What are your defining memories of computing in the old days?
    1. Programming big multi-media rigs with eight-hole paper tape and a thumb punch. #FourYorkshiremen
  • Hey [@protonprivacy](https://lemmy.world/c/protonprivacy), [@protonmail](https://mastodon.social/@protonmail)
  • A Thunderbird bridge would be useful but the missing Calendar feature for me is search. Other than that it's close to perfect.

  • TIL: F3 and F4 keys in Dolphin
  • Ask ten people what good defaults would be and you'll get ten very different responses. This is exactly why Dolphin, and Plasma in general, are so easy to tweak to your ideal.

Dolphin the file manager I always wanted.

  • The problem with No. 10 is that there's no one in there old enough to remember walking to school through winter smog. Pollution kills and legislation saves lives: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_Air_Act_1956

  • 'Version of PIN' for Boris Johnson's old phone may have been found by govt
  • Just read what I said again. Mrs Spudger does this for a living. She knows what she's talking about. The phone doesn't have to be connected to the public internet. It can just be connected to a private wi-fi network for this purpose.

Phones like this are very tightly locked down. This is not the iPhone you may be used to. The management software even has its own private Apps Store. The user can't just add or remove random apps from the public App Store. The device manager can also prevent any deletion of content.

These things aren't left to chance, especially when we're talking about the highest office in the land.

  • 'Version of PIN' for Boris Johnson's old phone may have been found by govt
  • Mrs Spudger manages a fleet of mobile devices, mostly Apple. She uses an Apple service called Business Manager to administer the devices. Here's a quote from the manual:

    "Reset user passwords

If users forget their password, you can reset it. Resetting their password allows them to get a new temporary password, at which time they will have to create a new password for their Managed Apple ID."

In other words, Johnson is talking utter bollocks. He doesn't need to know the password. His best defence is to drop it off a North Sea ferry, in a Rebekah Vardy stylee.

  • Boris Johnson fails to hand over mobile with Covid WhatsApps before inquiry deadline
  • Didn't the Tories bring in some legislation that would enable the government to store all our private communications? I know this buffoon will argue that the law is only supposed to apply to the little people. It doesn't count for old Etonians.

  • TV & Tunes Tuesday
  • Some gems there among the Des O'Connor stuff. Cheers.

  • TV & Tunes Tuesday
  • Last weekend I was rummaging around in the clearance bin at the local entertainment shop. I picked up One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and A Clockwork Orange for $5.00 each and Quatermass and the Pit for $2.95. That's this weekend sorted for telly time. Mrs Spudger hasn't seen any of these.

Oh, and new speakers too, at long last.

  • Who else watched BBC News at 10 just to see who'd be presenting it?
  • I was going to suggest Ralf Horris but his play date with karma didn't go as well as he'd hoped.

  • ‘I hate tree huggers’: How Starmer apparently exploded over Labour’s green policy
  • You can never be too unfair to lawyers. I note that Shakespeare agrees with me on this one:

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."

  • Shit name
  • I have to agree. wefwef is original and easy to search for. Voyager is going to get lost in a sea of voyagers (pun intended). Matrix/Element had the same problem every time they changed names and chose generic words.

I'd have gone for Wiff Waff, the original name of Ping Pong:

  • It's an old line by the late Peter Cook uttered during one of Private Eye's many libel trials.

  • What were your first cars/jazz mags?
  • Oh, it's worse than that. He "upgraded" to a Lada Niva.

  • What were your first cars/jazz mags?
  • A mate of mine had a Panda 4x4. It was ok as long as you knew its limits off-road.

  • My Distro ranking
  • It'll all end in tiers.

    Sleaford Mods - B.H.S. [post-punk] (2017)

Sleaford Mods are an English post-punk music duo, formed in 2007 in Nottingham. The band features vocalist Jason Williamson and, since 2012, musician Andrew Fearn. They are known for their abrasive, minimalist musical style and embittered explorations of austerity-era Britain, culture, and working class life, delivered in Williamson's East Midlands accent.

What happens to campaign Web sites after an election?

I was watching an old episode of Have I Got News For You and a David Cameron promotional site was mentioned so I checked it out. His people must have let the domain name expire as it's now a spam blog called David Cameron Journalism.

David Cameron improving your life, one shitty link farm at a time.

BBC Master 128: The evolved 8-bit computer from Acorn

In the basement today we have quite a rare machine (for North America:) The BBC Master 128. It's an evolution of the original Acorn BBC Micro from 1981. My first task is to service the PSU and convert it to 120v, then see if this machine is working.

[BBC] 1963: Mockumentary Predicts The Future Of 1988

Russian moon landings, week long traffic jams, a workforce replaced by automation and above all, too much leisure time!

These are just some of the bold predictions made in Don Haworth's 1963 BBC 'mockumentary' Time on Our Hands - a remarkable film which projects the viewer a quarter of a century into the future.

    The Warning - "MORE"

My granddaughter recently started guitar lessons so I bought her tickets for The Warning's recent gig at the O2 Academy in London. It was her first ever concert experience. Hopefully they'll be an inspiration for her.

Proper vid here for those who like pictures of people :)

    Father and Son

I've just watched Yusuf/Cat Stevens at Glastonbury and impressed by how many people of all ages know the lyrics to songs he wrote half a century ago. Example: when he started singing Father and Son the crowd had joined in before he'd reached the end of the first word.

And the sight of tens of thousands of mostly white, middle-class fans joining in with a 74 year old Muslim grandad wasn't something I'd ever expected to see.

www.drive.com.au Volkswagen admits it got it wrong with fiddly touchscreens, apologises to customers

After widespread public backlash, Volkswagen is shifting away from touchscreens – and back to buttons and dials – for basic controls such as infotainment and air-conditioning.

I think I just reconnected with VW. Touch screens in cars are probably the worst automotive innovation.

Obvs not the correct sub for this but can't find anywhere more suitable.
