A melbournian with many interests: \* Christian (very liberal) \* Embedded Linux Engineer \* Magic The Gathering judge \* Mechanical keyboard enthusiast (mostly DIY, all very small, Colemak layout) \* Trying to get into woodworking

All too often I come off as argumentative, I'm working on it but definitely a work in progress. Also frequently more pedantic than I'm comfortable with.

Parking minimums are systematic oppression by car lobbyists against all others forms of transport. Yeah I said it.
  • @eskimofry @IMNOTCRAZYINSTITUTION Some of us do want cars removed from CBDs.

But good PT leads to less walking for everyone. And should be much better for anyone that needs to use a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

  • @Maggoty @UnderpantsWeevil Melbourne is slowly on it's journey to banning cars in the CBD. I wish we'd do it with a timeline with less decades in it, but each step towards it is good.

So far 2 of 21 pieces of street have been made car free.

  • @Olgratin_Magmatoe @kurwa I wouldn't go that far. Just because every step is wrong, doesn't make the thought process that weird.

I'm saying we should have compassion for their misunderstanding. The conclusion is wrong, but the path to get there isn't that hard. Particularly when you've been raised in that paradigm (or raised watching media that shows it as the ideal).

  • @Username @HiddenLayer555 no, the store will just have local customers. And yes there are plenty of those when you can replace the carpark with apartments.

  • The PRC's long-term high speed rail progress.
  • @Alsephina @Juice Isn't their bigger problem having too many unfinished apartments? Many more than are needed.

(And are those rates including those who own apartments that will never be completed?)

  • @HiddenLayer555 @dessalines There isn't much lacking in the Japanese network.

  • @davel comedy mode: one more track, you wont believe how many more people can use just one more track ;)

  • @davel Air travel is also demanding on:
    * Road infrastructure for the airport, trains deliver people closer to where they want in the first place and the connect better to the rest of the PT system.
    * Land use. Airports are huge.
    * Airports also cost a lot, factoring them into the price of moving people around is important, frequently this is paid for the state.
    * Noisy in ways that just can't be mitigated.

It really isn't a good option.

  • What's your least favorite thing about cycling?
  • @dexa_scantron @Never_Daunted park benches that face the shared path, encouraging people to sit and play fetch across the path....

  • The PRC's long-term high speed rail progress.
  • @davel @elgordino the viability is: how do we let people move around the country, what is the cheapest way.

    This is cheap.

    It's also cheap everywhere else.

And by cheap I mean cheaper than alternatives.

  • Bros who still buy Tesla's thinking they're morally superior need a reminder
  • @cm0002 @ByteOnBikes yes, but the idea that EV's solve things makes people think it is okay to not be all in on PT.

    And it's not okay.

  • It's always worth asking for a bike rack!
  • @psoul @Showroom7561 When more than 2 wide tyred bikes want to use it at a time the store will probably consider installing a different rack worth while, you can with care and skill still secure them to the ends of the rack while using up no additional path/rack space.

I do love the staple style ones though, making pedestrians feel safer from the cars can also improve how a space feels.

  • If you were never a "fuck cars" person, hang out near a school
  • @grue the stop was somewhere no sane person would cross a busy road. With nothing on that side of the road. Maybe that service that was nearly too late could have dropped off in the school, but after waiting to turn into the school it would have dropped everyone off too late for class.

Increasing the schedule frequency so the one before class was only 5 minutes before class would have been ideal.

@fuck\_cars Something I wish Australia would change is laws prohibiting any vehicles between a 200W ebike and a full motorcycle. I'd get a lot of value from a 60kmph limited 1kW ebike. But currently to sell such a thing it would have to comply with all motorcycle requirements, and things like ABS on both wheels is really not required for such a device.a \#AusPol #eBikes
