better. But instead I'd waste hours upon hours just browsing on Reddit.

Now reddit is garbage and these days the only real social media I use is here on the fediverse. This place is still pretty small, but I feel like that's a good thing. There is just enough content to get my fill for 20 minutes, move on, and then come back in like 4 or 5 hours. Not having social media in my face all the time has honestly made me feel the best mentally that I ever have. Or at least since I was in highschool. These days I can forget my phone in my car when I get home without even realizing it until I'm about to go to bed and need to set an alarm.

I don't know what the moral of my story is, but I just wanted to share. I definitely think social media should have a warning. Most people will ignore it of course, but it's a start. It's just nice being somewhere where you're not drowning in content, clout seekers, and companies all shoving things down my throat to suck as much attention as physically possible out of me.

    happy pride month !
  • I'm just a dude cruising around here browsing "everything" while at work instead of doing my job, so I know I don't really have a say here. But I just wanted to say something...

First off, I 100% support everyone that is in this community. I'm bisexual myself and I will always support everyone involved. But I just gotta say... This acronym is getting a little long these days. I understand that everyone wants to be represented and I have nothing against that. I'm just saying we only got 19 letters left.

Anyway, this is just the opinion of a bored dude procrastinating at work.

CEO Relieved AI Can Never Replace Him If He Already Contributes Nothing To Company
  • I understand completely. My main concern however is not startup companies. I'm all for supporting smaller companies. It's more like huge corporations where the CEO takes the majority of the money and probably spends more time on vacation than actually doing anything. Even though I'm sure they do more than I am letting on, I don't think it justifies millions or even billions of dollars in pay and bonuses. If they started the company that's one thing. However most CEO's of large corporations are so far removed from the initial founding of the company they basically have less to do with what the company does than the average employee. The amount of money these companies could make if they actually put that money back into it is potentially higher than current profits. It's really a win-win situation for everyone except for the CEO instead of just a win for the CEO and nobody else.

  • CEO Relieved AI Can Never Replace Him If He Already Contributes Nothing To Company
  • Honestly all these companies trying to use AI to replace their workers is pretty funny when you consider that their job is probably the easiest to replace. In fact, AI is a bit overkill. Really all you'd need is a semi reliable algorithm to do the shit they do. I'm not surprised The Onion sees this too.

  • Report: Apple and OpenAI have signed a deal to partner on AI
  • Just look up Sam Altman on job replacement my dude. He doesn't give a single fuck about anyone and just keeps going for the sake of progress. All he does is avoid questions and use buzzwords just like the rest of them. He sounds like Elon Musk 10 years ago before he stopped trying to hide the crazy.

Report: Apple and OpenAI have signed a deal to partner on AI
  • Two morally bankrupt companies pooling their resources to make the most controversial and often shady tech we've seen in years. What could go wrong?

I mean, every company making AI these days is morally bankrupt. It's just the idea of any of them teaming up in the first place that gives me a bad feeling.

  • U.S. workers are less satisfied with nearly every aspect of their jobs than they were a year ago, survey finds
  • This time last year I was 29 years old, had no house, $7,000 of credit card debt, and made $21 an hour.

Right now I'm 30 years old, I have no house, $7,000 of credit card debt, and make $21 an hour.

Of course I'm unsatisfied. Because I know my hard work doesn't pay off and all I'm doing is existing with no money or time left over for myself. I don't give a single fuck about my job at this point besides doing the bare minimum. Which is pretty sad because I used to actually enjoy my job and would work as hard as I could.

  • When did you get hit by "the tetris effect" AKA playing a video game so much that you get the urge to do moves/actions from the video game in real life?
  • I get this all the time because I tend to binge games over weekends when I got nothing else going on. I'll give two examples that I remember the most.

One of the most prolific is Factorio. Seeing conveyor belts everywhere I go. Whether I'm awake or about to fall asleep I just constantly see conveyor belts as I solve non existent problems with the efficiency of said conveyor belts.

The weirdest was after Outer Wilds. I binged it for about 12 hours straight one day. You spend a lot of time orbiting around planets and landing on them. After I was done I was walking around my apartment and felt like I was "orbiting" a spaceship around my apartment. It felt super weird to walk. Felt like the floor was the surface of a planet and my head was a spaceship flying miles above it trying to land.

  • Google Researchers Say AI Now Leading Disinformation Vector (and Are Severely Undercounting the Problem)
  • Funny how the average person figured this out almost immediately while Google needed half a year to figure it out with their researchers. Almost like they were ignoring it as long as they could for the sake of profit. Fuck around and find out, I guess.

  • Microsoft is not buying Valve and Counter-Strike for £12 billion
  • Haven't bought a game from EA, Ubisoft, Epic Games in years. Haven't given Blizzard money since they fucked up Overwatch and haven't given Microsoft money since they fucked up Halo. Haven't bought a Bethesda game since Doom Eternal. Feel like I'm doing pretty well, honestly.

  • Microsoft is not buying Valve and Counter-Strike for £12 billion
  • I'm a PC gamer and have been since I was a kid. It's literally my number one thing I do when I have free time is get on some games and hang with the boys. It's a big part of my life.

As game companies go, I don't trust Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Blizzard, Bethesda, Sony, Epic Games... It's a long list. Valve is the only company I even kinda trust (Which isn't even that much these days). If Microsoft bought Valve I'd probably never buy a PC game again. Because all the companies selling them would be companies I don't wanna give money.

But it's not true that they were buying it so it's a moot point. Just wanted to rant. :)

Microsoft is one of the greatest promoters of the Linux desktop
  • Honestly, I love windows 10 and windows 7 even more. I have had very little complaints with them and I miss 7 every day. But when support runs out for Windows 10 I'm switching. It seems every single day they come up with another stupid plan or "feature." Whether it's AI that's barely helpful or forcing me to use their software and services, I'm exhausted with the obnoxiously aggressive tactics to get me to use them.

  • Google’s AI Overviews are out of control
  • It's almost like LLM's aren't the solution to literally everything like companies keep trying to tell us they are. Weird.

I honestly can't wait for this to blow up in a company's face in a very catastrophic way.
