[Question] OVH vs hetzner for a cheap dedicated server
  • Are you talking about dedi or vps? Lowest dedi on OVH seems to be an E3-1245 with 2TB HDD 32GB RAM for 47 EUR. Choosing SSD (240GB) adds another 12 EUR. Lowest on Hetzner - at the moment - is an E3-1275 with 64GB and 512GB NVMe for 37 EUR. Plus the Hetzner has GBit, while OVH is on 250MBit.

Have to check OVH VPS though.

Freier Wille, eigene Meinung, etc.. alles gut. Soll jeder machen wie er will. Ich kann nur nicht nachvollziehen wieso Menschen glauben, da jetzt echte Brüller rausgehauen zu haben. Finde das eher kindisch.

  • I am using cifs. There may be some ups and downs, depending on decryption, filesize and stuff, but in general I can pretty much use the full Gbit connection. The lowest transfer I can remember was 58 or 59 MB/s when I transfered a lot of small files.

  • 👋 Have you stopped using Google much because of ChatGPT/Bing ?👀
  • But it's really good in faking knowledge. Very often it sounds legit, even though it's just some made up bs. You read it, it's wrong, but it still sounds like it's legit. Read about a judge or lawyer using it to provide old cases as precedent and CGPT made up some old case and case numbers. Still it was used in court till it turned out such cases never existed.

  • Tell us about unpopular games you love, or even just appreciate some aspects of, contrary to the inteenet hivemind?
  • TimeShift never felt as bad to me as a lot of people said it is. Was pretty good actually and I had fun playing it.

Also Bionic Commando didn't score that high on metacritics but I liked it very much and played it like 3 or 4 times (completed it).

Back in the days of C64 I had those two games called "Ace of Aces" and "Wings of Fury" which most of my friends hated. I didn't understand the topic or why I had to shoot others, but I played those games over and over again.

  • What do you need it for? Using just HDD this server will be kinda slow. If this is just about storage, I'd recommend getting a good VPS from Hetzner, Netcup or php-friends and extend storage using a Hetzner Storage Box. 1TB for just 3,xx EUR or 5TB for around 12 EUR.

As a benefit you'll not have to deal with failing drives and you do easy backups using snapshots.

  • help me choose my next distro
  • Wouldn't use SteamOS on a PC. It only supports a certain set of hardware, is not really meant to be used on a desktop pc and they don't seem to provide updates that frequently/often. Also installation is not that easy for non-technical users. But feel free to give it a try.
