What are some good hobbies/interests for someone in their mid thirties to pick up?
  • If you have time and enjoy being active / outside - running.

If you prefer learning and/or experiencing something other than your daily life - reading.

Both can be tailored to your own availability/interest (fast or long running, solo or group, non-fiction or fiction, specific interests or genre.

  • How do you integrate speed work into your regular running?

    Hey all,

Since starting to integrate more trail running into my regular runs and typically aiming for at least 1 solid long run on a mountain (1000m / 3000ft elevation gain) weekly, I've found that if I still want to maintain high mileage weekly that I struggle to have days where I integrate speed work. I often feel like my legs/muscles are sore enough that my gut instinct is the risk of injury from the speed session is higher than the gain from doing it.

In addition I just find the trail and mountain runs much more enjoyable so don't feel compelled to downgrade my longer trail runs to add in speed sessions.

Curious how speed sessions factor in for others and how easy/manageable it is for you to add it in during especially higher trading periods either by volume or elevation.

www.runnersworld.com Into Ultra: Damian Hall launches new initiative to get more people into ultrarunning

The new scheme aims to improve access to ultrarunning by covering the costs for those less able to afford it

Interesting article and initiative about trying to support people with less resources who want to participate in ultra running.

Would you consider ultra running a cheap or expensive sport/hobby to engage in?

    Premier League 2023/24 fixtures released
  • Friday 11 August 2023 20:00 Burnley v Man City (Sky Sports)

Saturday 12 August 2023 12:30 Arsenal v Nott'm Forest (TNT Sports) AFC Bournemouth v West Ham Brighton v Luton Town Everton v Fulham Sheff Utd v Crystal Palace 17:30 Newcastle v Aston Villa (Sky Sports)

Sunday 13 August 2023 14:00 Brentford v Spurs (Sky Sports) 16:30 Chelsea v Liverpool (Sky Sports)

Monday 14 August 2023 20:00 Man Utd v Wolves (Sky Sports)

Interesting first round of fixtures. Burnley - Man City will be interesting, and feel it's been a while since we had a game like Chelsea - Liverpool on the opening day.

Sheffield United - Crystal Palace feels like a game from sometime back in the late 19th century.

  • What race do you wish existed?
  • The one that comes to mind for me (probably quite typical) is the rim to rim to rim.

I also love it as a self supported run, but if you could actually share that experience with a like-minded group of runners while not overloading the park that would be incredible.

  • What race do you wish existed?

If you had the capability to create a race with no restrictions/limitations on what was possible, what would it be? What is your dream race that doesn't exist as an actual event, but you wish it did?

  • Agreed. I think it's such a difficult issue to tackle. If you implement salary caps, would the increased income just go to the owners? Is that any better, how feasible is it to equalise wages to a degree that many countries are attractive from a financial standpoint and is that even desired?

It's interesting to think back to the Bosman ruling and it's implications. I would never be able to argue that it would be better for the players to go back to pre Bosman days, but it is incredible the ramifications for "smaller" clubs who face a constantly ticking time bomb of needing to lock players down on contracts early to avoid risking those who develop fantastically only have a year or two left, but that leaves you paying a lot of money for youngsters who don't pan out.

  • Current training?
  • Wow that's a shift. I briefly took an overgrown "trail" the other day and the amount of foxtails stuck into my socks has me strongly reconsidering taking that route again. Hopefully there's some desirepaths or similar you can use!

  • How many plan to stay on lemmy post blackout?
  • I plan to. At this point even though I do think Reddit could walk back the changes in a way that is mutually accepted, I have zero faith they would be willing to actually make the changes needed to incur enough good will. I rarely if ever commented and won't delete my account (for access to old content viewed and subreddits subscribed to help seek them out here) but definitely not planning on going back.

Still looking both here and at tildes though.

  • I was listening to a podcast today about the Danish Superliga discussing how they anticipate all of the top 8 teams to lose their best player in the summer transfer window. Got me thinking about the challenges and imbalances in the football league structure across countries today. While it's great for the players it does make me a little sad to think of how these clubs and their fans have to almost view as an inevitability that most of the best players in the league will leave every year.

  • Current training?

With ultramarathon and ultrarunning both being private on Reddit currently, how much extra running are you hoping to get in during the downtime?

  • Love it. Definitely didn't manage to get in and comment too much in the Reddit community, felt like shouting into a massive crowd. Nice to know there's alternatives to still get my fix of football news!
