What are the bad patterns of Reddit to never repeat on Lemmy?
  • There's nothing more disappointing than clicking into a thread because it looks like it might be interesting or fun, and realising 90% of the comments are the same old, tired jokes, repeated ad infinitum.

  • On The State of /r/PICS: Profanity, Offensive Content, and An Open Letter : r/pics
  • The mods of r/pics are absolute queens and kings. Bravo.

  • Server issue?
  • Thanks for the info all. Can't see your responses in the thread, but they showed up in my inbox. Growing pains :/

  • Server issue?
  • Is that a recent Lemmy update? I wonder if Inshould mention it to the Beehaw admins.

  • Server issue?

I had this notice pop up when I opened Jerboa this morning. Anyone know whether it will cause issues? I'm on Beehaw, if that matters.

  • Henning Mankell's Wallander books are great, if you're into the slightly depressing Nordic vibe.

  • "The winning Lotto Max numbers were picked and purchased in Scarborough, Ont"

Check your wallets and backpacks, Scarborough lemmings! And if you find the ticket, uh, can I borrow some money?

  • What's your Sci-Fi unpopular opinion?
  • Haha, I once mentioned on reddit that I thought I would've liked it if I'd read it as a teenager and got downvoted to hell. The setting was interesting, and I appreciated the ideas, I just thought the actual writing was very clunky. No judgement on anyone who liked it is intended, I've certainly enjoyed some poorly written books just because the ideas explored were new to me.

Thanks for the recs, I may give another book a try once the memory has faded more.

  • What's your Sci-Fi unpopular opinion?
  • This should make some people mad... I thought The Dispossessed was an awful book. The characters were flat and the way Le Guin explored the themes had all the nuance and subtlety of a Garfield comic. It's the only book of hers that I've read, put me off exploring the rest of her work.

  • Wow, I didn't think they were ever going to solve this one.

  • 📢Entire mod team on r/mildlyinteresting (and more subs) removed and locked out of their accounts after changing their rules upon community's request. (They're also switching subs BACK to SFW)
  • Hilariously, a subreddit that I mod, with less than 700 subscribers and like, 4 slightly active users (3 of whom are mods), just got the threatening modmail. We only went private as a gesture of solidarity, there's maybe one post a week so it's not exactly a bustling community. I'd made the sub public for about an hour every couple of days in an effort to avoid this sort of thing, guess it didn't work.

  • Has anyone's dog actually eaten their homework?
  • Yep, my dog tore up an english essay when I was in junior high. I still had my rough draft so just rewrote it, luckily I had time. Told my teacher about it, she thought it was pretty funny.

  • My Hoya bella finally bloomed

    Any hoya heads here?

This one had a learning curve, I'd heard they were thirsty but couldn't believe it needed that much water. After many lost peduncles, I've got one set of flowers opening and another close behind.

I have never seen an owl poop in a house. Until today.
  • Well, you can't post this and not tell us the story. That's definitely illegal.

  • Flowers from my walk yesterday

Top: Longbract frog orchid and Mountain death camas Bottom: Lesser yellow lady's slipper, Wood lily, and Pink wintergreen.

All found not too far from Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

  • I believe illustrated child porn is illegal here in Canada, as well as other countries (not going to google it though). Seems like it isn't in the US? I find it kind of shocking that so many people don't see an issue with it, tbh.

  • If you have hoya, seriously consider dousing them with sulfur for flat mite control.
  • I did all of my hoyas early last fall after realising the corking on my balaensis was mites, and had the same results. I've read that the treatment should be repeated every 5-7 days for at least 5 weeks, so I did that for 6 or 7 weeks. Seems like people have good results just doing it occasionally, though.

  • What's Lemmy reading?
  • I read this junk!
