Chris Packham’s ‘instinctive’ bird sniffing is not a crime, police say
  • After everything that’s happened the last few years I didn’t think I could be surprised by any headlines any more… but “bird sniffing is not a crime” are a set of words I never expected to see out together in a sentence.

  • Halloween is coming up. What's the plan?
  • Our little boy has a milk allergy (tbh I suspect he may have grown out of it but haven’t put that to the test yet) - so we’ve gone to our neighbours and given them some vegan chocolate. That way we can take the little one next door for a little bit of trick or treating.

We haven’t decorated but he absolutely loves going past the houses that have gone to the effort “giant spider! Spooky Skeleton!” “Ghosty!!!” hard to be grumpy at a holiday when the little ones are enjoying it so much.

  • The Clock Change: A Thread
  • Awake at 5am but held firm at keeping the lights off and just trying to cwtch until close to 6 when we got up properly.

So far spent the day outside in the sun playing with high energy activities and have managed to time nap time perfectly so fingers crossed that will all help with bed time later tonight.

That all being said… please can we all just scrap the bloody clock changes and stick with BST all year?

  • Hey Dads. How are we doing?
  • Dad life wise - really good. My little boy (nearly 3) is a proper joy and we’re finally at the point where he reliably sleeps through the night. We’ve got baby number 2 on the way so trying to enjoy the sleep while I can.

My work has been a mixed bag - it’s sometimes hard to shake that off and leave work at work but I do my best at pushing it out of my head.

Asylum seeker children to get postcards after murals painted over

Thousands of asylum seeker children will be sent postcards with bright and cheerful cartoons on them after ministers recently ordered murals at two reception centres to be painted over last month.

We need to start talking about how important the ECHR is
  • It’s just so comically evil that a political party would be against Human Rights… at least it would be comical if there wasn’t a real chance that the tories could actually scrap it and that there are voters who have been tricked into agreeing with them.

The chance is very low, the Good Friday Agreement depends on the ECHR but after Brexit we know what level of destruction the Tories are willing to do to this country in order to cling on to power

  • Woman in Teesside accused of carrying out own abortion to appear before judge | UK news
  • with intent to destroy the life of a child capable of being born alive

These are extremely late self administered abortions. Absolutely tragic for all involved and the current laws may not be appropriate but although most people agree that a collection of cells or tiny foetus is not a person yet… when someone is at a point in the pregnancy where the baby can be born and survive then I don’t think it’s as simple.

Note: I’m assuming that’s what the line meant about being capable of being born alive (as the other recent case I was aware of was a really really late abortion and I think this is a similar case based on the posted link)

  • August Pickups - New or second hand, what have you bought recently?
  • I can never resist popping into a charity shop in the hunt for Blu-rays if I happen to be near one.

I don’t really have many yet but after being burnt one too many times by crappy streaming services or digital purchases that you don’t really own I’m just keeping an eye for deals on physical media instead.

I do inevitably digitise them for easy playback but I’ve always got the proper disc if I want to watch it (and to know that I actually own it)

Plus Music Magpie with their 4 for £5 Blu-ray deals

  • Is charging electric car at holiday house "theft"?
  • It’s not theft unless the owner specified in the conditions of the rental that car’s couldn’t be charged at the property. (Even then “Theft” is a strong word!)

That being said - there is obviously a big difference in charging your phone and charging a car and really we are at a point where this should be clear in all holiday rental agreements one way or another.

I don’t think the owner would be happy if someone just turned on all the taps in the house and left them running for the entirety of their stay. There is a sort of “fair use” which is assumed (if not actually in writing)

Question comes if car charging should always be assumed “fair use” or is that above and beyond? Or is it a gray area that just “depends”.. Much better for everyone if all this is made as clear as possible in the agreement right at the beginning.

  • Saturday Morning Chit Chat - 5th August
  • It’s a science activity centre - lots of hands on exhibits, it’s great for a wide age range of kids (and let’s be honest… adults too!)

My boy is under 3 and loves it and has been talking about “the robot arm” all weekend.

They’ve got a little 1.5 min video that shows some of the exhibits https://www.techniquest.org/discover/whats-inside/

Also - I did indeed flop onto the sofa and spent that precious nap time playing Zelda (it was glorious)

  • Saturday Morning Chit Chat - 5th August
  • Pretty busy weekend so far.

Techniquest, Swimming Lessons, trip to the beach.

Nothing planned for this afternoon though…. Maybe some gardening (the little boy likes to help with the sweeping)

Just putting him down for a nap so I’ve got about 50 min of free time which I should spend productivity but will probably flop down on the sofa!
