In a surprise move during tonight’s meeting, the city’s elected officials voted to purchase several downtown properties to the immediate east of the Sudbury Community Arena
Most roadwork in Sudbury to be completed by end of year.
It's a long article, but the TLDR:
- Bridge of Nations & Frood/Maley roundabout work will continue through 2024.
- Kingsway/Falconbridge will be starting up before winter once Kingsway/Barrydowne is complete.
- All other current projects are expected to wrap up by winter
It's official! The Sudbury Cyclones are relaunching with a men's team in League2 Ontario to compete for promotion to the L1O Championship.
The latest benchmark price of a Sudbury-area residence (all types) is $459,800, which is a slight drop from the all-time high of $479,500 recorded in March 2022
The team will play in League1 Ontario, Sudbury Wolves Sports and Entertainment announces.
League1 Ontario's third tier has announced its inaugural team, bringing semi-pro football back to Sudbury.

City arenas need $2.8 million in urgent & pre-emptive work
Five of Greater Sudbury’s arenas require a total of $2.8 million in urgent and pre-emptive maintenance work, which city staff say is needed to prevent service level interruptions
Money will be used to modernize curriculum, promote skilled trades apprenticeships and support hands-on learning for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education experiences
[email protected] is actually the 2nd or 3rd oldest city-based community on lemmy.ca . It's not very active, but should definitely be added to this list.
Also, [email protected] would be a good community to add to the soccer category.
For team-specific Canadian-based soccer teams, there's [email protected] of the MLS (US-league with 3 Canadian-based teams). Other MLS sides include Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal, which I don't think have a community created.
None of the 8 Canadian Premier League teams, nor any of the numerous League1 Canada sides have taken steps to establish their communities yet (as far as I know).
Greater Sudbury Fire Services’ rescue boat at Tony’s Marina on Lake Wanapitei was removed in early 2020, and the area is now served by a boat parked at the Minnow Lake station
Unlike large municipalities, which had their housing targets assigned by the province, smaller municipalities get to set their own

Peertube is the Fediverse equivalent. It needs more content, and more instances to host said content, but it's a good start.
For years, public safety organizations have used Twitter as an effective way to share information with the public in real time, Levy said.
And for years, rampant misinformation has spread virally in real time thanks to these same actions. The number of times I've been stuck in some sort of lock-down because of a supposed shooter in the area, that was actually half-way across town, is just more evidence that social media never should have been used for spreading any sort of official warning about situations.
This kind of info should be posted to the official site of the organization, and if it's actually something that people in the area **need ** to know about, sent directly to people's phones (in a manner similar to the Amber Alert system).
Two L1O playoff contenders will take to the field at York Lions Stadium before York United host three-time Canadian Premier League champions Forge FC.

Ah. I suspected ESP had wifi buit-in, but I've never used ESP myself.
If the power draw is about the same as a security camera, it could perhaps be plugged into one of the small solar units meant for an external camera.
Now that I know it's wifi, I may just need to get one and see if it'll work with my solar cells. Should be a fun experiment!
Thanks for answering my questions!
The kids doesn't mention any wifi/zigbee/z-wave capabilities, which would mean it would need to be connected to your HA unit with a cord of some sort (it references a USB cable on the page). That's a hardwire connection (as opposed to a wireless connection).
From what I'm seeing, these all need to be hardwired in, but maybe I'm just not digging far enough.
Is that correct?
Ouch!
WAQI is currently pulling 196 ug/m3 for Sudbury into my Home Assistant.
Out of curiosity, which AQ sensors did you pick up? A link would be great so I can see if they'd be compatible with HA.
That's interesting. Did a Jazz bar open up somewhere in Sudbury in the past couple years, or are you just a huge fan? Would be great to have a new haunt playing something different than every other bar in the region...
Adaptation is what you do when you've already failed to avoid causing the issue.
According to Carbon Brief, as of 2017 the region was already experiencing 1.8 C warming (https://www.carbonbrief.org/mapped-how-every-part-of-the-world-has-warmed-and-could-continue-to-warm/). From the climate atlas page linked in the article, it would appear things have worsened since (projected around 2.2 C).
We're lucky that a bit of warming helps some aspects in this region (ie. longer growing season), but there's a lot that we'll need to do to adapt to changes in the water cycle that comes from less snowmelt, increased freezing rain, changes in heatwave times/durations, etc.
From what I've read in the report, it's very light on the details of how the city will adapt to these changes. There are a lot of forming "working groups" to come up with ideas, but not a lot of real action.
Still, a step in the right direction is a step. So I'll take it, but we do need to get a bit of a move on here.
Good stuff. I love how it's grown and look forward to seeing more voices discuss the issues that arise.
I'm working on growing [email protected] myself, and have tried to limit to 1 or 2 posts per day, just to keep them coming and leave openings for other locals to step in, but without the same kind of response.
Perhaps I'm the one that needs to take on a more aggressive seeding technique...
I don't have an issue (I was replying to the previous post), especially as I do see value in seeding a community with posts. An empty community is a dead community.
However, it may be of more benefit to spread them out. After all, this is all federated. So anyone following the community from elsewhere (my prior reply was from a Mastodon account), they will receive a big wall of posts from this community all at once, but if they were to log in later in the day, they would see nothing (as it all posted earlier).
It would also allow other people to post something themselves and start a conversation in the post, as opposed to just an unexamined link.
Some might also see it as an attempt at spamming or karma farming (even though that no longer translates). Perhaps those thoughts may be something to consider.
They're just over 2.7k right now, probably be over 3k by end of day.
I wouldn't expect our 1.1k to balloon nearly as quickly, but it will be nice to snag more Canadians from the reddit-exodus.
I included wrestling because it always seems like they're hitting each other in their sportsballs whenever I bother to tune in. ;)
This kind of gatekeeping is why Arsenal is more popular that Spurs across North America...
In addition to those already listed, there's also the following:
For soccer/football:
Hockey:
Baseball:
Wrestling:
Atletico Ottawa (Canadian Premier League), followed by Tottenham Hotspur.
Rumours are pretty strong that I'm about to get a local club in League2 Ontario, so they'll end up taking over the #1 spot in my support & knocking the other teams down a spot.

I realize Canadian soccer is going to be exceptionally niche here, so I'll give a quick layout for the majority of people who are completely unfamiliar.
For men's soccer:
The top of the USA "Pyramid" is Major League Soccer, which has 3 franchises in Canada.
The Canadian "Pyramid" has the Canadian Premier League as our 1st division, and no 2nd division (plans are for CanPL to split at 16-teams). Our 3rd division is a series of separate leagues under the League1 Canada label (Ligue1 Quebec, League1 Atlantic, League1 Alberta, League1 BC, League1 Ontario). Starting in 2024, League1 Ontario is splitting into 3 leagues (L1O Premier, L1O Championship, and L2O) with promotion & relegation. Below that are various youth/amateur leagues.
For women's soccer:
League1 Canada has women's teams as well. They also occupy the 3rd division position.
A pro-division (Project 8) is currently being developed for a 2025 launch.
How our national women's team has remained so competitive, is something of a mystery.
I like it. Straight and to the point, with the options you need quickly.
I'm curious; what's the purpose of the waterboarding & purse buttons?
