I traded in my Pixel Fold.
  • I mentioned much of the same a while ago regarding the Pixel Fold here. I'm not even mad about the updates or the Tensor 2 chip as I knew about both before purchasing.

Anyhow, I did the same and traded for an S24 Ultra. It's a nice phone, but it's since taken the place of my Pixel Fold in my backup phone drawer. I understood that the AI features were for Samsung's apps, but they just aren't as good as Pixels imo. Pixels are just smarter smartphones. Not to say that I don't miss some of the many more features from the S24 Ultra now that I've gone back to my Pixel 8 Pro though.

If I could go back, I would rather have the Pixel Fold as a backup again in the drawer instead of the Ultra and keep using the 8 Pro as my daily driver.

  • If forced to choose one retro console forever what would you choose and why?
  • I was teetering toward the Super Nintendo also with Earthbound, MK2/MK3 Ultimate, and Super Mario World. The roaming around in Super Mario 64 and flying non-stop with the birdman suit in Pilotwings 64 won me over with the N64 in the end though.

    Could do this all day...

  • Apple gets the message, RCS coming to iPhone in 2024 with same Universal Profile as Android
  • Exactly. It's in no way a bad thing for anyone. We'll see the way that it's implemented. It's the first step. r/Android is rearing its head here. Let's enjoy this for the moment

  • Apple gets the message, RCS coming to iPhone in 2024 with same Universal Profile as Android
  • Glad that you emphasized Europe. Here in the states where iMessage is dominant, it'll make a difference.

At the end of the day it's not a bad thing. I'm also waiting for details with compatibility to be ironed out, but it's a start.

Just surprised at the whole negative energy with this announcement considering this was a "when pigs fly" or "when hell freezes over" sorta thing. Again, it's a start and hopefully Google opens it up (even if forcibly by the EU) down the road.

  • Same. I don't even mind Tensor 2 in it. It runs fine enough and I never had any overheating. It's a beautiful piece of hardware.

My main gripe is with how heavy it is. It's tiring having to hold it for extended periods when I mostly use the outer screen (which is the perfect screen size, but that's a whole other thing). And yeah... watching media on the inner screen with a crease and with the size of the media the same as a normal smartphone... it's just something I looked over before purchasing.

I regret buying it also. But... I would have also regretted buying the Galaxy Fold, OnePlus Open, or any other foldable. Right now, my Pixel Fold just sits in a drawer as an overly expensive backup device while I use a Pixel 8 Pro as my daily. Will likely use the Fold as a trade-in for the Galaxy Ultra in January/February.

  • Exclusive: Google confirms with Notebookcheck it blocked benchmarks during Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro review embargo period
  • Chalk me up as one of the folks that was adamant this was due to an API mismatch.

Yikes. Low benchmarks in the case of everyday Pixel usage isn't a big deal, but prohibiting the installation without reason will make this a bigger deal than it needs to be. And I can't fault users for feeling that way.

  • Preseason provides a glimpse of Houston's potential

    >Ime Udoka could not gush, though at halftime, on Friday, he might have been tempted. After the Rockets completed the preseason with a 110-104 win against the Miami Heat on Friday, they were too inconsistent, as they had been through the preseason for unqualified raves, and it’s probably not his style, anyway.

Google blocked Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro reviewers from using popular benchmarks to test the Tensor G3 chip, new owners too - NotebookCheck

Pixel 8 to have seven years of Android updates
  • I'm guessing here, but are any of those products on that website both purchasable AND given a guaranteed product support time? Or to make it more specific, has Google ever killed off a phone (Nexus and Pixel years, so 15 years total) prior to its end of support date?

I don't believe they have. Stadia, a non-phone product, is the closest thing. Of course it's not a phone and Google also didn't give a eol date before its release. When it was killed they refunded any purchased games. So I guess the better question is would you be fine with getting a refund in the amount of your purchase of a Pixel 8/Pro if they didn't hold up their end of the bargain?

