What's in your emergency 'go-bag' and why?
  • Upon researching, I found these helpful government resources for places prone to wildfires or earthquakes: https://www.ready.gov/kit https://readyforwildfire.org/prepare-for-wildfire/emergency-supply-kit/ https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/survival-kit-supplies.html

The items that came up across the three:

    • Water and non-perishable food (for humans and for pets)
    • Flashlight and radio (hand cranked or battery powered with extra batteries)
    • First aid kit, hygiene, and sanitation supplies
    • Prescription meds
    • Local maps
    • A change of clothes and some blankets
    • Some cash
    • Copies of important documents (birth certificate, licenses, passports)
    • Cell phone chargers
  • What's in your emergency 'go-bag' and why?

A radio? A knife? A lighter? A flashlight? How do the contents of your go-bag help you when your local disasters happen?

    Style Guide recommendations

Do you use a style guide when editing your works? Which one?

The only general english style guide I'm familiar with is Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. Unfortunately, I hear that the authors made some, frankly, glaring linguistic mistakes. To substitute it, I've been recommended On Writing Well by Zinsser.

What is your opinion of both of these and of other guides?

  • Thanks for your questions!

I'd like to make my writing more valuable for readers by, among other ways, writing more clearly.

As for the essay, I'm not quite sure yet what to write about. I have a few little ideas pinging around in my head, but I don't know if any of them are worth fleshing out.

  • The skill of planning, if well honed, is invaluable in writing works that stand the test of time, I think. I reckon I use my plans like maps who's traces of roads I use to plan stops in my text. I try to make sure that the reader's view at each of these stops is worth the travel.

  • Hi everyone! I'm going to have to submit my master's thesis by the end of the year. I'd like to improve my writing substantially before sending off my final draft.

This month, I'd like to write a short essay or a short story. Get the ball rolling and all.
