A Judicial "Trolley Problem"
  • This is an interesting question. From Foot’s own neo-Aristotelian ethical naturalist perspective, I don’t think she would accept executing an innocent person.

Her account of the practical rationality of the Sudetenland farm boy who chose death over joining the Nazis seems to indicate her preference for avoiding participation in others’ evil acts.

Just as well, it seems to conflict with virtues such as courage (giving into fear of a riot), wisdom (abandoning the rule of law to placate a mob), justice (murdering an innocent person), and so on.

  • [SPOILER] Aljamain Sterling vs. Sean O'Malley
  • That was an incredible moment for O’Malley. Watching the end of the main event was reminiscent of McGregor vs Aldo. Both in the pull back counter for the finish and the immense crowd pop for the crowning of a well-hyped new champion.

Respect to both guys for their character after the fight. I know O’Malley wants Chito next, but I’d like to see him fight Dvalishvili myself. The story line is there and he deserves it more. I also hope we see O’Malley vs Sandhagen down the road.

  • Game Thread: Chicago Cubs (60-56) @ Toronto Blue Jays (65-53) - 08/12 3:07PM
  • A hard loss today. I was in attendance for the game they lost to Oakland at home, so that’s the second time this year I’ve watched the Jays lose 5-4 at home after the away team scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth off a pitcher named Jordan. At least I got a bobblehead this time!

Honestly, I’m worried about this team making the playoffs, let alone winning a series.

  • Every once in a while I try to remind myself that this team is pretty good and I should appreciate that, even if I’m disappointed they’re not likely to win the division. Not to mention they still have a shot at winning the whole thing, or at least making a deep playoff run.

  • Blue Jays don't make any last minute moves at the trade deadline
  • Barger has bounced back recently from an injury the cost him the month of May.

His strikeouts are up in AAA this year over last year at 25% but around where they were when he was flying through A+ and AA last year. I suspect he’s going to be a strikeout guy due to his approach.

Fortunately, his walk rate is above his own norms at 13% this year and that kind of eye should help balance out some strikeouts. The best news is that his power is back; since June 30, he’s hit 4/5 of his home runs and 8/12 of his doubles this season.

They’re also moving him around a bit. He’s played SS, 2B, 3B, and RF for Buffalo this year. This front office loves moving guys around and pursues versatility, so I’m not sure if they’re trying to find his best long-term positional fit or to make him a utility guy like Biggio, Espinal, and Merrifield have been.

The resurgence of Orelvis Martinez could be part of the reason they’re moving Barger around. Of course, it’s hard to find playing time for all those middle infielders in Buffalo too, so it could just be that.

  • Blue Jays don't make any last minute moves at the trade deadline
  • I’m disappointed. I think they should have done more to improve the Jays’ offensive floor, and their were opportunities to do so.

I suspect they didn’t like other teams’ asks. The farm isn’t exactly strong, they traded away two solid starting pitching prospects for Hicks, and we know Atkins can be risk averse.

It could also be that they liked their minor league options more than the players they could afford to acquire via trade. I wouldn’t mind seeing Horwitz or Schneider called up.

Mike Trout will miss the next month, perhaps longer. The Angels were just swept by the Padres, the nadir of a nightmarish stretch in which they’ve lost 11 of 15. What does all of this mean for Shohei Ohtani's immediate future? Nothing. Few in the baseball industry see the Angels’