I know some of the comments in the community are tongue-in-cheek, but if Google were to keep the prior support date or do what they did today by increasing them, folks still wouldn't be happy.

[Exclusive] Google Pixel Watch 2 features, promo video revealed ahead of October 4th launch
  • Didn't notice that initially, so thanks for pointing it out.

I really hope that it's not the same. The only thing I can think of is that the Google store mentions 24 hr battery life with footnote that mentions certain features being turned on may lower battery life. The leak today says 24 hr battery life with AOD turned on, which gives me hope. I may get disappointed come 10/4.

If it's free watch with the purchase of an 8 Pro as rumors indicate, I won't be disappointed for long.

  • Google announces October 4 event for Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2
  • Nice. Looking forward to the event. Hopefully the time between phone announcement and release is short like last year. It was only six days for me.

The watch should be interesting also. Size is supposedly the same, so maybe the processor will yield more than one day of battery life? That's my hope anyway.

  • Source: Google Pixel 8 will get more OS updates with longer lifespan than Samsung
  • Oh, I know it's anecdotal. I also know others have issues with the Pixel 6 and 7 getting really hot.

Yep... fully aware of some saying their devices are getting hot. My Pixel 6 Pro got hot exactly once while navigating here in LA. Not sure what caused it, but it was hot to the point that I had to hold it to one of the ac vents. My 7 Pro got only slightly warm occasionally and I'm having similar experiences with the Fold. Not to say that it's a normal thing, but it's hot to the extent that others have experienced.

It's like the fingerprint sensor complaint. I could repeatedly get my prints to register without fail when some others were having issues. I'm almost worried that Google is switching to an ultrasonic sensor instead of optical because I haven't had the same luck with the ultrasonic sensor that Samsung used in the S21 Ultra and S23 Ultra. I dunno. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Anyhow, hope that your next phone, Pixel or otherwise, treats you better.

  • Source: Google Pixel 8 will get more OS updates with longer lifespan than Samsung
  • Same. Camera was also great, but slow as you mentioned due to the processor. Couldn't take more than a couple of pictures without stalling to process said pictures. Still was my fav along with the Nexus 5. Pixel 3 XL, Nexus 6, and Pixel 6 Pro being my least fav.

  • Source: Google Pixel 8 will get more OS updates with longer lifespan than Samsung
  • I dunno what to say besides being anecdotal also by saying my experience differs... especially with the P5.

I'm not surprised with Oneplus' battery being better as they're notorious for background app killing. It's the reason why I've only had a couple of Oneplus' phones throughout the years.

  • Source: Google Pixel 8 will get more OS updates with longer lifespan than Samsung
  • Probably not the right phone for you. Battery life in my experience has been average for me. Not great, but not awful either.

Reviews and personal experiences have been all over the place regarding the battery from what I've seen in reviews, social media, and forums. It just depends. The Pixel 7 Pro's battery has been about the same as the 14 Pro Max that I had, but worse than the 13 Pro Max. Better than the Pixel Fold that I'm using, but not as good as the Pixel 4 XL. For sure better than the Samsung Galaxy Nexus from back in the day, but not as good as my HTC 10. Definitely not as good as the Pixel 5, but better than the Pixel 6 Pro. And so forth and so on...

Depends on my personal usage, but I'm on my phone constantly. For me, battery has been middle of the road.

  • Source: Google Pixel 8 will get more OS updates with longer lifespan than Samsung
  • ...And every Google product I've owned has been awful...

I don't get it. "Every Google product I've owned" makes it sound like you've owned a lot of Google products. But every single one you've "owned has been awful".

Why do you continue buying Google products if they've been awful... for you? Maybe Google isn't the right OEM for you? I mean, no one is forcing you to buy their products if they're "awful", right?

  • Pixel 8 Promo Video Leaks Audio Magic Eraser, Blue Device Color
  • You don't have much longer as I'm sure they'll stick with the early October announcement. Tensor 3 should be nice.
